How do Dad’s cope with the demands of a supersize family? Whether you’re the practical or the eccentric type, dads are the glue that hold families together, and when everything goes south, it’s the dad’s everyone looks to for guidance. On this episode, we meet two very different dads who are facing very similar problems.
In the Lewis Household in Bournemouth, Pete’s only son has just flown the nest, leaving this Dad of twelve daughters the only male in a very pink-themed house. With work and all the demands of his many daughters, Pete doesn’t have any time off. Dreams of quality time with wife Tracey are seeming ever more distant and with a grandchild on the way, getting Tracey to stop focusing all her attention on their ever-expanding family is no easy feat. But Dad is the glue that holds this chaotic clan together, and when disaster strikes over Christmas, Dad is needed more than ever.
In Ramsgate Kent, Gary Freer gave up his job as a long distance lorry driver when his wife was struggling to look after so many kids whilst he was away 6 days of the week… But for eccentric party man Gary, the home life suits him just fine. Part of the reasoning behind this decision was that two of their children need a bit of extra help- fifteen year old Jordan has ADHD and is home-schooled whilst seven year old Paul is in and out of hospital constantly with a medical condition affecting his oesophagus. When Paul’s operation is delayed until after Christmas, his illness threatens to put a dimmer on the normally bright and cheery holidays. Can Dad hold the family festivities together with so much to be worried about?

You've completely missed my point. I'm not saying it's wrong to have that many kids. You're right--her body, her choice; what I mean though is that if you want to have that many kids, you shouldnt completely rely on government benefits. I used the Radfords as an example because they're Britain's biggest family, yet they all survive (and are thriving) on the dad's bakery business, WITHOUT any benefits. So the number of kids isn't really an excuse to not work.

I believe they said the mother has arthritis as well. Most people hear arthritis and think oh a little hip or knee pain. Most people dont understand the types of arthritis and how many are incurable systemic diseases impacting muscles, joints, organs, blood, skin. It can be incredibly debilitating and difficult to manage. A family could do much worse than a man giving up at a 25 year career to ensure a struggling teen gets a proper education and chance for success, give a good life and quality care for a sick younger child and a wife with a painful and difficult disease. I think the family are beautiful in their willingness to give and sacrifice for their children to have boundless futures

Arthritis comes at pretty different levels. I'm only 25 years old and have the spine of a 75+ year old man. I'm one of those cases where nothing but surgery and pain killers Is going too help. I worked as long as I could before they saw me as a liability and sacked me. Thankfully there is a good pension scheme in Australia so I'm still able too work 20+ hours a week through a disability enjoyment service, plus the $900+ a fortnight I get from the government. That’s what I was thinking, but then I heard he worked for 25 years. I really wish Americans had an option like that when they or their children got sick. I see so many people fight for benefits when they’re going through really difficult cancer treatment that makes them bed bound, and they don’t get a dime. Plus on top of that they have ridiculous medical bills. I know there’s always people who take advantage, but I’d rather it lean towards it being too easy to get benefits than too hard.

Hello from the US. I live in Mayfield, Kentucky. I was watching your show. And when you had mentioned your son having an esophagus problem, I could relate to that bc my husband had a problem with his when he was a small child and when he was a teenager and he ended up having to have surgery on his. He didn’t have a flap that helped him Swallow and keep his food down. And after the surgery he gained a lot of his weight back and the doctors name was Dr. Ruben Cuadrado. During the time before surgery the only thing he could eat was what we call Pringles Chips in a can. I hope that was helpful! Good luck!!

I am a single mum who gets disability (I don’t get child support or single parent benefits) and I still managed to spend $400 or more on my son around Christmas easily. If you budget and save each week, anything is achievable. How much you spend on your children is of no one else’s concern, if your child isn’t as excited by $10 worth of toys compared to $1000 worth of toys, then you need to reconsider if your child might be spoilt and ungrateful. My son gets just as excited and grateful for a hot wheels car as he does for a huge amount of presents, like it should be.

@@ChronicallyCassidy I honestly wish I could work as well! I think those of us who physically can’t share that. There is quite a few ways to actually have children on your own and it really depends on a few factors to how much it costs. In all honesty. It can cost under $100 but I wouldn’t recommend that - I’d recommend at least getting a lawyer have contracts drawn up. I mean, it can technically free if you really want to. There are websites out there for sperm donation, thank her you can do it all at home. Which you just see a lawyer and have contracts drawn up, you just pay a monthly subscription the service to talk to people. Most people only need the sperm (if they have the egg) - you don’t need IVF or to pay someone to insert the sperm

We only have the one daughter; she was and still is a miracle. I've not been well most of her life, almost died a couple of times. And without her, as she grew up, she saved my life, while my husband didn't quite notice. She's still has all the craziness of an elder teen girl, making one mad for makeup, nails and she's a real prom queen. But, if I'm unwell, or something is needed, there she is. She has awakened herself --most mornings-- since she started school, organised her breakfast and walked to school first with her dad, then raced to school meeting with her friends on the way. I would then do all the after school stuff: ballet, after school lessons, tutoring, dinner, homework, her charities. Now she's off to Uni and I'm glad I can see that she has been and is still a real gift to the world, not to mention to us as well.

Big families are very often the happiest families. Obviously having enough money also helps families be happy, but we need a lot less than we think. If you buy clean, decent-looking 2nd hand clothes, cut coupons, entertain the family by doing things at home, like board games, telling stories, charades, etc., and if you have a strong faith life, you may find that you can save a lot of money. A home garden and home schooling (if it’s possible for you; for some, it isn’t) also help. God bless.

4 hours of daily ironing? Seriously?? I am single withouth any kids and the only occasion I am ironing for is for applications, dates or special dresses! It's pretty sad that the children fall asleep in the living room and when they fall, their parents don't even notice...

Its good the family with 9 children stick together. The Dad was a very hard worker and still is!!!! They only on benefits because their children are sick and need them. People can have as many children as they like. One day their children will work and pay benefits for someone else it all goes around just be thankful for what we have and dont critisize others. Genesis 1:28 NKJV “Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Gods happy so we should be happy and happy for others❤️

I love the guy n family w 12 girls n 1 boy. Most of these big families are financially taking care of their own kids. Why is the one mom n dad both stay at home parents? I have 7 children. 3 of us have brittle bones disease there's so many other medical things like epilepsy add asperger's etc. With me n my kiddos. But be darned if us parents would both stay home? Only 3 of my kiddos are actually mine. I do foster care under the table. I help parents bec successful in any way they need. I morally won't let them pay me for the kiddos bec i want them to be able to get out of the rot. I'm disabled myself also with brittle bones disease, kidney issues, etc. U only need 1 parent at home. You want that many kids, get a job! It's so diff here in the states. I'm not on assitance at all but do know you have to work to be on it. I guess whatever works for people..

They are lazy and uduing their children as an excuse not to work. Even the UKs biggest family the Radfords have one parent working. If they can manage 22(?) children with one parent working these smaller families absolutely can. Using ADHD and reflux as an excuse is ridiculous, both conditions are perfectly manageable especially for a teenager.

Why do you devalue girls? You do know that it's HIS SPERM that's making them girls, right? He has the XY chromosomes. All you have are XX. So, unless he hits your egg with an XY sperm, it's gonna be a girl. If he's that desperate for a boy, adopt one or use IVF to select a boy. But please don't have girl after unwanted girl in a gamble to try to "get" a boy. Be grateful for girls! They're so much easier to raise and so much less likely to be violent. By not valuing them FULLY, you're creating traumatized girls who know they're not "good enough". Really, if any child "isn't what you wanted", you shouldn't have children, or at least give up the unwanted girls for adoption immediately so they can bond with someone who fully values them.
