I really wonder why Indians are so unaware of this even today. Hatsoff to you.. I feel like coming to Fiji and hug all my separated countrymen

Actually I wonder as well. The British were cunning enough to remove the history. Many Fijians don't know the details of Girmit and it is not even taught in our schools.

Thank you for watching and supporting our effort. This history of approximately 2 million people is indeed forgotten. We hope that this simple effort is able to bring the truth to the fore and draw recognition and appreciation for those that strove for the abolition of this inhumane system.

Happy to meet you on this KZbin platform. I always wanted to get in touch with the families of those that returned. This inhumane system affected many lives that are not even recorded anywhere. It's not only about the approx 2 million that were made girmitiyas but also their families that had to suffer as a result of this.

It was very interesting to read about your background. This is quite an amazing site and very informative about a very important part of Indian history. Perhaps you could make the other journey, to Fiji one day to see where your grandfather spent his "Vanvas."

Up till now, we always thought it was Gandhiji who played the main role of getting the girmit system abolished. But in fact, it was Totaram Shanadhya ji! Thank you for bringing this important piece of history to everyone's attention!
@HindiinFiji2 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Pandit Totaram did the groundwork and started a mass movement, he laid the foundation for the abolition that assisted Gandhi's possible satyagrah. If I look at it, I would equate it to the movement that has now started in India after the release of Kashmir Files. Pandit ji's book did the same. The only difference is that at that time there was only print media and plays and dramas which required lot of effort in reaching out to people.

Your presentations throw much light on a very important and crucial part of Indian history, that of the Girmityas, their trials and tribulations. What amazing people they were. I am from Fiji but not a Girmit descendent. I am humbled to have grown up in that beautiful land with so many of my closest friends being descendents of these their great ancestors.. I attended a Girmit function in Brisbane yesterday where these stories and emotions were revisited. I also remember my late father telling me about Pandit Totaram Sanadhya and the book of his experiences written by Banarasidas Chaturvedi. I have the English translation. Deenbandhu Primary School was not far from our house in Suva.My respects to you.
