Literally just past midnight now and his intro transported me into a cozy world of fantasy and dreams, I love this so much, sometimes I ask myself if God will allow me to live in a 90s anime for a while in Heaven

Never thought of Ah my Goddess as another Urusei Yatsura until you pointed out lmao
@jasonblalock4429Ай бұрын
Yeah. Oh My Goddess' main twist makes it really stand out: What if the main couple were *genuinely* in love? It's a little surprising just how rarely that happens in romcoms. And that makes it unlike all the Urusei Yatsura and/or Tenchi Muyo clones out there.
@mafeukАй бұрын
Does that make Tsugumomo the Yatsura of the 2010s?

Like most people who got into anime in the late 90s-early 2000s, Production IG was a mark of quality for me. It is interesting to see their beginnings Pre-Ghost in the Shell. Even if their stuff was a dubious quality in the story department (see the entire Blood the Last Vampire franchise) they were always top notch in the visuals and production quality. But I don't really watch modern anime, so I have no idea what they are up to now.

You know what I think that’s why I do like looking into what has been forgotten in things in general just to see them in and how much of their time it is. It’s more fun to find gold than just given it

Wait a minute. So an anime actually took the "world inside a rug" concept from Clive Barker's novel Weaveworld and put it into an anime? I'm surprised by this obscure use of it.

Will we ever run out of anime to review? By 2017 they were 35,000 anime in existence.

The fact that you’ll be covering Production I.G.‘s OVA’s, shows, and films down the road has caught my attention. As for this pilot film/OVA, it is forgettable, but like you said, it’s an interesting detour for the studio before eventually aspiring to greener pastures.

I remember watching this back in the day as one of my first anime. There was a promo for it on Devil Hunter Yohko, and my local Blockbuster had a copy. So, why not? One of the things I noticed was that a number of the jokes made no sense... in English. I then rewatched some of the scenes and just listened to the Japanese dialog. I didn't understand a word of it, but I could hear that parts sounded similar. "Ah ha! It's a pun!" I later would wish that ADV would have translator notes like AnimEgo.
@fattiger6957Ай бұрын
Urusei Yatsura was incredibly popular in the 80s. I guess it makes sense that it would have spawned a bunch of copycats. There's Outlanders, which is just Urusei Yatsura with way more violence and sex. Heck, you could see a lot of Urusei Yatsura in Tenchi and much of the harem series that were popular throughout the 90s and 2000s.

A new Kyoto Video video! Always make me smile when they drop :) I was a kid in the 90s, when anime was spreading over the West and I was bummed out by the scarcity of information and availability of things to watch. Your channel makes me so happy because I get to relive my nerdy childhood, despite not seeing or even knowing of the existence of 90% of anime you are presenting. Thanks for keeping the flame alive for these often semi-forgotten treasures! I cross my fingers for a day when you review Ruin Explorers. It's a very mediocre OVA (objectively speaking) but it is a source of so many warm memories for me.
@UngantorАй бұрын
This feels like the kind of thing that would be remembered as a cult classic, if only it had a more memorable theme song... Like, everything it is referancing would have been obscure in the west during the 90s, and there was probably like five people out there who loved it, you know?...
@ShanaReviewsАй бұрын
You're teasing me with the Ah My Goddess mentions lol looking forward to when you tackle the 90s OVAs and maybe even the movie when you get to them but honestly, I never thought of the series as a take on Urusei Yatsura since it was more in line with being Bewitched which predates Urusei Yatsura (Bewitched not AMG) and I believe was either confirmed or at least compared to that more.
@leeratner8064Ай бұрын
You should do Marmalade Boy one day if possible or at least part of it. During mid to late 1990s anime fandom in the West, when I was in high school, a lot of American fans got confused about how straight laced a lot of teen dramas in anime could be compared to American/Western teen dramas. Ataru type characters sort of resonated more because they at least seem interested in sex and were more like the male characters in teen comedies.

Wasn’t that the one where it was a forbidden romance because they were siblings through their parents’ marriage? And then later turned out they were actually biologically related too?

Wow, Katsuyuki Sumisawa just happens to be coming up in a lot of YT videos about old Anime lately, I also just wrote about him on my Blog earlier this month. TO me his most notable work is his Sailor Moon work. I don't think something that's as much of a direct Manga Adaptation as this really serves well though, his talent is in Anime Original episodes and arcs.

I tend to watch the show/OVA covered before the actual video to make my own impression (and to help me decide which OVAs to watch next), but in this case, I mostly agree with the points brought up in the video. I had fun watching the OVA, but I have to admit that it's quite lazily written and really similar to UY. The jokes and production were decent, though.

Anyway i plan to watch Urusei Yatsura at some point so this one-episode derivate might be a nice little test run.
