I stayed here a few years back and had a personal tour of the place (I was scouting it for a company event). I hear about all of the stories (and then some!). It is one of the first Canadian Pacific Hotel Chain which is now the world-wide Fairmont Hotel & Spa chain. The interesting thing about 'dancing in the ballroom' is - when she was seen, she was cut off at her knees ... (the ballroom shown in the photo is not the ballroom she would have danced in). The actual 'ballroom' is now a restaurant ... with a new floor, built about 15-20 inches above the original one. The staircase where the woman died on, apparently her gown caught fire on the candles. And, if you "look closely", you can "see" the blood stain in the marble at the bottom. (Somewhere in the marble's marbling.) As for the "missing room" - yes, it is obvious there is something odd, but not quite as obvious as this video makes it sound. And, yes - the room on floor 8 has been turn into a suite. I saw it. The 8th floor has a lot of suites on it, and it is one floor less expensive than the 9th floor - which is one room, a 2 storey room, with it's own elevator. So, it does make sense this was turned into a suite. The hotel was also burned down early in its life and when it was rebuilt, they did find a room with no door. Missing in the original plans. It has an amazing ground floor as there are a lot of beautiful stores ... and every person that works there has their own ghostly tale! (There's also one about a golfer on the golf course - which is right beside the hotel.) Yes, the hotel is open to guests, but it is quite expensive. Average price on a weeknight, off season, per night, is around $1500 CA. There is also an amazing, spectacular spa there! If you go, make sure to take your swim needs! (Plus there are hotsprings just up the road.) In addition, many famous people have stayed at the Banff Springs, including royalty from all over the world, and film stars, including Marilyn Monroe when she filmed River Of No Return (there's scene in the film that was shot just over the Bow River from the hotel.) Many lovely stories on people who have stayed there! There's also a free tour only available to those who stay there. The history of the area is amazing - During the 1870s, construction started on the ambitious Canadian Pacific Railway, a coast-to coast railway across Canada. The Cave and Basin hot springs were quickly identified as a potential hot tourist attraction. Competing claims by 'discoverers' of the springs for the right to develop them prompted the Canadian government to create a reserve to protect the springs and surrounding area in 1885. Enlarged in 1887 and named the "Rocky Mountains Park of Canada" (later to be renamed Banff National Park), it was Canada’s first national park and the world’s third. (Lake Louise also has an amazing hotel part of the Fairmont chain. The whole area (Banff, Lake Louise, the Kananaskis, the Columnbia Parkway, to Jasper) is becoming very expensive and not as open to random visitors as it once was, but if you can afford it - worth the trip and visit. (Yes I live in the area.)
