Conservative Talk I have a 10 year old male German shepherd, not fixed...if I could go back in time I would have got it done. He's never bred and I feel it's cruel to keep him intact but never let him have a female. My 10 month old Rottweiler will get fixed at 2 years old. They say for bigger dogs 2 is best age as the body and dog mentally are fully mature. Maybe if I decide to breed him I'll keep him intact, but most likely fix him at 2.

First of all, they show mainly American-bred German Shepherds with sloped backs that cause hip dysplasia. Secondly, the German Shepherd was NEVER a sheep herding dog. It was bred by a German Captain (Von Steffanitz) who wanted a dog that could be used as a war dog as well as a dog that could send messages between camps. I own a GSD, and I love the breed. This video does not do it justice.
@saddleridge43645 жыл бұрын
Yes, most people don't know there are Shepherds out there with strong original German breeding. I was lucky enough to actually find one with German bloodlines. I have seen German Shepherds that are really a step down from the German lines. They are small, don't have the muscular build and bones like iron that the German lines do.

@inlinek9394 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old thread, but for those people still watching this and reading these comments, the above comment is incorrect: the GSDs in this film are almost exclusively West German Show Line dogs, not American! They even show clips from the Sieger show in Germany! The "sloped" back (as it's described) does NOT contribute to hip dysplasia. There is zero connection. This "sloping" topline is often exaggerated due to the way the dog is stacked when standing. Straight shoulder assemblies, over angulated rear structures, flat withers, steep croups can also do this. The GSD is a trotting dog, longer than tall, with angulation in their structure, not straight and almost square like a Labrador. (Too much info to get into here.) The GSD was a herding dog (hence the name "shepHERD") and still is. There are still lines that are bred for their herding abilities. That's what the HGH title is all about!! Max v. Stephanitz' goal was to produce the ultimate, most versatile, intelligent and loyal working-herding dog, whether it was for herding, guarding, police or military work, as a companion, a guard dog, protection dog, search and rescue dog, etc.

I don't know if they truly ARE the best dog breed in the world, lot of factors could "determine" that, however I'm willing to bet 95% of GSD owners have loved and been stuck with wanted only that breed. They are smart, they are strong and loyal to a fault. Their greatest downfall is the hip dysplasia, and their idea that they can be vicious and murderous due to their common usage as aggressive fighting dogs like pit bulls and junkyard dogs. I have a GSD pup that's 1yr4mo old and he's the sweetest little companion ever. wicked smart too, but very territorial and defensive.

My first dog was a German Shepherd. I feel I was extremely lucky with that dog, as most others I come across were very dog aggressive. Also, the fact that they try to guard their territory against strangers can lead to dangerous situations if the dog doesn't know where your property ends and public property begins. It's one of the reasons I don't want another German Shepherd, because it's just not a risk I'm willing to take. The second reason is that they shed like no other breed I've ever encountered, possibly even more than a Husky. And unlike short haired dog's fur, the German Shepherd fur is extremely hard to get out of your clothes after cuddles. So you either need to get changed after cuddling your dog, or you just don't cuddle them at all when you're about to go out somewhere where you need to look neat. And lastly, although this is avoidable by getting a dog from a breeder who gets his dogs' hips x-rayed and only breeds with healthy dogs, hip dysplasia is a major problem in the breed. (Ours was a rescue and suffered greatly from this.) I'm by no means hating on the breed, just trying to prepare those who want one for what they'll have to deal with for the next 12 years. I am aware of the many great qualities German Shepherds have, to the point that I'm sometimes tempted to forget why I decided not to get another one, and start looking for a breeder. I just wish breed documentaries (and written articles too) would also prepare potential buyers for the down sides, instead of just making them all seem like perfect little angels. It's a major problem I'm encountering as I'm trying to decide which breed I want to buy, because no matter what breed you try to look up, they're somehow all "the smartest, the most loyal, the most versatile, the most patient with children, etc" (except for a very few breeds who are made out to be absolute devils, which obviously can't be true either).

This video is entirely based around the German shepherd show line dogs.. with their arched backs that have become desirable throughout the show arena sadly a cost to the health of the animal causing structural issues such as dysplasia in the hips and elbows. This is not how they were originally bred and not how you see conformation in the working line German shepherds. In addition to this the dietary information is not necessarily accurate either as raw proteins such as lamb, beef rabbit etc is acceptable. Further research should have transpired before producing this video to ensure the overall health of the breed. IMO.
