The Glass Bead Game, Movement 1

The United States Navy Concert Band, under the direction of Commanding Officer Capt. Brian O. Walden, performs the first movement (The Call and Awakening) from James Beckel's "The Glass Bead Game" at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts in Bowie, Md., on Feb. 10, 2012. The French horn soloist is Musician 1st Class Jason Ayoub, the Concert Band principal horn.

Incredible! What a fantastic Horn player! So connected and very smooth and clear! The articulations were flawless! He should record a bunch of solo works!

I played percussion for the first movement last year when I was a junior in high school. I absolutely loved this piece and I think this is the best performance of this piece I ever heard. Good Job!! I got to say though, 2:58 - 4:04 is probably my favorite part of the whole song

The opening brings to mind Holst's Planets. I assume this was written in homage to Hermann Hesse. But who is the composer?

Hard to be 100% certain, but judging from the engraving on the bell and the garland on the bell flare, I'm pretty sure it's a Schmidt.

A strong performance by the horn player, Jason Ayoub. However, I would have appreciated a separate microphone for him, as the balance appears off to my ear and he's sometimes overpowered by the band accompaniment. This oversight steals the richness from his tone rendering it thin instead of proud.
