You did not bear the shame. You resisted. You bestowed the eternally vigilant signal to turn back by sacrificing your impassioned lives for freedom, justice and honour. -German Mermorial to Resistance
@obserwator17662 жыл бұрын
The conspirators of 20.07.1944 planned to kill Hitler (from 1943) because they understood that he was dragging the Third Reich to the bottom. At about the same time, and for the same reason, the Allies stopped trying to kill Hitler. From the Polish perspective, considering that they wanted to save Germany as it was (authoritarian, imperialist, militaristic, etc.) and knowing about their plans and attitude towards Poland (Carl Goerdeler), I am happy that they did not succeed. Claus von Stauffenberg in a letter from Poland to his wife: "The local population is an unbelievable mob, a lot of Jews and hybrids. A nation that needs a whip to feel good." Similar attitudes towards Poland were also shared by others, for example Helmuth James von Moltke. In any case, I won't say R.I.P.

Very interesting again Stefan. There were also many German deserters who joined the various resistance movements where they were stationed and fought against the regime. Desertion had become a great problem for the German armed forces, I remember reading that thousands of deserters had been sheltered in Paris only to emerge after the liberation. There were also the thousands of unknown resisters who struggled alone in their own ways most of whom will remain anonymous, what your film showed that there was a lot of opposition to the Nazi government but that its fragmentation made it much less effective than its numbers suggest. Von Stauffenburg was also associated with the group around Strik-Strikfeldt who would've continued the war on the Eastern front by changing policies and mobilising anti-communist Russians.
@thethirdman2252 жыл бұрын
The fact was that the resistance movement against Hitler in Germany was very small. There were those who did not resist but aided Jews and others but those who actively opposed him were extremely small in number. It has long been a misconception - especially among Americans - that with a bit of extra support and luck, they might have succeeded in assassinating Hitler (an especially virulent belief among gun enthusiasts) and the war would be over. A lot of this comes from a lack of understanding of how a totalitarian state functions. By the time of Barbarossa, Hitler's popularity was guaranteed. Despite obvious murderous policies and unremitting cruelty, he had attained practically sainthood among the German people. Even those who had opposed him politically had to admit he had delivered on what he promised. There were all kinds of subtle acknowledgements which drip fed this myth of the demigod. There were sycophantic poems, songs and propaganda movies, all designed not so much to convince as to alter perception. Even terms like 'Fuehrer weather' - a warm sunny day - were part of the German vernacular. The daily greeting, 'Gruss Gott!' had been supplanted by 'Heil Hitler!', and not just among party members. We can regret that the resistance was small and fragmented and we can also regret that it was doomed to failure. Unfortunately, it always was. There were so many opportunities for Hitler not to have succeeded: he might have been killed in WWI or in the mini-civil war that saw the Freikorps defeat the Raeterepublik government in 1919. He might never have had the opportunities had he not been in Munich when he was after the war. He might never have attracted the interest of people like Fritz Thyssen. The fact was that Hitler arrived at a unique time in history and he could only have succeeded in that period.

Sorry Stefan, I've no information about Köln. Separately, I know the dates of death of my two German great-grandfathers. One in May 1939 and one in December 1939. My Oma would tell me that they were given injections in the hospital under the guise of a mandatory check-up. These conversations were in the U.S.. When I would tell my mother about this (so long ago), she would tell me not to listen to my grandmother (her mother) because she did not know what she was talking about. I believe that T4 Aktion started before September 1939, but I have no proof. Thank you for the research that you have done. It is rare for me to find an American U.S. citizen that knows anything about the history in your lecture. Few even know about Sophie Scholl. Ik wens je het beste.

It is wonderful that some Germans opposed the Nazi regime and wanted it overthrown, although it meant that many would be killed or put into concentration camps for it. Some, such as Sophie Scholl of the White Rose movement, were killed for opposing Hitler's ideology. We owe a great debt to those who gave their lives fighting the Nazis. May they rest in peace. Yes, we also owe a great debt to those who fought against the Japanese in the Pacific, although this is for another story.

"I Will Bear Witness" by Victor Klemperer is a two volume diary of the Nazi era. Klemperer was a Lutheran with a Lutheran wife, but legally a Jew under Nazi race laws. Klemperer's parent had been Jews. He wore a Jewish star. He survived the Nazi era in Dresden. His diary describes his day to day struggles, but also many small acts of kindness. He describes an event similar to what you describe in this video. Klemperer was arrested by the local police, along with others with Jewish associations. The Christian wives of the arrested men made scenes in and around police headquarters. The police were intimidated and released the men.

Good topic, well presented. It resonates with what is happening now in Russia, where internal resistance has become increasingly difficult. Many Germans could not else than stay silent, because speaking out against the regime could cost their life. I have read of numerous stories where normal Germans individually helped forced labor prisoners of war ir other victims to get through these hard times. I will do also some research on that Ehrenfeld uprising. Thanks!
@mammuchan89232 жыл бұрын
I was also thinking it reminds me of the current situation in Russia.I think it took the average German quite long to figure out this was not going to end well. I think this is due to their heavy focus on propaganda. Russian propaganda is pathetic, no wonder people are fleeing in droves.

@monkeydank78422 жыл бұрын
When we except the last month of the war hardly any. Captivity wasn’t an option in the east and southeast and the resistance in the west wasn’t welcoming either. So there were hardly any places to go to.
@trafalgarlaw71092 жыл бұрын
We will never know the real numbers but what I can tell you is that the Wehrmacht examined 156.500 cases of desertion. 30.000 of them got death penalty's and 23.000 of those got killed. Another 100.000 got other penalties like imprisonment or were put in penalty battalions such as the well known "Bewährungsbataillon 500". Today historians/experts estimate that there were around 400.000 deserters. That means that only 1/3 of them got busted by the field police.
@trafalgarlaw71092 жыл бұрын
If you are interested in this topic there are some movies I could recommend. The German movie "Der Hauptmann" focused on deserters and you can see one of the camps they were imprisoned. In Generation War you can see one of those penalty batallions

Patton made many nonsensical statements. Even bordering on antisemitism. A general despised by many and who contributed to Allied war crimes. Furthermore he was a general and not a politician, so he had no authority on this. And even if he was a politician, just one person stating this bizarre thing is not a valid argument. Revisionists often use his quote for their own agenda. Please watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHOVq42NoJ6HnLc kzbin.info/www/bejne/moivYYGwacxor80

It's almost impossible to even imagine living in that time. Propaganda played a major role in brainwashing alot of people. Then they were people who, understandably were frightened to rebel or condemn nazis. Its a human instinct just to survive and I think alot people just wanted to do that. Nazis and German people is two completely different things and meaning. German people also suffered at the hands of nazis. Im British and worked in Germany for 2 years in early 90s and have nothing but praise love and respect for the German people I met. I made some lifelong friends. ❤

The politics and actions of the German people in the 20s, 30s, and 40s is complex while the WW1 armistice agreement placed the blame for the war on Germany and imposed sever measures on the people this combined with the great depression certainly caused an increase in extremist beliefs on the right and the left (much like we are seeing today). The military people were naturally conservative and the prominence of the military in German society at that time along with the desire to rebuild the German empire propelled the NAZIs into prominence but as the war progressed against the Germans from what Germans I have known who lived in that time have said they turned against the Nazis and the government with many telling of people in the final months of the war killing NAZI officials who tried to stop people from fleeing the Russians or otherwise placing people in danger they were trying to avoid.

So, we have a few Nazis who wanted to kill Hitler out of some strange belief that they could still win the war; some royalists who hated the Nazis for seizing power by stating the same beliefs as themselves, only more effectively; some communists who probably didn’t disagree with any Nazi racial policies but basically wanted a borscht-flavoured dictatorship rather than a sauerkraut-flavoured one; one ineffective last-minute armed uprising; and a bunch of students who handed out pamphlets. In other words, nothing. Meanwhile, the vast majority of the German population at the time supported Hitler, supported the war effort, supported Nazi racial policies, participated in or knew about the Holocaust while it happened; and loved their leader for it. Yeah, no. Not impressed. The servility and venality of the German people is the single defining aspect of their culture and the single cause of the war.
