I learnt MA because I felt socially insecure and want to maybe have more confidence by being physically stronger. As I get better in boxing I don't feel any more secure or confident. Boxing only taught me to be humble realising the world is so much bigger than me and no MA can protect me from its harm.

Interesting realization. However, I would think that fighting skills would at least give one at least a little more confidence and protection but up to a point of course.

This is why, in my own small experience, the combat sports seem to deliver a deep spiritual message where traditional MA (ironically) often fall short. "It challenges the paradigm that you are not the God that you should be worshipping."

I've seen many great fighters freeze when they've been confronted, you often here fight or flight but in reality, most people will freeze, it's something that needs to be addressed a lot more in training, everyone is obsessed with physical aspect of defence, but the psychology is a major game changer in my opinion, most of the time, it's going to be that single punch that a person will use, and not all there many techniques and tactics from hours of training, it's shocking how your mind goes blank when your attacked

The weakness that scares me is being useless when a loved one is in danger. The possibility of myself choosing selfishness rather than selflessness. If I chose to let them suffer at the hands of an attacker just so I can escape. If I myself alone was threatened I think I could make peace with me being "useless" and running away. But the idea of seeing a loved one threatened and not even trying to help, that's what's strikes me to the core. Let's hope that situation never happens but if it does I hope that the right instinct kicks in even if it means my life is forfeit for the sake of another

"And if men come unto me, I will show unto them their weakness - because if they humble themselves before me than I will make weak things become strong unto them" can be used as a metaphor for personal development. For it is only when we learn of our weaknesses and become humble, that we may consolidate them , grow, and become better. You may not be enough on your own, sometimes you may have to learn from books, teachers or others. Sometimes you may have to become a new you who carries that piece of past self who was not enough. P.S. I apologize if my quote was inaccurate, from my understanding that is quite rude

I'm barely at the introduction but I really want to say this: This person knows that even though they have trained in boxing, they are still outmatched by a group of thugs. That is admirable in my eyes; hotter heads would have let their ego overtake them. He could have ended up dead! But no, he let his ego slide and now he is alive. He is not weak or a loser. i have learned my lesson in an unexpected way. Not so much in a physical way (i've learned how i can get my butt kicked a while ago countless times during practice lol, ive been taught that humility a long time ago), but i am talking a complete psychological destruction. I wasn't respecting psychedelics as much as i should have, doing a magic mushroom trip once every month or more within a year. I didn't realize i was hitting it so hard, u don't need anything more than once a year tbh. About 16 trips in from small to heroic doses i thought i have cheated death, came to terms with it and nothing could bring me down. I got cocky and felt superior. I thought i learned all the lessons about many things in life. The next trip was to teach me the most important lesson of all, humility as u said. To make me realize how i had control over nothing.. how many things can make me their b*tch if the opportunity came. (Getting shot in war, wild animals, an armed attacked or a group, an airplane propeller crashing on my head out of nowhere haha), in all these instances there is little chance for me to survive. So i had 8 hours of pure psychological hell. A panic i have never ever felt in my life before, there was nothing physically threatening me, just whatever power wanted to teach me a lesson that day. I was crying for hours begging for it to stop, screaming, i thought i was dying or losing my sanity for ever. It felt like a thousand miles an hour. Where did my bravado and superiority go when i was forced to beg for mercy with my face on the ground? I was made to let it all go, submit and accept my weakness or lack of control. As soon as i fully accepted and submitted completely then i was let free, as a man that has learned his lesson. I guess that was truly my ego death experience as some people call it.

I got robbed 5 years ago by a man with a knife in Amsterdam in the night, I was really high (weed). He surprised me asking me what time was it and the moment I watch the time on my phone he pointed me his knife and asked me money. I ended up giving him the cash I got, it was luckily only 20 euros. While I had practiced martial arts since age 4 (judo, jujitsu, karate,...) I couldn't do anything and froze, and my huge mistake was to be high so my alertness was not there to detect the danger before it come. I felt shame for few years that I couldn't do anything... In the end it was only 20e but it hurt my pride. But then I got back to training and stopped doing any drugs to this day to always stay alert. The only drug I take is alcohol (beer) every 4-5 months for a night at my home... Thank you for your insight coach and sorry for this comment but I felt I needed to get it out my chest...

It's hard for one to come to terms with one's own weaknesses, but even observing weakness in others can be sobering. Especially the unexpected kind of weakness. When I was serving NS (compulsory military service for all guys in my country), I had a company mate who was "best trainee" in our company. He also had a great physique. Then one day, while chilling at the balcony, a beetle landed on his arm. He froze, and squirmed, "get it off ! get it off!" I went to him and said, "dude ! just shake your arm!" but he was still in panic mode and couldn't do anything, so I swatted his wrist (not directly on the beetle since I didn't want to squash it there), and the shockwave caused the beetle to fly off. Yeah, at that moment, I did feel a certain dark satisfaction at seeing such a "manly" guy panicking over a harmless insect on his arm, but it has also got me rethinking about what "strength" really means.

Sounds like this fellow was in one or more of what I'd call "no win situations". Situational Awareness -- being proactive in keeping alert to your environment (and the inhabitants of said environs) is the best way that I know to avoid those. Keep your heads up, eyes open & off the goddamned phones, try and never let yourself get enveloped/cornered. Y'all stay safe. Adversity breeds hardness, and weakness invites adversity... know your weaknesses, while playing to your strengths (yeah, paraphrasing Sun Tzu, sue me lol). Coach, loves this one, cause acknowledging personal 'weakness(es)', that was a hard lesson, for me.

Great talk, only if you are able to see you are weak and unprepared, you will find the possibility and motivation to work and growing up to strength, also learning the lesson of humbling oneself is priceless , even when you are growing stronger you never gonna crush weak person feelings because you remember you also start with the same state and feelings. Stronger is the man who is able to see his weakness and use it as tool to grow and develop skills, pride always gonna take you down because it is playing with your egocentric and negative mindset,to be humble no matter what you manage to achieve is always the right way haha somehow Coner against Habib came in mind as example of pride and self worship is making even great athletes to the cold ground and Habib in other hand never act as a jerk and always acting as humble and respectful person, so even when you are on the top of the game staying humble and respectful always gives you something, the other side always make you blind and deaf and rob you from the potential you have,Ali , Tyson the greatest falls victim of their pride and self worship.

There is something special about mma. That some people watch it for the sake of performance and others as if mma was filter of their own interests and that can be a little bit in everybody which is what we all have in common. We tend to favour our styles and sometimes it leaves some people off. Then there are all the accusations and violence, pretending to be right. The only difference would be that it would drag attention of the opposing sides even though they are looking at the same thing, some will be intrigued by all elements thus will remain feeling unfulfilled in terms of what else could there be. Other person will remain feeling fulfilled from the comfort of a comment section but there is different interest, same result. That is not to say that we need or don’t need either side but the complexity of our judging of things could be beyond imagination and that’s why we watch mma, we never like things being inaccessible, we want them to work within. The thing that would connect all the dots would be the outcome of a fight so then we can use that information in various ways... it can be driven or we would let off the steering wheel go.

"Respect is the currency for the feeble-minded". An interesting point. Not everybody would agree though. Speaking about religion - try telling this to Khabib and his friends from Dagestan. Respect over there is everything, a currency and a religion (well, the second religion after the obvious one). These guys are truly live and breathe respect - they don't easily give it, yet they actively demand it, and it's very easy to get in trouble by not showing enough of it to them. I knew a few such people when I was much younger. This worldview is prevalent in those regions of Caucasus, and there are many similar cultures like that around the world. Are they all feeble-minded? I'm not sure. But other than that, great words of wisdom and consolation, as always.

Hey Ramsey I'm a huge fan. I currently practice Wado-Ryu karate, Muay Thai, A more modernized Version of Wing Chun, Capoeira (Angola), Some Boxing and BJJ. I've been practicing BJJ on and off since I was 8, I'm 22 now, I don't really like it because of how it was marketed to me. When I was a kid and I wanted to get back into Karate at the time, BJJ was the hype and both the owner of the gym and my mom were kinda do BJJ I hope I'd didn't waste my time coming all the way over here to for now reason. So I did it, Competed in N.A.G.A. and got 2nd and third place doing Gi and No Gi for the first time. But I never really liked it. I can apply BJJ in a self defense scenario against someone who doesn't know it, but when it comes to sparring even back then and now my brain cuts off and all my technique and understanding positioning goes out the window. Any advice to fix this problem? If not thank you for your time. I also had some other questions such as: -Haymakers and other strikes, Do they have a high likelihood of knocking out or doing enough to stop someone who's tryna grapple? - Using Capoeira to Counter Strike in MMA - What system(s) Do you think would work best to compliment Tai Chi if a practioner wanted to get into MMA ? -What are some thoughts you have on Modern Day Traditional Karate/Taekwondo Schools, What can they do to improve as systems and be used more effectively in MMA sport fighting and self-defense? - How to be the non counter striker in the ring/sparring (The Guy who throws the first punch and possibly leads the fight), as I'm naturally more of a counter striker ? -Pivoting (like a boxer or Thai fighter) using the force from the ground without lifting your heel(like a lot of traditional kung fu) to perform a hook. Is that bad for the knees and the joints? -Negativa In The Cage? Could it work? I appreciate you taking the time to read this and I apologize for making the list super long, I wanted to make it interesting in hopes you could cover it in a video on your channel and see what you have to say. I also plan on taking a trip with a friend(s) out to your school some time to train out there.

I found out my limitations very fast, I wrestle at 106, but since there are no partners around my size I have to wrestle the 150s and 170s, I am not even able to execute double legs properly when we are just doing drills, the weight and strength is too apparent. It brings me down quite a bit because if I can't take down an opponent who is cooperative, what could I do against somebody if they actually attacked me? I just feel very weak and i have a heavy dislike for this feeling, and I feel like I'm training for nothing even if I know That is not entirely the case. I'm not sure if I should just accept this or try to gain weight, which is very hard for me. Sorry to sit in here and complain

If you train with people who are more skilled than you, or in a discipline which you have not practiced, or someone who is bigger/stronger than you are or even just someone who is having a good day while you are having a bad day then doing badly and looking weak is going to happen. The best thing to do is keep training with these people and see how much you improve over time.

Is it simply malnutrition ? Or is it something else (Thyroid problem, parasitic infestation ..etc). I would recommend that you see a doctor first and he will request for the necessary investigations. If everything turns out to be OK, then your next step should be visiting a dietician/nutritionest and he will put you on a proper diet. Good luck. 👍

Its funny that I would feel the same way and have felt that way for years. I've been abused by my mother, left by my father, bullied trough out my childhood and early teens. Been beat up, been humiliated, been laughed at. I decided to fight back and almost died when they left be unconscious on the street on a cold October morning when it was -13 C and I was lying on the ground for 45mins. Started doing combat sports and was also injured because most men have egos and can't have a newbie get hits on a dude that trained for 11 years... So yeah Ik how this dude feels, I've been mugged only 2 times in my life so Ik how that feels too. Now in my early 20's I'm doing psychology, philosophy, mma, hitting the gym and trying to become the best me I can and fix all my flaws. And let me tell you now at 6.4, 9% body fat, deep voice, (I have a patchy beard tho), know how to defend myself and not taking anyone's sxit I feel that I have a long way to go because now since I see myself as a man the memories of the past haunt me and I wish I could meet those people now and tear them apart. I like your channel Ramsey and I like you as a person because you are wise and smart but I disagree with some point in this video. To be a true man you have to be dominant, smart, command respect, be good looking and have status, you can't let your emotions control you and you have to have skills to succeed in life and be on top. Weakness cause pain and pain cause trauma, trauma ruins your life and you fall into addiction, trust me on that. Don't be weak goes to anyone reading this.

Hey coach Dewey. I have probably quite a long question but alot of it is just background or filler so if u get around to answering my question I would probably suggest you cut alot of it out. So my name is Igor and I was born in England but in 2018 I moved to India (I am a quarter Indian). I have always enjoyed fighting despite how bad I was at it and so when I came to India I decided to learn to fight for real in hopes of finding some friends and gaining some skill. I had a false start with a mcdojo but now long story short I am doing taekwondo and MMA and my focus is mma as I enjoy it immensely and wish to make a career of teaching or atleast a side job. In my MMA gym we don't go very hard and I understand that going slow helps learn technique and avoid injuries however I feel that I need to do things a bit if you will rougher because after all MMA is not gentle. I am 16 and in February 2021 I will be 17 and I try hard to be humble and to have no ego, I am ok with lossing and not winning or not being better than some one as I understand that it's all part of learning however I often still find myself upset and feeling down after not being amazing in sparing. I have typed alot in this question and still haven't given you my question so I'll get down to it (sorry for the long comment brother). Will I be ok just drilling technique and not practicing with a degree of rough and tough?(in India it seems that in general people arnt really rough/violent.) And how much is a good amount to improve in 3 months and how little improvement warrants a change?

Yo Ramsey, can you do some more of these philosophical videos where you discuss Mormon scripture? I've only ever seen caricatures of Mormons that paint them as stupid ... it's interesting to see the other side and listen to some of the values in a context I understand (martial arts).
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting idea. There is a huge amount of warfare documented in the Book of Mormon. It’s largely a narrative about two constantly warring nations that eventually destroy each other. And inside that narrative is a shorter meta-narrative about a much older civilization that met the same exact fate. When I first read it, I thought “for a book of scripture, there sure is A LOT of fighting.” Meanwhile, most of the more spiritual “sermon” type of passages happen during these chaotic times, often as a result of the violence. There is a ton of stuff that speaks to me as martial artist there.
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 жыл бұрын
For example, the co text of the verse I quoted in this video: an ancient prophet named Ether had just witnessed every man woman and child from his entire civilization destroyed in a catastrophic civil war, after spending many years preaching to them to turn from their wicked ways. So we hear this guy lamenting the loss of the his whole world as he understood it, writing with the hope that anyone from a future generation could learn not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

@@RamseyDewey That's pretty interesting. That's the kind of thing that would basically grab my interest. I think there's a large audience of martial artists who don't really connect with normal religion that would be open to hearing things from a perspective they intimately understand and pursue (martial arts, war theory, etc). In theory, Shaolin Monks could make in-roads into this area since they combine philosophy, religion, and martial arts together ... but every time I've tried to listen to Shaolin teachings, the presenter seemed very hamstrung by the language barrier and could only explain the most basic of ideas. For instance check out the video "Shi Yan Yin: The Philosophy of Shaolin" ... it's hard to connect to that as a fluent English speaker because it seems like just surface-level basic stuff.

Hi Ramsey, I have a question for you I’m 21 6’4” 180lb and my problem is that I’m too skinny... I’m training in MMA for a long time, and in the last year or two I’m also doing strength and gym training. Even tho I’m very consistent, I barely gain any weight, and my muscle dosent seems to grow much, I’m assuming that I’m burning a lot of calories in my MMA training, and it’s may decrease the possibility of muscle growth... I don’t want to ever stop my MMA training, but I also want to get bigger, I’m not happy with how my body looks and where my strength level is at, and it’s taking away from my confidence. But I’m not sure what should I do next, I’m even considering having a steroids cycle just to have a little boost, something I never thought I would even consider but I’m getting a little desperate. what do you think ?

You need to eat a lot more than you think you do to gain muscle. Even if you were taking steroids, you would still need to radically increase your caloric intake to gain weight. Eating for gains is basically a part time job. You need to develop a strict eating schedule and stick to it.

The person that you should fear most in this world is yourself! Your wits saved you today, easily. But let's turn this around. Let's say you get "inspired". I'll give you the "inspiration", go watch the movie Death Wish, the original one. Who's going to save them, from you? The best TV series I've ever watched is Highlander: the TV series. EVERYTHING the villains say is what I say in my head, but I am afraid to say out loud. The first fear is other people will hear it. But now I learn that the second fear is that I will hear it. That is the kind of terror that haunts me forever. I watched Star Trek as a kid. 35 years later, I still remember a line: Star Trek: Return to Tomorrow. They taught basic bjj stuff and I found myself easily throwing people around because of my size. Think of a 5'10 strongman sorta build but I understand strength will only take you so far and I gassed out quick. How can I better prepare myself conditioning wise in a short period of time? I only have access to these bjj classes 2 times a week for 8 weeks before the fight and no other bjj classes near me. There's muay Thai classes at my gym that I could take. Would that be beneficial enough? What other things can I do?

Coach Dewey, what do you mean when you say that religion is your actions and your beliefs, and not a deity or church? Does that mean the deity/church doesn't matter? And isn't the point of religion to believe in a power greater than you, to explain our world?
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey Жыл бұрын
I did not say the deity does not matter. I paraphrased James, the apostle of Jesus Christ when he wrote “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to take care of the fatherless and the widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unspotted from the world”. It’s also a paraphrasal of the apostle Paul when he wrote in 1 Corinthians 13:2 “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.” The so called religion that happens in our minds isn’t a religion at all. The pure religion of action, a pragmatic demonstration of our love for God and for our fellow man through our actions, on the other hand, is a fullfillment of the two great commandments that Jesus gave.

*Hi, coach I have a question* I am 17 and I would like to improve my wrestling specifically for MMA. I want to focus on wrestling because as you'll know almost all the fighters that could be considered the goat can attribute a great ammount of their success to wrestling, whether it be offensively or defensively. And the greatest fighters ever (GSP and Khabib) are very wrestling focused. I live in the UK so I am currently limited to wrestling schools and good competition, however there is a wrestling school near me that I intend on going to. What I am asking is how does someone who does not have an extensive background in wrestling, who doesn't live in a wrestling heavy region, and is starting wrestling somewhat late, develop top level MMA wrestling? Such as GSP. Bare in mind I'm more than willing to move countries and take other big steps in the future, in pursuit of this goal. Thanks, Ramsey. Have a good day.

Consistent hard work. That’s how. GSP started wrestling well after he had already started fighting professionally. He’s from Canada, where wrestling isn’t super commonplace. GSP went out of his way to find wrestling trainers as an adult and he put in the work. Sounds like a perfect role model for you. Too many people assume that if they didn’t wrestle in high school or college that they’re doomed and they’ll never learn. No. Just get on the mat and do the work.

To the fellow who wrote in the question and everyone else who experiences the same dilemma of feeling bad for not standing their ground and fighting... Unfortunately, there has not yet been an unarmed self-defence/combat/martial art (whatever you want to call it) system that: 1. Can reasonably defend against multiple attackers -- other than being a fast runner 2. Can use clairvoyance to know with certainty that the attacker is not armed. 3. That can guarantee that you know more than the attacker and the outcome will be on your side. 4. Take away all nervousness, fear and self-doubt in the face of danger. 5. Summon "the force", the powers of Grayskull, give you Spidey senses and an invisible shield. 6. Can replicate in real life how it works in movies. 7. Replace the fragility of your life and health. It's proved (historically) that they had to march from 30 to 36 km every day under the bag which weighted 20-50 kg (not including the weight of the armature and weapons). So I've got a number of questions: 1) how is that possible to be SO strong? 2) is it possible to be that strong without serious damage to health in a long distance? 3) where is the limit between becoming so strong and becoming a wrecked disable person (due to the excessive amount of physical activity like that)? Thanks a lot!

In Orthodox Christianity, it's a bit different. Jesus is supposed to measure the internal strength of everyone and gives that person "the cross" appropriate for a person's strength. It is assumed that god never gives the cross which is beyond someone's potential capability. so if someone is rich or has a naturally strong body, that implies that god considers this person weak and gives him a light cross. but the harder is someone's life, which means the more strength god believes that a person has, so he grants that person a bigger cross to carry. and the bigger cross someone carries through life, the bigger reward that person is supposed to get. (the worst sin that god never can forgive is when a person refuses to carry his cross by performing suicide.) there is also the next level. if a person feels really strong, he can share someone's cross. but that's a whole different story. so in contrast to Protestantism, in Orthodox Christianity, if a person suffers, that's supposed to be a sign of exceptional love of god to the person. and if a person is rich and healthy, that means god abandoned that person.
