Just like the ghastly emperors shown in the trailer it feels like something horribly wicked and wrong covered up by too many layers of poisonous makeup. The Gladiator 2 has no real need or reason to exist beyond a desperate attempt to prop up a failing movie industry. And even the best if somewhat miscast efforts of the likes of Denzel Washington and Pablo Pascal are unlikely to conceal the rot

That's the opposite of selling it to me, all they're telling me is that it's a soulless cash-in, devoid of creativity or good writing.

You kinda ignored all of the Severan Dynasty, what does occur immediately afterwards is the Year of the Five Emperors, which it kinda looks like they dodge it entirely or glance over it because Macrinus was Caracalla's Praetorian Prefect and it without looking into it it kinda looks like Pascal is playing Caracalla (actually a pretty good fit imo) and the other guy whom I don't recognize is playing Geta larping as Caligula, so we've dodged all five successive emperors after Commodus and Septimius Severus as well. To be fair though the first movie's history was a walking abortion so that isn't really anything new or different for Gladiator, it's dumb fun alt-history for the plebs, so if it checks those boxes without being some woke message-filled nightmare it'll be serviceable, maybe even good.

The only way you could have had a sequel I think with gladiator is if you followed the Namibian guy. Who gets like re-enslaved on his way back home and has to gladiator it up. Honestly it feels like they should have just made another roman movie, not try and marry it to Gladiator. Gladiator wasn't just about fighting, there was tons of politics and weirdness with the emperor's family going on that gave it greater depth. This looks like it will be slanted more toward just fighting stuff.

You know what would have been a good basis for a second "Gladiator" film? Edgar Rice Burroughs's criminally-forgotten "I Am A Barbarian" in which a Briton boy sees his family slaughtered by the invading Romans only to be made the personal slave of a the boy Caligula. He grows up alongside Caligula, watching his descent into madness and slowly nurses his hatred for the family that killed his own, plotting to one day avenge them...culminating in the assassination of Caligula.

Gladiator is basically a perfect movie and contained story that doesn't need a prequel, sequel, or remake. I'm all for more Roman era movies, but just make something new. I am surprised you didn't see one thing. In the trailer, they clearly indicate that Denzel is some kind of freedom fighter who wants to destroy a decadent and corrupt empire. Also, Pedro Pascal seems in conflict with the emperors about waging useless war. It's not like Geta and Caracalla were nice guys, but that's not the point. And of course, the two emperors are very white, crazy, evil, and decadent. While Pedro seems reasonable and frustrated. We don't know it yet, but it feels like Denzel is on a quest to destroy the evil white empire and liberate the people while of course being black... Almost feel like Lucius will be a side character. I hope it will not come to that.

I will see this just for the action. But i am already prepared that this movie will focus more on Denzels character than the intended main character.
