The games soundtrack is godly. Well done for comparing the game locations to how they look in real life! The attention to detail is truly unbelievable!

Charlie’s Warehouse near Borough Market is the same location as Bacon’s gaff where they have the shootout in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels 🤯

I spotted that as well. I wonder if that is a nod to Lock, Stock or just sheer coincidence?

I still don’t understand why there isn’t more games like the getaway. More Games based off the “gritty” uk dramas from the 70s-2000s would be bloody awesome. There’s barely any games set in the uk!

Fantastic video RacingFreak, I absolutely adore 6th generation city-based open world games. There's just something so nostalgic about how impressive and accurate these maps are given the hardware and the legacy they've left behind. I like to think of them as a time machine to the millenium, and The Getaway is no exception. I gained a lot of interest in this game after playing Stuntman's London level, and it's been very educational. Congratulations on the site launch, and I hope to see more in the near future!

Absolutely outstanding, great leg work getting all those photos of the locations too! It's sorta sad how much has changed in a way, it reminds me just how old this game is. Seems like only yesterday I was playing it for the first time on Christmas day in 2002. Did you manage to get any pictures of the old City Link depot (Charlie's depot in King's Cross)?

I'll assume that the in-game world in general would be far more accurate to the real world London from the early 2000s but this brings me to a silly question: Were there any key storyline locations in the game that looked nothing like the real world equivalent (even in 2002)? In other words, places that the developers went full creative liberty?
@RacingFreak3 жыл бұрын
From the locations directly compared so far, the Yardie Crackhouse on Rivington Street certainly stands out the most to me as it bears very little to no resemblance to the real life location, in fact the entire surrounding area is quite different there. You can still tell they used some design elements from the actual buildings there, but for the most part it is a good example of creative liberty.
@michaelholt50693 жыл бұрын
There's much MUCH more artistic license going on in Black Monday but as for the first game, key deviations I observed from the research for this project were: - The Rivington Street terraces (in reality it's effectively an alleyway with some bars in and seemingly has been for quite some time) - Snow Hill Police Station (a transplant of the building used to represent the exterior of Sun Hill in The Bill, actually located in Merton, near Wimbledon - way outside of the game's boundaries) - Charlie's Depot (another transplant, this time of a warehouse in Bermondsey - just outside of the game's boundaries) - St Saviour's Dock (which in reality is residential usage and not commercial) - University College Hospital ('based on reality' - whilst there is a hospital there in real life, the in-game version is a significant redesign compared to how the hospital looked - in either it's pre or post-2006 guise) - Serpentine Gallery (much like UCH - the in-game location is a significant redesign of a real location)

@@michaelholt5069 Very comprehensive - the former The Bill studios (63 Windsor Avenue, SW19) do look like the Snow Hill used in the game, even to this day - 12 years after The Bill finished production.

weirdest part is I remember the Lenny Kravitz billboard at St Giles circus, which was in the game at that location but the version you have doesn't have it
@BenjinWS3 жыл бұрын
Is it true that the internal layout of Snow Hill Police Station was based on Sun Hill Police Station from The Bill? You can find a room layout, floor-by-floor, of Sun Hill online somewhere.
@RacingFreak3 жыл бұрын
It is indeed and as a fellow The Bill fan I can confirm that! It might not be 100% accurate to Sun Hill's layout, but it is the only full-scale recreation ever made of it for a game and will likely remain so as the original set is already long gone by now, only the exterior of the building remains mostly unchanged. Yet another reason why I love The Getaway so much :)
@MrPolicekarim3 жыл бұрын
The reason why is that it had the same advisor, Trevor Hermes. He left The Bill and set u his own background extras agency. They did the Armed Response team for The Layer Cake!

How tf did they manage to make a 1 to 1 city replica back on the ancient ps2 😱yet nowadays with better hardware we still don't have a modern open world game that does the same??? HOW?! It's clearly possible the getaway exists.
@JuanDomingoMartin3 ай бұрын
As much as I love The Getaway, it’s not comparable to nowadays. The PS2 allowed much less quality and less 3D models, and also graphics weren’t very ‘sharp’ to say something, so most of the buildings were textures with some 3D details. Lets say that it was easier to make something look real. This is not true at all but I hope that you get my point. If you were about to replicate the same city in a 2024 game, you’ll spend hours just modelling a sidewalk and creating the textures. The Getaway original map would feel weird and very simple in a modern game, despite being an amazing recreation of London even if it’s more than 20 years old.

@@JuanDomingoMartin Play this Game on a HDMI Converter Upscaler Converter, Man It Almost looks like a new Game, It's Brilliant, It Doesn't work on all games, But on The Getaway on 720p looks Amazing, Don't know about no 2, But it works on the first one, So i should Imagine it will work on The Getaway 2. It's as Sharp as Hell With the Converter Mate, If you have one for the PS2 Try it, If not Get one.

It's a rather complex camera hack which I haven't got around releasing as it no longer works properly with newer builds of PCSX2, but that'll be sorted out eventually in the future.
