Actually in Calcutta University,Sir Jadunath Sarkar was a great and great scholar student and Prof of Calcutta University long time back. A renowned Indian historian and scholar. He was most distinguished historians of medieval India. Sarkar's work on the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of Maratha power remains influential in Indian history. The Marathas indeed faced a historic defeat in the Third Battle of Panipat on January 14, 1761, against the Afghan king Ahmad Shah Abdali (Durrani), he got the permission from the Ottomans,very few Historian knew it . This battle was a turning point in Indian history, weakening the Maratha Empire and setting the stage for British colonial dominance. MARATHAS LOST IN THE ANGLO -MARATHA WAR. Before the battle, the Marathas sought alliances with various regional powers, including the Jats, Rajputs, and Sikhs, to counter Abdali's forces. However, these groups, wary of Maratha expansion and due to their own regional concerns, refrained from joining the Maratha cause. The lack of support isolated the Marathas, making their defeat in the battle even more decisive.HINDUS WERE DIVIDED AND STILL TODAY THEY ARE DIVIDED. This intense conflict resulted in tremendous casualties, marking it as one of the largest and bloodiest battles fought in the 18th century. The Marathas' defeat drastically weakened their influence in northern India, enabling British forces to strengthen their hold on the Indian subcontinent.THE MARATHAS ARE THE BRAVEST PEOPLE IN INDIA. Marathas were also very headstrong and not strategic thinkers! They were also seen invaders by the common masses because they looted too much to common folks. That is the main reason they had to fight main battles alone, without support of the people around, and without supply lines. Defeat of Panipat is also because their supply lines were cut, and locals kings did not ally with the Marathas! Another issue was, they had a big contingent of old,women,children who were piggybacking to go to pilgrimage in North India! * All these issues and infighting, caused their downfall. * Sikhs on the other hand, helped EIC during Gadar, and never found the British when they were strong ... * Unity is strength, technology is strength, stealth/cunning-ness is strength - which were ALL not used when EIC fought these post mughal "semi" powers of Hindustan. * And that's why, now I have to live in NJ ! * Luv4rmNJ *

Dr Uday Kulkarni continues the glorious intellectual heritage of Maharashtra established by such scholars as Rajwade, Parasnis, Sardesai, Sarkar, Bhatkhande, Ratanjankar who came from outside the field to lay the foundation of research into our cultural heritage. By writing and publishing in English, Dr Kulkarni has done the country a huge service. I hope he gets the success and recognition that he richly deserves. The Marathas were the last people of India to taste political and economic power. Their history must be understood to appreciate where modern India has come from.

@@jsm3692 my reading of history is a little more nuanced. The rapaciousness of the BEIC meant that the Indian subcontinent was convulsed with too much conflict. Leaders like Ahilya Devi and Mahadji Shinde, if allowed a few more years of peace, could have changed things around. Mahadji Shinde was probably the wisest of all the Maratha potentates after Shivaji, Baji Rao Peshwa, and Madhav Rao Peshwa. He eclectically chose the best of European inputs to improve his administration of North India from his base in Gwalior. As long he was around, the British were kept confined to a smaller role as his military power more than matched that of the British. In the ultimate analysis, Britain's trajectory was on a sharper rise compared to that of India and eventually succeeded in overwhelming India. But Britain destroyed India's well being within 150 years and reduced the subcontinent to a state to penury and misery. The part of India that the Marathas brought under their control became the modern Republic of India, and the parts they lost to the Afghans and the British became Bangladesh and Pakistan. If it weren't for the Marathas, the Radcliff line would have run along the entire length of the Grand Trunk Road south of the Yamuna from Punjab to Bengal and modern India would have been limited only to the peninsular portion of India.

​@@jitendivgi2761 Your analysis on the probable impact on Radcliffe line sans Maratha empire is definitely thoughtful. However I definitely feel, the time from dissolution of Maratha Empire in 1818 to appointment of Sir Cyrill Radcliffe in June 1947, there is a time difference of 127 years, which is massive. It was this time when Indian societies saw a massive change by accepting and at the same time opposing British administration. During these period we Indians had already accepted so called McCauley education and the imprints were deep in our ancestors mind. The anglicized way of thinking, new social reformations, movement of people due to developed rail and travel, dialogue and exchange of ideas, values changed the entire social structure and the demography of India. I know such changes are never overnight, it's a slow chain reaction. Therefore the impact of Maratha rule on India till partition is quiet negligible. This is my personal thought, which I could be wrong.

Unlike the rajputs and other North indian kingdoms, Marathas, starting from Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, always fought against the intruders and outsiders like Mughals, Afgans, British, Portuguese, and tried to keep india integrated. In fact, the Middle, West, and entire South India remain safe because of the Valor of the Marathas. That's the fact.

@mands406 I fully respect the Marathas for their contributions, having lived in Rajasthan and Maharashtra. It is true that they largely removed the Mughal rule from India. They built several temples in Varanasi as well. However, like everything, there are also some darker aspects of Maratha history, which most people in Maharashtra may not know. Also, I'm neither Maratha nor Rajput, who, for some reason, often look down upon each other and are biased toward their respective communities. - Rajputs have been defending India from Arab invasions since the advent of Islam. They significantly slowed down the Islamic expansion. While Islam spread rapidly up to Iran, it faced considerable resistance in India for three to four centuries. - Rajputs were battling Alauddin Khilji's Afghan forces when they conquered the Yadavas of Devgiri. - Until the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, many Maratha generals served Muslim kingdoms in the Deccan. This includes Shivaji Maharaj’s father. - After the Treaty of Purandar, Shivaji Maharaj was unfortunately compelled to form an alliance with the Mughals for some time and act against the Deccan Sultanate. - Even after Shivaji Maharaj, several Maratha Sardars continued to serve the Deccan Sultanate and Aurangzeb. - During the Sultanate army’s campaign against the Vijayanagar Empire, there were substantial numbers of Marathas fighting for them. - It was the Marathas who betrayed Sambhaji Maharaj, leading to his execution. - There are instances of Marathas fighting with Afghans against Rajputs in the north. - The Marathas employed the Pindaris, who were notorious for looting villages and killing people, particularly in Bengal. - There are several officially documented communications within the records of different Rajputana kingdoms about the Marathas ransacking villages. - Their Chauth and Sardeshmukhi taxes were extremely high, even exceeding what the Mughals used to levy. - These high taxes and other policies contributed to the lack of allies for the Marathas at the Battle of Panipat. They even threatened to arrest SurajMal Jat, who was willing to help them. - After losing the Battle of Panipat, when Jat king Suraj Mal gave refuge to many Marathas, they still attacked his kingdom a few years later. - Mahadji Shinde worked with the Mughal king for an extended period. In fact, he played a key role in reinstating the Mughal king as a ruler. For this, Mahadji Shinde was awarded the title of Nizam-ul-Mulk. - When the Marathas were in Punjab, they allied with Adina Beg, who was known for his persecution of Sikhs.

Some people say that Marathas went to fight Abdali just because Najeeb and Abdali killed Dattaji Shinde (one of sadars of Marathas in North) and not to defend the nation. So, even then I mention about Ahamadia Karar (1752) between Marathas and Mughals in which Mughals declared Marathas as their protector from its adversaries like Afgans, can there be any better counter argument to the point that some say about Marathas and their will to defend the nation, all the people who spread this narrative that Marathas didn't want to defend the nation but take revenge of Dattaji's murder by abdali and najeeb are mostly found to be lefitist its my observation

Narayanrao Peshwa was not Peshwa Madhavrao’s son as mentioned by the host. He was his younger brother. And he was not ‘ very young’; he was 18 years old, married, with a son who later became Peshwa himself. These are extremely well known facts. Raghoba had a great desire to be peshwa .he was bajirao 1 son and younger brother of nanasaheb .when vishwasrao died in panipat ,his brother madhavrao became peshwa .when madhavrao did of tb, his brother Narayan Rao was coronated .by this logic raghoba who was brother of nanasahib should have been peshwa as per his desire .it did not take place.in anger he took the criminal path and surrendered to the British .

The loss of IIIBattle of Panipat was soley due to overconfidence of PM of Maratha Empire the Peshwa. Every important chieftain tried to dessuade him not to takr women and old with the army marching for battle. However he made it a pilgrimage and battle took a back seat. Reality is after 1749, means after Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj Thorle(Satara)passsd away, Maratha Empire got more decentralised, which obviously is helpful for administration purpose. But it created more independent powers, who wanted to overpower each other, which unfortunately leads to peshwa bajirao 2 signing a stupid treaty with brits in 1802 and empire starts falling down.

56:00 I am from Rajasthan, I can correct Mr kulkarni here. Sindh faced 18 attacks, even though sindh was lost but same time chieftan of khalifa also killed. While Sindh was facing brutal islamic attacks, Rishi Harit did some what similar what Chankya did with leader as 'Bappa Rawal' and established Mewar kingdom whose borders were upto Rajasthan, Gujarat, parts of MP and parts of Punjab under Mewar kingdom ultimately ruling Delhi. Bappa Rawal army fought Caliph Arab army and defeated him and conquered sindh again. One of wife of Bappa Rawal was Caliph's sister(gifted as part of treaty). For next 50-80 years there were no attacks due to agreement however after that attacks began and very frequent. Rajput kings were consolidated during that time and even bhati raja tag line was "Uttar bhad kiwad bhati" i.e. Bhatis are gates of North, no one can enter until Bhati is lost. The biggest mistake was done by prithviraj chauhan and then rest was history. That said even Aurangzeb never tried to attack Mewar, only in Rajasthan one can find temples 1000's of years old. We in current may find a lot of deficiencies of ancestors but our ancestors must be laughing and furious with us as what chance we have and what we are doing, letting away everything so easily.. see the demographic change around yourself

Marathas were the last great empire of India. Not the Sikh Empire aka the Empire of Western Punjab. It was a regional power. Marathas at their peak ruled over lands stretching from Khyber (with plans of capturing Kabul & Kandahar) to Cuttack and parts of Bengal. From Jammu & borders of Sindh to all the way to Tamil Nadu. Only Marathas ruled so much territory at that time. No other Indian Empire achieved that. That includes Sikh Empire too. So Maratha Empire was the last great 'All-India' Empire. So it was in this sense that the author aka speaker is referring to the Maratha Empire as the last great empire of India. Also, Nepalese Empire aka Nepal remained independent. It suffered territorial losses but survived and remained independent...

Pindaris were the non regulars of army who did not Recieve salary from Peshwa and only depended on loot gained from battles .. So there only option was to loot and earn for themselves.. Royal army was directly paid by Peshwa. Marathas employed these strategy to increase there strength of soldiers as and when required.. For e.g u need 40000 soldiers in Delhi .. But royal army is only 20000 20000 army of Pindaris were employed..

Baji Rao brahmin peshwa erected a law that banned mahars from army and forced the mahars to wear a pot in front of their head and broom 🧹 on their bottom. Because they were untouchable. Brahmins never considered local people as their own. That's why they solidified cast lines. Mahars joined the east india company when given the opportunity to live a dignified life. That's why the Maratha empire came to an end

You could have asked local waqfs about mausoleums before making ignorant accusation. As in any modern economy construction such as mausoleum is the biggest source of employment and patronage in an area. The endowment gardens and agricultural land generated fruit produce water sources and its revenue was used for LANGAR free food while a shelter or school was attached to the tomb. The purpose was to earn continual SAWAB OR MERIT even after death through providing ongoing construction and maintenance employment, free food, shelter, and literacy for the benefit of the economy and local people. The British confiscated waqf lands to reward collaborators in 1858 but the tombs were welfare centres You don't understand the philosophy of mausoleums at least ask the waqf people before talking
