I remember being told of this story when I was a child at school in the town. Not mentioned in the film, there was also a legend that there was a tunnel between the Chequers and the church. I vaguely remember in the version I heard that the men accessed the church through the tunnel.

Excellent. I think I was at college with a descendent of one of the gamesters. He was from Holbeach and cursed with incredibly hairy nostrils, like the ends of a couple of chimney sweeps brushes. it makes sense now. Good to see the tomb of Zaphod Beeblebrox also, I bet he knew where his towel was 👌
@Seany632 жыл бұрын
Ha ha Zaphod, I wish I had thought of that. Funny enough there was a towel on a table close to the tomb so I think you maybe on to something. Well, what a strange bloke. You have reminded me of another nosey guy from another town in the shire.👌

Always interesting your uploads. Really good story and factual too. You cannot beat local legends especially when the participants were real. Shame the graveyard is so overgrown now. Would have been a real find if the headstones were still legible. Cheers

Cheers Kelly. Well, trying to find the graves was just an afterthought. I am snowed under with work right now, but its something I would really like to pursue when I have time. I need to access parish records.

You have a gift my friend for telling an eerie story at no mistake, i was glued to that until the end! Many churches etc have eerie pasts to them but somehow you made that one stand out. Lol i was half expecting someone to jump out behind that alter or a gravestone as a joke. No that was really interesting and good. It's one of those tales once you've heard you never forget.

More has been discovered about Sir Humphrey in recent years. Its now known he died in 1339 and was quite active as a Royal Servant. One time Admiral of the English Navy and briefly constable of New Radnor Castle. The Sir Humphrey who died during the Wars of the Roses was a descendent of his.
