** ABOUT ME **
Hello! My name is Jay, and I am a long-time veteran of storytelling and a semi-seasoned DM! I began playing Dungeons and Dragons roughly 5 years ago and began my first ever game as the DM. I figured things out by watching online games and fumbling my way through the rules, and never looked back! I've fallen in love with TTRPG's in general and want to share my experience and thoughts with the world and community I love so much. I currently DM two separate games regularly, and continue to learn every day.
** ABOUT THE CHANNEL **
Play Your Role is a project with the intention of helping inspire and coach players and DM’s alike to add story beats and dramatic moments into their games through basic writing concepts, interesting player character inspirations, and discussions on how to effectively roleplay in a way that helps (not hinders) everyone else's roleplay at the table!

I've got two stories I want to discuss. One is of my first paladin. I've always taken an aspect of myself and put it in my characters, because that's a good way to explore things that are harder to explore without trained help. This character was angry. I don't mean frustrated or upset, I mean angry. In combat he was vicious and brutal and enjoyed seeing enemies hurt. But that got to focus when the campaign picked up. He suddenly found himself being asked to save a world that had been unkind and downright cruel to him. And he agreed. And so that anger changed. It changed from 'The world is unfair and uncaring' into 'I am going to make it fair'. And after sessions and sessions of fighting and investigating, he found the source of his anger was rooted into the story. And after fighting through and saving the one person who could pull him out of this spiral of rage and hatred, he lost his oath of vengeance. And in that moment, of realizing he'd completed his oath and proven something to me, I broke down sobbing at the table. It made several people break down and start sobbing. We watched him fight so hard for a world he hated, and it was worth it. All his pain and anger was worth it. I, as well as several of my friends, have had very bad lives. So seeing that it can all be worth it in the end mattered. And the reason I've said all that is to talk about a different story. I ran a game, and my best friend was playing a barbarian. She had amnesia and didn't know what drove her anger or rage. And when they finally met an npc who knew her, she immediately latched on. There was always an undercurrent in every social situation she was in where you could feel her building to a rage she didn't understand, and it finally led to a confrontation that almost got the entire party killed. And afterwards, she took that npc aside, and started sobbing against them, begging them for answers for what was wrong with them. And I, as a dungeon master, had to pause my narration to cry with them. Because I've felt that. Getting to fully explore that paladin's anger made me realize how much of that gets directed back at yourself. It made me realize that when nobody else is angry, you feel like there is something wrong with you. And if it wasn't for that experience, of exploring an aspect of myself that scares me, I wouldn't have been able to relate to that. I wouldn't have been able to hug my friend and tell her truthfully that there was nothing wrong with her character. This all probably reads as a massive scrawl of an idiot who doesn't get it, but I wasn't seeing anyone else sharing stories that prove your point, so I thought I'd start. Empathy is something that's taken from us by the world, and stories (dnd especially) are one of the best places to relearn it.

Unfortunately (im not saying this a jerk, promise) , it's probably because it's because the 1st 4 minutes of the video weren't why most of us clicked on it. Nor were they entertaining in an unexpected way. Regardless on anyone opinion on the situation, it was effectively a 4 minute ad right at the opening. Probably should have made a mention at the beginning and then explained at the end. :/

Wow. That is a wonderful reflection and goal adjustment. I've been watching for a good while now, and I really appreciate that you aren't afraid to stand up for the marginalized so consistently. Whether it be LGBTQIA+ people or the people of Gaza, you've been a great advocate. It's so easy for channels like this to fall into being incredibly apolitical to the point that they become a cesspool where even the worst ideas can fester, and any pushback (no matter how small) from the channel results in a huge backlash for doing the bare minimal in the right direction. Thank you for being you, and thank you for standing by your principles. #freepalestine

I usually don't comment on videos because I rarely have anything of value to add but it seems everyone's helping with the algorithm and I decided that I would too. I am a traumatized person who doesn't yet have a job or any means to earn money, so therapy is not an option for me. I still have a few years of study ahead of me and... my problems, make it hard for me to progress. Ttrpgs have done a lot for me. And I'm glad that some internet stranger introduced me to it.

Idk how much of it was D&D and how much of it was simply growing up, but I’ll recognize that I was pretty shitty when I first started playing D&D. I did multiple things to purposefully mess with or hurt other players because I thought it would make the table more fun. I still cringe when I think about it. And nowadays I feel like I’m super conscious of my actions and how they affect others. I am truly a better person and I think that D&D may not have caused it, but it certainly does up the process.

An amazing video- I often use characters to explore philosophical or psychological concepts, like my current PC is a upper class warlock raised on a (false) idea that hard work always brings success, and it’s so interesting seeing his inferiority and superiority based on that idea, being superior because of his “hardworking” lineage, but inferior as he places so much value in a hierarchical system that does not really value him unless he gets lucky or plays cut-throat ( he was “encouraged” out if the house to find his own success and has had difficulties) and his development away from his elitist world view into something more compassionate and healthy is something I’m so exited to see.

I never really watched Steven Universe but caught one random episode with my sister. It had the song Here Comes a Thought, & I still can't listen to that song without crying. It hit me so hard with my anxiety & PTSD. It was the first time a piece of media told me it's okay to not be perfect & I could still be loved even if I wasn't perfect. It's still something I struggle with so much, but that feeling of being so seen & understood when I really needed it is something I'll never forget.

For me, the story that hit me HARDEST was the expansion for Final Fantasy XIV called "Endwalker". (Spoilers for Endwalker) Throughout the story, the end of reality has come. A being of oblivion, nihility, and despair singing the end of all things. And in your fight with the Endsinger, she tells you that there is no value in life, that oblivion has no pain, to give up, give in, etc. Words I have had in my mind since I was 13 (over 25 years). As she is about to defeat you, your friends pray for your safety then you hear them. Reminding you that you have faced this before and always win. That you aren't alone and that you never give up... all while the boss theme changed to one of victory. Your boss theme. And now the Endsinger's attacks while strong qre now random, she is panicking because she knows she LOST and now you just have to finish the battle. I sat sobbing after because it hit hard. Still does. And when I feel defeated or depressed, I turn on "With Hearts Aligned" and remember I have already won, I just needed a reminder.
