“For a New Yorker, anything is possible.”
The Gilded Age begins in 1882 with young Marian Brook (Jacobson) moving from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after the death of her father to live with her thoroughly old money aunts Agnes van Rhijn (Baranski) and Ada Brook (Nixon). Exposed to a world on the brink of the modern age, will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?
The Gilded Age debuts Monday January 24 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

@@bellareid3488 And isn't it just IRONIC with SJP? Kim and Cynthia went on to pursue other projects, roles and even politics (Nixon) while the other two SJP and KD pretty much either did bit parts or reprisals? Despite the fanbase pearl clutching and insult hurling, Kim made the SMART choice of bowing out and moving on from Samantha. She got to do more and be more. Hopefully, Cynthia is following Kim's lead. This "reboot nouveau" phase isn't a good thing. It's simply a nostalgia redefined cash grab.

I love that this show sows characters in all kind of positions. Downton Abbey was so popular because the characters downstairs were equally as, if not more, interesting than the ones upstairs. A show that portrays all dynamics of people in an older period is always interesting.

To see Julian honestly portray American history, with including the very real black elite, is truly a breath of fresh air. In the US, a certain political demographic and our education system, like to portray Black American history with the same brush of perpetuate stereotypes.

Look, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. The black elite would not have been accepted or even acknowledged by broader American society at the time. I like these kinds of dramas where it’s not so dramatical, people are subtle, not too much drama, infidelity, backstabbing, murdering, yelling, screaming, or fighting. That’s why I liked Downton Abbey, it was dramatic but I also felt comfortable watching it. I’m not sure The Gilded Age will turn out because it’s dealing with the problems of Americans, this coming from an US citizen. This is why I like British tv shows more than American tv shows.

Fabulous idea. But, of course, the "go to" is always New York when similar things were going on in Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh or Cleveland. One of the best things about Titanic was how the major characters, though fictional, were not from NY. The richest person in America in 1912 was George Widener, who died on the Titanic. I thought the younger woman in the beginning looked familiar. She kind of looked like Meryl Steep's daughters. Googled a bit and that is her daughter. It's her youngest daughter. She goes by Louisa Jacobson, not Gummer like her older sisters.

@@koleyw932 when her purse is stolen I had to go back and sure enough the bystander took it and wrapped his paper around it and calmly walked away. The two brawlers were the diversion. This show is Brilliant, HBO never failed to deliver excellent shows by quality - not quantity ( sorry Netflix ). Just early this year, HBO already have excellent shows like this, Raised by the Wolves season 2 and the upcoming House of the dragon.

When I saw this, I decided to give it a watch. I'm glad I did. The story line, the characters and actors and actress are amazing! The whole thing comes together nicely! But it's going to be a long while before we see the next season! 😢 It's from what I've read won't be out until the middle of 2025

I can't remember the last time a series actually focused on American life in the 19th century as opposed to hypermasculine western/ cowboy stereotypes. I'm glad that a show has finally been made about the golden age as it's a period that deserves more attention.
