Some quick Google searching says it was an "ichiban kuji" prize, so it's from a lottery drawing. There seem to be quite a few listings on second-hand sites like Yahoo! Auction and Mercari so it looks like they had quite a few of these to give away!

Ok, I have to give them some props. The aesthetic for it is perfect. The power light being a blinking orange light just like the show, and putting it under the plastic so it appears and disappears like the show are primo choices. With a bit more money in development, this could could be both an amazing prop and a good mp3 player. Personally, I would have made the knob the play/pause/skip control that you use turning/pressing/moving the knob in different ways, that way the face of the radar can be cleaner.

A google search told me there's a Proplica for the radar (a line for quite premium life sized props from different anime series) which is nice, but being Proplica there's definitely no MP3 player added inside, which makes me sad. It's an Ichiban Kuji prize For those unfamiliar, it's like a mini lottery run at convenience stores in Japan, you buy a ticket (or many) and win a random prize based on the letter you pull. There's usually 3-5 big prizes which are usually figurines, and then everyone else gets something like a towel or a cardboard picture. But yeah, not really released as something anyone would buy on its own.

Based on the shot at 6:37, it looks like the knob is made of the main knob housing and then a little plastic piece that inserts into the knob and screws down to secure it. My guess is they _did_ originally intend for it to be functional, probably attached to a potentiometer as some kind of volume control, but decided that it was too expensive for one reason or another (maybe the chip they were using didn't have enough input pins, and a multiplexer would have added too much cost/software complexity?). Rather than retooling and manufacturing a new set of functionless knobs (or, worse, an entirely new housing), they printed those little plastic pieces to screw into the spot that _would_ have been used to secure the pot board and hold the knob in place.

i took a trip down to dingusland and smelled all the head-phonies. they all smelled like different flavors of the $10 philips buds i was using to sample them, but each set made me discover something new about the song, it was wild. important mention, i listened to the song's entirety for each set. at the end it even seemed the song was too short, that's how much i was enjoying it. Meze had the best bass, Austrian Audio had the tastiest snare, and of course Grado had the most glimmery-shimmering-magical cymbals of all. it seems i've fallen in love with cymbals, and i blame you for it! (no, seriously, man, thank you!) oh, and The Terminators kinda made me space out for a bit, cause the philips buds made them sound the best, like buttery smooth. i know, it's the sound distorting through headphones, then ears-on-a-stand recording, then played through different headphones through a laptop, so my experience isn't ultimate at all. but comparing headphones like this was a blast (especially with eyes closed), and i can't stress enough, how cool dingusland is, and i will be exlporing it for all foreseeable future also, Frank is cute. best dog award 2024

To wade or anyone else, 1000% watch Dragon Ball (OG). it's so charming and shows why goku is the way he is in later series. it really puts a lot of perspective into place...then revisit Z! i watched it, and Z in order for the first time in 2019 or so, and loved every second of it. personally i recommend the ORIGINAL soundtrack versions (dubbed). there's alternate versions that are i think a little more popular in the US with different music that makes it more "serious", but IMO i love the goofy original Japanese music. (also for purists, i still recommend English dub, his VA is just so much better in English) (also didn't watch Z KAI, the filler isn't THAT bad, except for maybe in the frieza arc)
