Marion did NOT figure out Tom Rakes before he stood her up when they were supposed to elope. He had chosen a wealthy woman over her and didn’t have the courage to tell her face to face. I really wish he was coming back for season 2 and that the story line was that he lost all his wife’s money and fell on his face while Marion finds true love with a wonderful person. 😂

I love that Agnes and Ada are always dressed in the three primary colors whereas Bertha wears secondary, tertiary, and metallics. To me, this is a fairly obvious visual representation of old vs new money. The Van Reins are a long established wealthy family while the Russels are viewed as social climbers. It's not always period accurate but it is consistent in the first season and it's fun to see that this detail is being carried over into the second.

@@fabulouswomeninhistory I really do appreciate the work in both visual storytelling and representation that this show is doing, in costuming, set design, and characterization. Everything about this series is so well developed there is no stone left unturned. I think my favorite part of it is Mrs. Scott, played in a phenomenally restrained yet powerful performance by the incomparable Audra McDonald. Every time she appears on screen I find myself holding my breath waiting for what she might say or do next, but with such dignified subtlety that you have no choice but to applaud whatever she's doing.
@jesseleeward2359

I also feel like Agnes was written to be more of an old fuddy duddy like her sister, but Christine Baranski was determined to give her more flair. But I like Ada's toned down old curmudgeon character. It's how I would imagine people from that background in that era.

Here's a bit of trivia: Caroline Astor and Alva Vanderbilt Belmont had a 23 year age difference with Alva being the younger (b.1830 vs. b 1853) Christine Baranski and Carrie Coon have a 29 year old age difference with Carrie being the younger (b. 1952 vs. b. 1981) I am (always) amazed, every time I watch this series; at the depth of research that the creators, the set designers, costume department and even the make-up department have done. Regarding the make-up, the actors/actresses look far better in TGA than the characters they play would have looked in real life (except for, perhaps, the real Consuelo Vanderbilt, who was a noted beauty of her era)

I have to admit it. I love Bertha Russell. She is so ruthless and downright determined to sock it to the old money people. I am sad that she is so willing to use her daughter in the game, so to speak. That part is a little hard to take. I am not surprised that season 2 will focus more on that since the dollar princess phenomenon was a thing and so many young women were exploited by their mothers - can we say Chris Jenner? Still, I love the show and cant wait till it starts up again. Hey thanks for the info you put together here!

I think she is the most fascinating of the characters. Oddly the show bills itself and revolving arouind Marian's character. They literally buried the lead on that one. Bertha is the one that drives the drama!

@ MunchForWellness The momster couldn't hold a candle to Alva V. when it comes to self-promotion! The big differences between them are that Alva was cultured and she had genuine philanthropic interests/ projects. Consuelo was not in the first wave of Dollar princesses. Many well-to-do Americans believed that marrying a nobleman with a hereditary estate (especially within the British royals and nobles) was a "safe" arrangement for their daughters. It is ironic that the parents of these women would have been scandalized if someone had suggested that they were selling their daughters as their very recent ancestors had been selling slaves! However, arranged marriages had been the norm up until the Industrial Revolution for most couples. There had been (even among the working classes) marriage contracts of some sort (some made verbally in front of witnesses, if the parties were not educated) The goal, far from being greedy was to make sure that the young couple had enough assets to raise the (inevitable) family resulting from the marriage.

Strange that you describe Marion as being “featured more” in this season as if she were just a minor character who wasn’t seen that much in season 1. 🙄 She’s really the MAIN character who was not only the introduction to the show, but her character serves as the outside observer of the old money and new money families and bridges the gap between the two as she associates with both.

Hey, thanks for adding to the conversation. I think by more, I mean better (hopefully). I personally think that the Marion character is the least interestig in the show. Yes, the writer and show runners use Marion as a bridge and that was their intention but I don't think anyone finds her more useful that just that. Can't deny the drama that Bertha Russel's character brings to the show!

@@fabulouswomeninhistory Yes. She is insipid. Or perhaps it is the actress who brings no nuance to her character. I am bored when she is on screen. I liked best the romance between Bertha and George, but at the end of season 1 the stupid writers seemed determined to ruin that.

Actually, it was Tom Raikes who dumped Marian Brooks, even though he did love her. He just loved money more. The series never established that Dorothy Scott was an ex-slave. It did establish that Mr. Scott was one. And you didn't mention the issue of Peggy Scott's missing child. If Peggy does become involved with T. Thomas Fortune, then it will be changing history, since he had already married someone else back in 1878, five years before Season 2. Also, Robert Sean Leonard had a brief role in 1993's "The Age of Innocence".

In a way the series embodies Edith Wharton since so much of what we know of the inner workings of elite societ of the time comes from her works. Not just the history, but her interpretation of women's experience in that time and place. It would be nice though if they give a nod to her directly.

the very beginnings of New York City's CHINATOWN began exactly as the advent of The Gilded Age in 1870s came to be. It would add an interesting historical fact to the series. This was the time of intense Anti-Chinese violent attacks out West when the Chinese Railroad workers were no longer Useful when the Transcontinental Railroad was completed. So these men migrated to New York City for new job opportunities. A man by the name of Ah Ken or Kam is credited as being the first Chinese to reside where NYC Chinatown is now. He owned a successful tobacco shop.

I’m surprised that Tom Raikes is not in season 2 because I think he stole all of Marion’s inheritance and lied to her that there was none. That’s why he didn’t care that she had no money because he had all of it. Also he told Marion because of a recent change in his circumstances he was able to come to New York.
