The Ghost Train Theme (Series 2)

Thought I'd get back at finishing off some more Series 1 and 2 stuff. I like the fact they borrowed the horror motif from 'The Flying Kipper' with the classic string stabs reminiscent of old Horror movies.
The thing that did creep me out though, was Percy covered in toilet paper. He actually looked scary, along with Boulder's face and close ups of that dreaded troublesome truck from Series 1 would always make me uncomfortable as a kid lol.

This theme is unsettling in a way unlike the S5 music - this is more along the lines of traditional infrasonic horror music and creeps its way into your ears. A sensory assault like none other. Very, very good rendition.

Beautifully put. Really like what you mentioned about "A sensory assault like none other" The Ghost Train Theme always struck fear into me as a child, even now as an adult I find it unnerving when heard on a tape that's really showing it's age. The S5 music is nice, but more fit for campfire stories. This theme verges on psychological horror as it shrieks at you while a dead engine soars across your screen. You don't know if they're haunting the rails with ill intentions, or if they're simply a lost soul, warning others not to venture down the same path they did when they were alive. The question, to me, was always "Is the ghost engines existence a warning told by others who have seen them? Or does the ghost appear to warn engines/people personally?" All of that uncertainty is honestly my crack as a horror fan. We fear the unknown, because our imagination loves filling in the blanks.

@@kalebwillisyt9825 I was a toddler when first watched that episode and heard that theme. I first saw and heard it when it showed on Shining Time Station. Every time I watched, I never knew which story was going to play. Even when it turned to "Percy's Ghostly Trick," scared as I was, I still watched it anyway. Why? I don't know. Perhaps I was glued or perhaps I had no definition of the term "fear" at the time. I'll never know which. But either way, I didn't feel like purchasing the tape that had that story.

I love S5's ominous music of the Proteus woodwind and string instruments (like in Haunted Henry for exmaple). But personally, the use of the Jupiter presets used in S1-2 for scary/danger themes like this one just sounds way more unsettling and creepy (or tense and nerve-wrecking depending on the theme). This theme sounds like it's out of a horror film and that's why I like it. It perfectly sets the mood for the beginning of Percy's Ghostly Trick. Definetly one of the most iconic themes of S2 and the classic series overall.

Mine too, nothing bests this theme. 👻 If you look for more darker versions; it's more than just Ghost Trains, it's also the theme of THE presumed Ghost Train of Sodor...it turned out to be a demonic train called..."Timothy". Timothy is the demonic spirit of a prototype E2 Class Steam Engine, just like his young brother Thomas. He used to be brown with the number 101, but then he turned silver with age & his 101 soon turned into a pure 0. The story states that long ago before Thomas arrived; Timothy was at a station about to pull his passenger carriages, "Full steam ahead" said his Driver & "Sure thing..." replied Timothy. They soon puffed out of the station, but Timothy soon speeded faster and faster. They went away from the Main Line & Timothy's Driver's saw that Timothy was heading for the area where a viaduct was to built, the Driver screamed in terror "You're going to kill us all!!" "I'm going to send you all to the Graveyard!" Timothy said, as his demonic side finally took over himself and they crashed into the ditch. All the passengers, the Driver & the Fireman were confirmed dead, the carriages were shattered to bits & Timothy was charred beyond recognition. His demonic spirit still roams the lines; hidden in the shadows, with red smoke coming from both his wheels and his funnel. When he does appear; the temperature drops, fog rolls in and his demonic whistle can be heard. Thomas was too young to know about Timothy's death. He's my second favourite horror villain, bested by Red from the horror story, simply called "NES Godzilla".

I loved the fan fiction that was about the Other Railway, and how it included a story about how Douglas crashed into a drug dealer's car and got coated with coke. He then decided to pretend to be a ghost to a couple of diesels resting in the shed, but they sucked some of the coke into their air intakes and absolutely freaked out.

time to make this sound creepier Once i was at school at my oldest sister's basketball game i was in 3rd grade she was in 7th but i was with my 2nd grader friend and we went to the blacktop. but the field was right there. it was actually pretty dark outside and I saw some person in the field and I remember i waved and then he waved back. My friend danced and the person danced. we started moving back and the creature moved forward we moved back faster and IT STARTED RUNNING! we ran into the gymnasium where the game was and ran behind the stage. I cried behind the curtains while my friend told his sister (also playing in the basketball). who knows it could've been a student or some homeless dude or it could have been a monster. I had an ipad with me and I took a picture of it. I am still frightened

I think that the Jupiter-6 was the perfect synth for S2. It was a more "darker" synth than a Jupiter-8 which perfectly matched the tone of S2. And this piece really shows that. BTW, this recreation is amazing bro!

It was February 22, 1910. Engine #25 had just left Spokane, Washington headed for Seattle. Onboard were different passengers from all walks of life from commuters and hobos headed for work to families with young children on vacation. The train was stopped in the town of Wellington, which no longer exists. A heavy blizzard came in and the train was stranded in Wellington as the snow had piled up over the tracks and covered many of the coaches. Some people left the train to find help while others remained behind and decided to pass the time until the snow had cleared. 6 days later, a violent thunderstorm hit the mountain pass. Rain and lightning caused a large sheet of packed snow to come cascading down the mountain along with trees and rocks. In the early morning hours of March 1, the avalanche slammed into the train and sent most of its passengers and crew over the edge of a large embankment. Rescue crews arrived and saved 23 passengers and crew but 96 poor souls were not so lucky. They died in the Wellington Avalanche of 1910. The railway route was eventually abandoned along with the town of Wellington. However it is said that on the anniversary of the Avalanche, people walking the hiking trail along the old train route have heard the phantom sound of a train whistle and bell, followed by the roar of an avalanche and panicked screams. Others have seen phantom lights near the snow shed. One night, I was walking when I heard the sound of a train whistle and I turned and saw a ghostly steam locomotive heading my way! I jumped out of the way as the train vanished!
