It seems like there should be a much clearer, immediate, and unambiguous pressure loss warning in the cockpit, one that would give the pilots more than ample time to get their own oxygen masks on so they can maintain control of the plane.....

What gets me is that the master caution came on after the initial warning horn was heard. In a 737 if a master caution lights up usually you'll get an indication on a small panel next to the master caution light and that should have lit the "air cond" warning up. How they missed it all always haunts me. Rip
@speedbird9313

The captain though it was the equipment cooling fault that tripped the master caution warning, so AIR COND did light up on the six-pack.

I recently saw a Mayday video where there was a fire that had started in the lavatory. After a few minutes, the fumes were so bad that passengers were gasping and choking. The commentator pointed that the supplemental oxygen (via drop down masks) was not made available because of an airline “rule” that prohibited their use when a fire was in the cabin. My feeling is that regardless of the risk to feed the flames (which had not yet entered the passenger cabin), it should hsve been used under those circumstances. The plane eventually crash lands at the airport and autopsies revealed that most people on board had already perished from toxic smoke inhalation. I would like to ask the very knowledgable audience of these reenactments what they think about this policy.

I could not believe that the moment pilot & co-pilot felt dizzy, they did not pull their oxygen mask line. They can still try to figure out the issue but not putting on their masks is a serious mistake.
@Ozymandi_as

The masks do not drop automatically in the cockpit, and if the pilots did not understand the depressurization situation, for example, because it did not happen suddenly, then then hypoxia would have overwhelmed their ability to recognise what was happening to them.

Once again, this accident happened due to lack of common sense, communication and procrastination, the pilots had no clue what was going on back there with the passengers, had the flight attendants use their common sense to communicate the situation without wasting time and let the pilots know that the oxygen masks mysteriously drop down for some strange reason, maybe that would've given the pilots a better picture of what might have been the problem, it might have made them check the pressurization, but they had no clue the masks had fallen, lack of communication, common sense and procrastination caused this accident, but at least this was a better way to go cause they were all unconscious before the airplane crashed, to die that way was a blessing in itself, unlike other plane crashes where everyone is aware they are going to crash, yet they die with a horrifying fear

This is why regulations are written in blood. They should've contacted the flight deck to tell them the masks had dropped but they were following procedures. I don't know what flight attendants know about the cockpit but it's also possible they assumed a warning would've come on saying the masks had dropped and they were already working on an issue.

@deezkhajiit184 this is why it's so important to use common sense and they didn't, sometimes one must bend the rules in order to do the right thing, following procedures is not always the right thing when a situation is out of place

I really don't know if it's that simple or any of that would have helped. First: When the masks drop, you treat it like the emergency it likely is. As said, hypoxia can hit shockingly fast. It's why the safety warning is to put your mask on *first* before assisting anyone next to you. Because by the time you get their mask on, you're probably already in the danger zone yourself. Second: At least in the early moments of an emergency, if the pilots are dealing with a crisis, I don't know if you want the cabin crew popping in 30 seconds in. Best case scenario in a worst case scenario, cabin crew coming in with "the masks have dropped!" will be responded with "I'm sure they have, STFU, help the cabin, and await instructions". Again, assuming the pilots are dealing with an immense crisis, cabin crew is just going to distract them and add noise. The point is to get the plane stable, and then when everybody has a moment to breathe (no morbid pun intended), then we can take stock and start communicating with everybody. There's just no point in the cabin crew chiming in in the initial moments of an emergency. Third: An olive branch to the above though. After ~5 minutes with zero contact, the cabin crew really should have tried calling up. Which they do! But that's the problem. The masks drop because of the lack of oxygen. The cockpit doesn't have automatic deploying masks. And hypoxia hits after a minute. 2 minutes into the 12 minutes the cabin has, the pilots are out cold. A normal flight is all but doomed at this point. Any normal person that takes their mask off to try and head up to the cockpit is doomed. Luckily this flight had that super flight attendant though. If he had reacted faster and moved up sooner, could he have made the difference? Maybe, but we're well into "Coulda Woulda Shoulda" territory here. He still tried to revive them, but it failed. They don't really go into detail about how long he waited before trying to contact the pilots. But they did everything right in the first 2 minutes. But it was those first 2 minutes that sealed everybody's fate.

@@MoonLight-zk3gm If the masks are dropping you assume there's an emergency and you assume the pilots are aware of it. The last thing you'd want to do is go up and bug the pilots when they could be in the middle of handling a crisis.

This was sad (as all crashes with no survivers are). It is even sadder that Google allows the horrific aftermath photos from this flight to remain.😢 Give all on board some dignity and respect. Remove the photos!

I don’t see how that is disrespectful. If anything, it is more respectful as it makes sure their deaths are not forgotten.

This series is not about showing respect. It is a teaching moment and must present the truth, however horrifying.
