THE GLEN BEYOND || A canoe journey into the heart of the SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

In February 2022, the British Isles were hit by three consecutive storms, some of the strongest seen in decades.
In the days before the storms arrived, we decided to change the plan for our canoeing expedition whilst we were already on our way to Scotland. Instead of paddling the exposed lochs along the west coast, we opted for a more sheltered location. A glen tucked away right in the heart of the highlands. This film showcases the highlights of our journey. Read the full article written by Ian Finch here: www.sidetracked.com/the-glen-...

I do not make any profit from these films. Although I get incredible support from brands for the trips, the costs during the editing process and the licensing of third-party assets (such as music) come from my own pocket. Whilst I know there are options for revenue from KZbin advertising, I want people to enjoy the film without interruptions. @Jaime • As others have said, beautiful cinematography. You also deserve kudos for your selection of music. Too often people merely select music that they like rather than considering whether it enhances the visuals. You have the talent to select music that compliments the visuals and your narration. I also liked the fact that you know when not to talk and to let the visuals speak. The editing and the shots of different elements of the weather had me both remembering the sting of sleet on my face and the breaths of incredibly clean air you only seem to get with that weather. As a spectator who enjoyed your trip and the memories it evoked, feel free to do more. You'll always have avid viewers. 👍

I enjoy putting videos like this together, but It's messages like this that really give me the encouragement to share them with other people. Also I have to add I'm really curious about the paddles I see you with! Is that a typical blade shape in Scotland? We don't see such a broad blade here very much, as most people use a longer narrower "ottertail" shape for flatwater tripping - and typically all one piece rather than these beautiful laminates. I've never heard very much about canoeing in Britain but fascinated by the similarities and differences. Your footage is so beautiful and well done.

Hi Lauren! I love my Nova craft canoe. I’m hoping to get over to Ontario some time soon, if I do I’ll certainly try and get a Nova Craft whilst i’m there. The paddles we use are by Bending Branches, they are from the USA. I have some narrower ottertail shaped paddles but I only tend to use them for very long distance journeys. Paddling here is not like it is in Canada, but we make the most of what we have! Glad you enjoyed the film!

I'm glad you think the same way! Many years ago, the terms were easily mixed up. I made the same mistake when I was young!

Did you use a gimbal for the handheld shots Jamie ?

Hey there! I did not, everything I shot was hand-held. I’d love to bring my DJI Ronin with me on trips like this but I haven’t found it practical to do so as I’m actively trying to get a variety of different shots.

@@JamieBarnes thanks for the reply. Good to know. Yes the Ronin is massive - I’ve had mine for years and don’t use it!

Wow the ending ( I enjoyed all of it too no question about that ) but the separation of the back ground was very cinematic what was this called ???

Glad you liked that! I think its commonly known as the parallaxed effect. Its simply taking an image and splitting it into multiple sections to give it the illusion of being 3D. Its a relatively simple process if you have the video editing tools to do it. The hardest thing is just have the right image to split into appropriate sections!
