Join us as we spend the night at the The REAL Overlook Hotel in Yosemite National Park. The interiors of the Ahwahnee Hotel, which is located in Yosemite National Park was used as detailed inspiration for Stanley Kubrick's horror film...The Shining (1980). Designers at Elstree Studios incorporated the hotel's lobby, elevators and Great Lounge into sets for the Overlook Hotel.

One of the most iconic atmospheric movies I've ever seen. The cast made the film absolutely perfect but equally the settings and and the melancholy feel of the hotel, it actually felt like a depressing place where you could fully understand why men went berserk there penned in during a winter of thick unrelenting snow. Loved this video, watching from England 👍

Stanley Kubrick was an absolute stickler for attention to detail. It's amazing how he mimicked and recreated the interior of this hotel in the movie The Shining. This really felt scary to me! Like a flashback to that movie, which really stays with you! You really played up the drama and did your research! I don't know if you've done it yet, but you guys should consider staying at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, which is where Stephen King said he got the inspiration to write "The Shining." He stayed in room 217. That hotel is supposed to be one of the most haunted hotels in the US and I've read that King had some interesting experiences there.

@@SheilaKarner I never stayed there. I don't think I could! 😂 I stayed at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Indiana, which had no connection to a horror movie but reminded me so much of the hotel in The Shining that I only stayed one day and had to leave because I was so creeped out! So I'm not a candidate for staying at the Stanley Hotel! 🤣

Thank you, Grimm and Jessica, for taking us along! What a treat! Grimm, I could see and hear how much fun you were having. What a special time for you. --- I love the Overlook just for itself, would love to be the caretaker myself. I've heard that the movie has a hidden reference to the Gold Standard on which U.S. money used to be based and connected to the Overlooks' Gold Room. Maybe just a coincidence, but I've noticed how the beautiful Gold Room bears a striking resemblance to the night club called Club Leviathan aboart the ocean liner S.S. Leviathan. The Leviathan began service as the German liner Vaterland (Fatherland) then was seized by the U.S. in 1917 and renamed as the troopship Leviathan. After the war the U.S. kept the Leviathan and she returned to passenger services under the same name for different owners and with mixed degrees of success. The Leviathan was laid up in 1934, I believe, then scrapped in Scotland in 1938. She should have been put in the Reserve Fleet because she would have been so valuable in World War II that was in the near future.

This channel has lately become my go to "TV series" ever since the algorithm recommended the video where you visit Pete Steele's grave (after rewatching a bunch of interviews from the 90s). Only the Colorado Lounge is modeled after the Ahwahnee lobby and it isn’t a replica. Other than the lobby the Overlook is complete different. There is no Overlook hotel. The outside shots are taken from the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood Oregon and the inside of the Overlook was created in Pinewoods Studio in London, UK. This stuff in this video is just a re-creation.

Michael when you said the help desk is fliped in a mirror effect it striked me that there is actually a lot of mirror motive in the movie. When Jack talks in a hallucinate state, he always talks to a mirror with Loyd, Grady, kissing with the rotten lady. Also with the image compositions: the twins, the director classic one point hallway perpectives, the maze mockup when Jack is as if watching Danny and Wendy. Crossing the line with camera angle in the conversation with Grady makes the camera jump in front of it self, or in the stageing: When Jack aproaches Wendy in the stairs, Danny in the end walks backward to hide. And of course the Murder epigraph. Can't let it out.

I would usually go in winter, as hiking elsewhere in Yosemite is very limited when it’s snowing. I often took the YARTS bus (schedule is online) from Merced as I don’t like driving with chains. My friends and I would go up for lunch at the Ahwahnee, then walk to Yosemite Lodge and visit Cook Meadow behind Yosemite Lodge. The views are spectacular! The Ahwahnee is very tastefully decorated during Christmas time, especially that huge fireplace. I hope you do get back there during the 🎄Season and enjoy lunch at the Ahwahnee! @officialGrimmlifecollective-_ would love that. Not trying to act like i could to do a better job, but did you watch the made for Television series/movie? I absolutely hated it. I feel like because Steven King disliked Kubricks film so much that an attempt was made to be more “loyal” to the novel. (Such as the hedge maze stuff.) I read the book in 6th grade haha. I also read The Stand that year. “They” also had a television series about that as well. (Book CRUSHED it). You guys do such a great job with everything and have such a great eye for detail. I have seen more horror films than “most”. Id feel honored to discuss not only my opinion on The Shining but any other horror films. I will write you tomorrow with my comparison thoughts on the film and movie. I love Steven King as we all do obviously but i don’t want to rush into a response and look like a total Lunkhead like Jordy Verrill. Hahaha. Talk to you soon and keep up your amazing work!

Loved the ending of the movie when they pan in to the picture of the fourth of july party at the hotel in the roaring twenties and there is jack, in the center of it! The music playing and they all are living it up! My grandparents were in their twenties around that time and i think of them when i see this part! Its a beautiful hotel but given its past i dont think i would want to stay there, maybe see it, but not spend the night!! You guys were pretty brave going out on the edge of the mountains thru those cave tunnels!! Got the willys when you scanned how high it was !! Great video, well done!

You really did an amazing job tying the Ahwahnee to the Overlook. No way you could fit that sprawling facility into the Timberline Lodge (the hotel used for exterior shots).

Oh my goodness dude. When you panned your camera out around then down the overlook. Absolutely took my breath. Magnificent hotel also.

A few years ago I had the amazing opportunity of seeing the Ahwahnee hotel while I was at Yosemite. When I went in I felt almost a Deja vu.. now I know why! I didn’t know then that the hotel lobby was replicated for The Shining . It was spectacular! Great video!

Great fun. To check out the actual exterior of 'The Overlook Hotel', go to The Timberline Lodge in Oregon at the foot of Mount Hood. My buddy and I stayed there for a couple of nights when we climbed the mountain and were on the same corridor as Room 217, which is the haunted room in Stephen King's book.

Just found your site. We live about 20 minutes from Yosemite main gate. We have been up to this hotel and never made the connection to the Shining. We are going to visit Timberline lodge in the Fall. Great video, ty!

When he used the cricket bat instead of a axe,I lost interest in the remake.Or whatever it was I can't recall.I liked the actors but the lack of the ax kinda made me sad.

@@grimmlifecollective Well you said actual Overlook not the one used in Kubrick’s version, so yeah thought you meant the one in Colorado/The Stanley Hotel. I was on my work break and actually just forgot what the actual name was, and just noticed Shelley Duvall. Starting the video once I get home.

Wow, this video was awesome. I think it's my favorite of yours so far. Great locations, great camera work (as usual) and I loved the transition shots from the hotel to the movie clips. The quick cut of Jack at the beginning got me!

The elevators are awesome. I took a few pics in 2019 when I was there for a luncheon. Had them blown up to 48"x56" Its a great hallway wall picture. That whole valley is haunting and spooky. Lots of legends in that area. Great video as always. Be well.
