I remember I heard this song first watching Cavalry Trilogy by John Ford starring John Wayne, later discovering it's considered also a Civil War song but dating back even earlier as a soldier sing along song. Anyways the melody is very catchy and for me has that vintage vibe I guess because of the movies. For this tune I was curious how low I can get with the tuning and still make it work with normal strings; this is in open E (like your standard G but 3 semitones lower), so like the longneck banjo. The strings are kinda loose but the 12' rim still gives it nice and bassy tone.

Very nice! Did you replace the tuners or are they adjustable? My only hesitation to getting the CC12 is the way the tuners are to the side, rather than back. Otherwise seems well worth the price.

Thanks! I did replace them. I knew it from the start when getting that banjo that I'd do so. The tuners it came with were very good in terms of friction, stability etc. I just couldn't get over the look. The new ones are Gotoh I think. Anyways even with the tuners swap I'd say it's still awesome and well priced banjo. Hope this helps!

Beautiful playing! I recently got the CC-Carlin partly because of your videos. Thank you for the beautiful music. I’m new to banjo and just curious, what are those circular things under your bridge?

Hey, thanks! :-) I hope you're enjoying your new banjo! This funny looking thing is a K&K passive pickup mounted under the head of the banjo. I guess it's not so visible on regular, white heads but with this transparent one it stands out

Thanks! :-) yes, I definately recommend it. In that price range I was expecting less than what I got and I'd say the sound and quality is comperable to much more expensive banjos. And it's versatile too

These are still factory strings that come with this Gold Tone banjo, don't know the brand but these are apparently 11 gauge rather than more usual 10s

This was originally a colonial period song was it not? Also had lyrics? Perhaps a Mandela Effect but could've sworn.....

Oh yeah, an old song definately, I'm guessing 1700s could be true. I'm no expert on the history of it though. Has lyrics for sure 👍
