I was a liiittle bit disappointed that you showed pictures of the band Orphaned Land from Israel, but didn't mention their name and the amazing story that evolved around this band. They're all about dialogue, peace and unity between the different people and religions in the Middle East, incorporating various traditional instruments, different languages (English, Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish, Yemenite, ...) and fusing styles like progressive metal, (middle eastern) folk music or even hebrew prayer chants. Their music is quite unique, they're really good in terms of technique (without being too technical) and have a serious message. Not my overall favorite band or artist (might be Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson - Opeth, Rush and Pink Floyd are also strong contenders), but they easily make my top 20 (also live, had the chance of seeing them twice here in Germany).

Other awesome bands not mentioned: Iced Earth (USA), Blind Guardian (Germany), Kreator (Germany), Judas Priest (UK), Turisas (Finland), and Sevendust (USA, if you want to count them as metal). Cool video. Definitely gonna check out that Mongolian band. Love when metal fuses with local traditional stuff.

Sevendust got me into hard rock/metal along with Pantera. I'd say that counts. More: Eluveitie, Soilwork, August Burns Red, Beartooth, Gojira and After the Burial.

Hey great video! I have bachelor’s degrees in international geography and soon music, and my geography capstone project in 2016 was on the geography of metal. So if you ever need data I collected from metal-archives in 2016 haha, I’ve got it for every country on number of bands, per capita, and breakdown by subgenre so you can really see some sonic and lyrical trends and disparity around the world. Plus crappy maps I made on ArcGIS. I’ve also got theories why like for example Sweden has produced so many metal bands possibly due to a strong social system and support for the arts, while Indonesia hasn’t produced the number of bands but has created so much brutal death metal maybe partially in reaction to past government instability. Anyways, I’m always so happy to see this subject covered so thank you very much!

@@peffify Probably the most famous Italian band worldwide is Lacuna Coil, but there are many bands here playing most kinds of metal music. The main issues of the Italian scene are that the audience is very small, and it's difficult for bands to play gigs in front of many people, and for venues to survive. Also most bands are still playing the same kind of music that used to be popular decades ago.

What I like the most about metal music is that in many occasions bands take inspiration from literature (especially ancient one), folklore or pop culture for their lyrics. This takes music to a whole different level
