Once again, you shed light on important local history with an empathy, compassion and a true understanding for the lives of these poor forgotten souls. I find it hard to comprehend how their memorials could be so callously cast away like that, surely it can only be described as desecration?!!! and this is the charge that should be laid at the feet of those responsible!.

Having worked for the Hitmans until 2006, it was a shock to hear that Harry had passed away! I've just been down to the cemetery with flowers for him, and also for Gerald's step-daughter Joanne who is buried alongside them but was not mentioned in the video. Rest in peace Gerald, Harry, Joanne and all others who lie there 💔

The instutions were not kind or happy places for many. Having all residents under the various mental health acts they had no rights of their own. The moral defectives in this story are the villagers, the Church and property developers. The institutions themselves became a big problem, as it was not the residents who were always the focus of concern or care but the staff who worked there. Brian great and very informative video thankyou so much. 😊

In the mid 1980s, I knew two ladies that had been released back into the community from Brockhall. Both ladies had been institutionalised in their teens because they became pregnant, and remained there until the 1980s when they were both aged over 60. Very very sad that so many were wrongly institutionalised.

My Uncle was in Brockhall. He suffered a brain injury from a forceps birth and developed epilepsy as I can best recall......he had a terrible childhood and into his youth was no better...he was taken to Brockhall and died in there in 1976. He was 55 years old...his name was Norman and he was a lovely kind man. My mother always insists there was a unholy event that brought about his death....I remember visiting weekly with my parents....the place was simply colossal and I have vivid memories of the people in that place....I will never ever forget my Uncle nor those poor soles that lived within the confines of Brockhall.

I can wholeheartedly assure everyone who reads this comment that Florence (Diane) was happy at death. As her life had been fulfilled, she had met her lost child, regained loved and felt whole once more. She was a vibrant a lovely lady who gave love to everyone she met. I know this because she was my grandmother. Angel Edit: Years ago she rekindled with my uncle whom she managed to find, he called her mum the second time they met. She died with her heart truly at peace

Well done mate. I did my weeks work experience there in 1982, there were still people there who you would find it difficult to say that there was anything wrong with them apart from some excentricity, I'm from Blackburn, a few friends were psychiatric nurses at Brockhall and Calderstones until ''Care in The Community'' was introduced, which doesn't work very well for people with real mental health issues are cast aside just the same, exept now, they're locked up in council flats, surrounded by people who don't care, and gangs of kids who make their lives hell.
@DarkFascination3 жыл бұрын
Gee Wizz Gus, you have associations with this too? lol thats crazy! I can imagine that not everyone needed to be in there and sadly thats where they stayed. Care in the community I agree is an absolute waste of time, and you described it perfectly with slapping them in a council flat in bad areas almost left to fend for themselves other than a weekly visit from support (if they are lucky) totally agree with this pal and its a shame.

When Brokhall was turned into a housing estate there was a lot of resentment from locals towards Hitman. I can’t remember why, and I didn’t know anything about him. I'm in tears reading this. Volunteers from my school went to help there in the early 70s. I only managed to go for a few weeks because I hated the way the 'patients' were treated. It saddened me so much. I live very close and never knew about this. :-( Thank you Gerald for your thoughtfulness and kindness towards the women (and men) who were there, not because of mental illness in some of the women's cases, but because they had a child and weren't married. If this was today, a huge percentage of the young girls in this country would be locked up there.

I work for the largest Psychiatric trust in the Midlands. We used to have long stay patients, those ladies that had given birth out of wedlock, a male patient who had stolen a slice of bread, because he was hungry, etc etc. The smallest of excuse was used to put them 'away' years ago. Sadly when the time came for the long stay wards to close, they all got seperated and sent to nursing homes. Losing their home and friends in the process. We never had a burial area in the grounds tho, those that died without a next of kin, were buried in the town graveyard.

I remember Brockhall closing, it's a shame for some of the inmates that were sent there, but some did rely on the this place. It was like a whole village from crafts to farming the land etc. I know times were different and difficult for some of the patients I've heard story's over the years of course I have. I loved your report on this , thank you pinac. I watched your latest also but forgot to comment it was also a brill video. All the best chrissy x

Hiya, great video. We discovered recently that a relative of ours was in Langho Colony which I'm assuming was also part of Brockhall Hospital as he's buried in the cemetery and his name is on the memorial plaque. It's heartbreaking. We went today after finding the plot numbers for each of the people buried there. Obviously it's rather difficult to know for sure and I measured by steps. We want to get something a little more permanent from the family. Those pots that are behind the gravedigger's hut are now out along the path opposite which is so nice of whatever kind soul did it. Thanks again for the video and bringing the awareness of the atrocities to a wider audience 👍

With regards to the memorial pots behind the shed, we managed to get the management company to reinstate them, out by the path, you can find out what happened in my follow up video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoLZaJVpipKqha8

I worked here before it closed down and helped with resettling patients in the community I always remember one lady who was resettled she was from Liverpool originally her name was Harriet very lively lady and as sharp and her only reason she was put in brockhall she would play truant from school and was described a wayward I remember her telling me the only way she kept her sanity was by stealing the staff news papers and reading about what was going on in the world . Obviously after the decades of being institutionalise she was a little eccentric but well able to move in to her own home I am glad she eventually experienced freedom even if it was only for a short time

this is so interesting, I must comment on my time working at Calder stones hospital in the early 80ts, I was on a youth opportunity scheme I met quite a few times while walking down the out door corridors a lady who must have been in her 60ts, her name was Alice, she always carried a baby doll with her. and always wanted too cuddle anyone she came across. at the time I was too younge and inexperienced too realize why, but all these years on iv never forgot her. I perssum she was one of those women who made the mistake of becoming pregnant out of wedlock. such a sad story.

This is a little bit of background about Mr Hitman ( I don't remember him being 'completely' the hero of the hour .... he made a fortune out of developing the land ) In addition, different times called for different measures, I visited Brockhall on many occasions as a child for concerts & visited someone we knew in there, in addition I knew many members of staff.... the history of the Hospital over the years changed with accepted practices in mental health care of the time - it did not resemble the image we have of 'bedlam' when it closed in the 1990's. Whilst I am sure there were many sad cases there were many many residents who were kept safe from harm.....I am not entirely sure that community of the Hospital were best served when it closed and 'care in the community' took its place..... Lancashire Telegraph 6 October 2000. 'The Brockhall cemetery at Old Langho, and the former Calderstones cemetery at Whalley, are both to be auctioned off in the next two months. Mr Hitman, who developed Brockhall Village on the site of the hospital, said the NHS had insisted upon him taking on the cemetery when he acquired the rest of the 250-acre site. He decided to put up a memorial to the 628 children and adults who had been buried there -- mostly in unmarked graves because their relatives could not be traced.' Mr Hitman acquired the 250-acre prime building site without paying a penny in 1992 after buying the freehold to 50 acres of it at a London auction several years earlier, reputedly for little money. It gave him the right to the land if Brockhall ever closed. The 50-acre site included 60 staff houses, and health chiefs agreed to hand over the rest of the site in a deal which included guarantees that staff would not be evicted.'

Hello Angela and thank you for the kind information you have shared, I really appreciate your efforts.
