It's been 2 years in the making and Season 2 of the Gilded Age takes us deep into the heart of New York City's dramatic conflict Known as The War of the Operas, which, by the way, really "is" based upon true historical events.
Upon the Metropolitan Opera’s opening in 1883, the Academy of Music found itself sadly unable to compete with its limited box capacity. Here's the full story......

Living in England, we are constantly told that the US does not have a class system. The Gilded Age proves that there is indeed a class system, but it is based on money and status. It's also a very entertaining drama.

Don't leave out culture. The US especially NY is founded on and promotes the arts and culture. Not just money, status and politics. So are the class systems in the UK and other European countries which is where the US's class systems come from --- just better. LOL! Wink wink...

The elite in the USA is an extension of that of the UK. The same families stay in power, no revolution has altered the status quo. In the West, The French Revolution came closest. The aristocracy occasionally marries the acting elite, an industry which is also largely dominated by nepotism but allows for new genes.

The war of the opera houses is referenced in the novel THE ALIENIST with a suspenseful moment when the leading characters have to slip out undetected for the ultimate confrontation with the killer.

@@fabulouswomeninhistory According to a CPI based calculator $15k in 1883 comes out to $483,000 and change in 2022. That sounds about right to me. Prior to 1933 for most of American history the dollar was backed by either gold or silver thus limiting the amount of money that could circulate. During this time inflation was more or less nonexistent except for the brief periods when the US temporarily suspended silver/gold redemption and printed paper money. That happened twice, first during the Civil War and later during our involvement in the First World War. Both of those periods saw sharp inflation. In 1933 during the worst days of the Great Depression FDR abolished the gold standard. Beginning in World War II and continuing to the present day, the US has experienced varying levels of inflation which most people have come to just accept as part of life. But for most of our history there was a deep fear of inflation and a loathing of the all-too-common practice of bankrupt Europeans nations debasing their money to pay off debt. JP Morgan once observed; "gold is money. Everything else is credit."

Tomorrow is my birthday and THIS is going to be my greatest present! Raised on San Francisco Opera, been to the Met, both my wife and I are screaming for joy at the "dress derby" continuing and the War of the Operas. I think my favorite time at an opera wa when we went to see Nixon in China at SF, there was NOBODY else in our box that night, which was on the end, so we moved all the other chairs out of the way, took our heels off and sat on the floor of the box noshing on champagne and intermission food. While that opera is not the greatest, the spectacle of a Boeing 747 jet taxiing onto an opera stage is pretty damn great. But then you go mess it all up by going to the NY Met where Aida had live horses, camels etc. Plus opera is a "bonus" art -- there are often ballet numbers performed in the middle of operas, but never opera numbers in a ballet, so it's more bang for your buck!

Hi Mary Thomson in palm springs, Interesting info here and fun to hear from someone who actually goes to the opera. If I remember right there is a scene in season 1 where Agnes says she hates opera but she says in an Agnes quip qhich I can't recall right now. THanks for joining the conversation.

Wow. Like your new format. Makes for an interesting watch. I did a little research myself and the opera houses used to be located in the bowery and the rich folks had to pass by the likes of the poor to get to their fancy night out. I think there was even a riot at one of the opera houses and that is why the new rich put the met further uptown away from the sordid masses. One thing this show doesn't seem to touch on is the wealth inequality of the times. I think we are in another gilded age for the same reason - huge disparity between the haves and havenots. I am not sure the downton abbey did much of this either. Sure they show the downstairs people but there is never a moral tone in either show that would make a viewer think that the rich ever had any kind of guilty conscience for having so much when others around them have so little. Still, I enjoy the show even if it is an American production. I generally like British TV more than American TV but am giving this more of a chance since it is by a Brit. Good video. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for adding to the conversation. There really was more I could have put in about the history of opera in the 19th century but it woiuld have made the video too long and people don't really watch really long videos. I found the war of the opera houses interesting and that's why I am looking forward to season 2 along with all the other new plots lines I mentioned in my other season 2 video. It had a hard time competing with the met and stopped opera soon after the met opened. Then it began to offer vaudeville and politacal rallies. It was demolished in 1926 for the construction of the Consolidated Edison Company Building. Thanks for joining the conversation!

@@fabulouswomeninhistory I spent the morning doing some sleuthing about these old opera houses. The Academy of Music was run by men who were only interested in getting the most rent out of the building. There was never a "house" opera company, they just relied on rentals from touring companies. The Met was set up from the beginning with a better business model.
