There is a Chinese Legend about the origin of silk where princess Xi Lingshi has a strand from the cocoon of a silk moth fall onto her cup of tea. The legend then says she observes the silk work spinning the cocoon and thus learned how to produce silk. An economic commodity that would lead to the creation of the silk road. Many sword and weapon designs have been directly based off of physical features of different animals. Honestly, the story of how humans domesticated the chicken is also a great indicator of how we were observing animals for innovations in the ancient world. We determined through the behaviors of the Indo Jungle Fowl, if we fed it bamboo seeds all the time they would constantly produce eggs. As indo jungle fowls breeding season is directly tied with the fall of bamboo seeds. So we fed them seeds all the time and they laid eggs all the time. Thus resulting in probably the most important domesticated animal in history except for bull. Sun Tzu himself talks about the strategy that is to be gained from watching the way animal behave in the wild. I could imagine a lot of the reason modern humans have lost touch with nature is because many of them don't gain any appreciation of it in the practical methodology of society. Animals don't contribute nearly as much now to new inventions, which leads modern humans to forget they needed that base perspective shift in the first place for true innovation. Nature has so much to teach humans, and will forever. Historically and categorically, the biggest factor of whether a society will discover an invention is whether or not an animal is around that does something similar through natural processes.
