Had one of these in NZ back in the 70s (13 years old), all we did was turn a regular bike frame upside down, turn the forks upside down in the head tube and make an extension for the seat on the bottom bracket which was now at the top, and extended handlebars. The teacher banned us from riding it to school. (May have had to turn the crank over??)

Holy Cow, Paul! That takes me back. When I was a kid in Boy Scouts, a couple of built what I "think" we called a High Bike. Plans were either in Boy's Life magazine, or possibly Popular Mechanics, I can't remember now. Take our bicycles, pull the wheels off, take the fork out of the frame, and remove the crank. We'd flip the frame upside down, put the crank back in it opposite where it was, stick the fork back in it upside down from where it was, put the wheels back on it. Then we'd take a couple lengths of galvanized pipe and make a new seat perch, high as we could reach the pedals, and then another piece of galvanized pipe and bend it in a gentle "S" curve and poke that down into the neck of the fork, and tighten it up. Stick a seat on top of the perch, climb up on whatever was tall enough for us to get on it and get it going, and ride them all over the place. Stopping without serious injury was always an adventure. Tat "S" curve in the pipe in the forks neck let us steer it somewhat. I'm surprised I've lived as long as I have with all that crazy stuff we pulled back in those days!

I remember seeing those bikes in Mechanix Illustrated around 1961 or 62. They were quite a thing for a while. I even remember one made out of an iron bed frame.

That's a Great story, thanks. I didn't realize Popular Mechanics had the plans to make them. We got Popular Science, I think, and never saw it, or else my memory has faded. It was a great era. Imagine magazines with that kind of info nowadays... No Way!!

When I was a kid I acquired one of those Schwinn sprockets with the heart shaped cutouts from somewhere. I always thought it was neat, I ended up using it on bike I built from bits and pieces.

we used to take two bike frames and weld them together one on top of the other and put the pedals on the top bike and run a really long tube down to the forks and to the handle bars. then find something tall enough to climb onto get to get on it,. you definitely didn't want to fall off, That was our Giraffe Bike's.

That's only a baby giraffe. I was working at the local bike shop in 1976, the year of the US Bicentennial, and for the 4th of July parade I built three bikes. One was an adult giraffe, I just welded two frames one on top of the other (as I recall, they were "english racer" frames so 26" wheels originally). I used the top bottom bracket for the cranks, built it out with 20" wheels. It was very stable, you'd push off to get just a little speed, climb it like a ladder to get on, and off you'd go. Now I wonder what ever happened to that thing?

Paul, are you sure you are going to need a hub shell of 100mm? And not a hub-assembly (including axle, locknuts, bearings) to be 100mm O.L.D.? I don't know the spacing of that fork, obviously, but I'm thinking it a fairly quickly made calculating error.

Arjan you are correct. The hub shell is 95mm, so the spacers at either end bring the total to 100mm. I don't always get everything correct in the midst of filming a video, so thanks for your Eagle Eye!!

I'm 5'8" and I have a hard time getting in and out of a 1928 model A roadster , Henry Ford was thin as a rail but he was close to 6 foot , I don't know how someone that tall could even drive that car , all of the model a's where like that , I think your right about the average size of people back then , maybe the stock market crash stunted their growth? 😅

I've had that very book since about '82, not as well thumbed as your copy. I think the extra height of the giraffe bike may have been to keep the rider farther from the filthy streets and roads of the era 💩
