FYI - Queen bees do have stingers - Drones don’t, because they’re male. Any female bee, wasp or hornet can sting you if they’re threatened. The stinger is the females reproductive organ - The male has an aedeagus (basically a peepus) and not a stinger :) This hornet is most likely a Drone, to all those saying it’s probably a Queen. -random bee enthusiast

again, a lot of people seem to fail to understand that insects don't attack unprovoked, even the Asian Giant hornet. Sure, we provoke them at an ease that we may find unfair, but if you make sure to stay on its terms, keep to its comforts, you'll be fine. This guy probably just found one that didn't get wildly swung at by a human yet and that doesn't hail from a nearby hive. I know from experience that it may seem near impossible not to panic in the moment, but at least try not to manifest it by fighting back, as in its point of view, it didn't do anything to you and you're the one who started. If you really can't stand still and let it do its thing, which is understandable, just create distance. If it follows, it's not necessarily trying to sting you, it might think it miscalculated the distance and/or just really wants to land on you. But that thing's smart, so if you leave it alone and make as little sudden movements as possible while moving away, it'll eventually understand that you don't want it landing on you but aren't a threat. To avoid entering conflict with an animal, one must first enter the world of the animal, then understand and respect its views on its surroundings (including you) and its boundaries, whether territorial, distance between you two and how/how much you two interact. patience, understanding and critical thinking are key to a safe interaction with an animal. This includes knowing when, where and when, where not to interact with it in the first place. I'm not an expert, but here are my tips in conclusion: Look for signs of agitation. If it's stationary and on the ground, check its abdomen for vertical throbbing movement- this usually indicates stress, fear or aggravation, while a calm abdomen signals a calm insect. If it's flying, check its flight pattern- again, calm flight, calm insect; unpredictable, agitated flight, don't bother it. If it's walking, the faster it attempts to travel, the more certain you can be that something in its world isn't right. Give it meat! if it's going for your steak, wait until it gets off, then cut some of the meat off and put it to the far end of your plate, while eating your own part. It'll understand that you're sharing, that it will have its bite, but your meat is your meat. If its chunk is running low, add more. An Asian Giant hornet is smart enough to understand the gesture and be grateful for it.
