Civil rights attorney here- some of the things you’ve identified as severe problems with the legal system in America is largely why those of us in the social justice space refer to the system as the “Criminal LEGAL System” as opposed to Criminal Justice System. The reality is, there’s not much actual justice with the systems we currently have in place (e.g., placing someone in solitary confinement/the hole when they’ve expressed suicidal ideation). Changing the terminology we use in everyday conversations like this podcast is a small way we can all do our part to fight back and change the system. Also, you should definitely take the baby bar! 🎉You have great insight already. We need more Black women in all aspects of the law!

Yes! I also think the love for Sex & the city is based on how old you were when the original series aired. As a single college graduate, I related to at least one of the characters. Love the series and used to relate everything back to an episode.

So black folks do watch SATC. My older sister was a fan when it first aired. And when I got grown, I binged it too. It’s an experience so I definitely say watch Melissa. Hmm and like most 90s/early 2000s shows, the first season isn’t good. But you have to watch it in order to understand the series. Power through season one and it gets better.

The last dialogue about purpose of punishment from Mel around the 1:05:00 mark is spot on! I've asked questions to people about punishment and the reason why we use jails and prisons. Example is Mike Vick. "We" love our animals. Legally, animals are property. Vick didn't receive life for his crimes. He paid his debt to society. He also paid restitution after as well. He educated himself about his crimes and came out a better person and man. He was still ostracized and judged. The purpose of jail and punishment is to rehabilitate. Recidivism is high because jails DO NOT rehab criminals humanely. They relapse and the jail becomes a carousel. Vick stayed out of trouble and out of jail and has held a job ever since. Many Americans still think he shouldn't be able to. We only want humane conditions, light sentences, reduced fines and overturned convictions when we are personally hurt by the results. Everyone becomes an authoritarian when no one is looking.

I watched the original Sex & the City, it was enjoyable back in the day but as you get older you realize all the characters were trash!!!! I watched "Unlocked, the experiment", it showed how some of the inmates will always be institutionalized!!! It was good to see some of the inmates grow & learn from the experience.
