My mom gave me a Glock model 20 for high School graduation. I open carried because concealed-carry wasn't legal then. I literally had a "note from my mommy" saying it was okay for me to have the pistol. Once my mom and I were planning to meet up at a gun shop and my car had a tire blow out. This was in the days before cell phones were cheap and common. I flagged down a passing cop. He gave me a ride to the gun store so I could meet up with my mom and get some help from her and we talked guns the whole way. He was carrying a model 21. He asked me why 10mm and I said moose bears and 2 more rounds. He was like yeah totally makes sense!

My friends are 40 cal haters. I bought one decades ago, stainless as a gun for the bathroom. There were not that many good 9mm loadings back then and I didn't want to take chances in an Alfred Hitchcock moment. The stainless is self explanatory. It has been the perfect bathroom accessory and although it may seem peculiar to some, not once have I been brutally murdered in the shower. I've not so much as had a knock on the door...

Thanks for an informative video; Glocks certainly seem to be more adaptable to larger cartridges than other designs--10mm is a LONG way from 9mm! A bit of background: In the mid-'80s, the FBI adopted the Winchester SilverTip 9mm 115gr cartridge on the basis of findings by the National Institutes of Justice that determined that velocity and 'hydrostatic shock' were the fundamentals of stopping power. After the Miami Shootout, where one 9mm was found to have gone through an attacker's right arm and chest, but stopped just short of the heart (this shot would have eventually been fatal by itself, but didn't stop the assailant immediately), penetration became the name of the game, hence the attention given to the 10mm and eventually the 147gr 9mm.

Now something else about 10mm vs 40 S&W, is the one clear advantage 40 still has is price and availability, because for those of us who do not reload nor like buying ammo online, it's a real crap shoot on 10mm because sometimes you'll walk in and there'll be plenty of boxes like Sig Elite but other times nothing except like 3 boxes full nuclear Buffalo Bore Hard Cast

I own the G20 Gen3 10mm. I bought a LoneWolf 6" barrel for it and both 20lb and 22lb recoil springs. Shooting the 200,220 and 230gr loads have been nothing but unreliable for me. The DT 230gr wouldn't even drop all the way into the LW 6" barrel. I'm sure there is a way to make it run better but it has been a very expensive gun for me. Shooting 180gr FMJ from Underwood have worked fine. I can't trust this gun. I bet it will shoot standard loads with stock spring no problem. Just not the hot stuff. I bought it for backpacking and wanted to carry heavy loads only. Looks like FMJ 180/200 is the only reliable option with the parts I have for it. I haven't bothered with it for years now.

Not to say all issues of breakages and/or failures with 10mm Delta Elites was overstated or false, but I will say there was at least one exception. In 1992 I bought a Colt Delta Elite with a match barrel (extra). I fired every kind of ammo available at that time from the worst, dirtiest, slowest range ammo to the very hottest self defense rounds. Over-all I must have fired the pistol at least 15,000 rounds without ever experiencing any breakage and only 1 in possibly 1500 fail to eject, and the only failures happened when firing aluminum cased ammunition. Otherwise, absolutely Zero (0) failures. Perhaps I got lucky and got one of the few without issues but I'd say more likely a greater number of the many "issues" recorded with the Delta Elites was caused by the shooters' lack of maintenance or limp wrist shooting.

@onkelmicke96705 жыл бұрын

@texasbeast2392 жыл бұрын
The Delta had actual cracked frames. That wasn't from poor maintenance or limp-wristing. At some point, Colt cut a relief void space out of the sides of the frame where the frame binding was greatest, and this prevented the cracks. And apparently when they re-released the gun years later, they had redesigned the frame so the relief cut was no longer necessary. But it still only has half the capacity of more modern designs.

I've heard two stories on the recoil being bad for FBI agents qualification. One person on forum who claimed to be retired FBI (yeah I know...) claimed that the load was actually cut down to 40 S/W levels on the recommendation of trainers PRIOR to any regular FBI agents qualifying with it. Have you heard anything on that?
@45eno5 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert on these matters but from my reading years ago is that yes the FBI had issues with all their agents being able to handle the recoil of the round and found that loading it to a lighter standard provided adequate performance and was easier to shoot. I read it was called 10mm lite or 10mm FBI loading. Then somewhere down the line someone was able to cut down the casing and create the same ballistics of the 10mm lite but in a shorter cartridge that could fit the frame of a 9mm. This is what spawned the 40SW. There is tons of write ups and videos out there on the history of the 10mm.
@texasbeast2392 жыл бұрын
I have read up on the controversy as well. Bren Ten went bankrupt in 1986. Part of the Bren Ten's notoriety was a rash of cracked slides that couldn't handle hot ammo. The FBI began extensive scientific analysis and then testing of handgun ammo as a result of the Miami shootout that year. In 1987, Colt released the Delta Elite, but by early 1988 the Delta had already earned a reputation for cracked frames from hot loads. This hung an albatross around the neck of both the gun, and the ammo. Would there EVER be a gun that could truly handle 10mm without reservation? In the summer of 1988, the FBI decided to pit 9mm and .45ACP directly against each other to determine the agency's ammo of the future. Then the FBI Firearms Training Unit (FTU) director, Supervisory Special Agent John C. Hall, thought that 10mm should be able to compete as well, as he owned a Delta and was fond of the cartridge. He got the necessary authorization. (But he wasn't about to go running hot, risky 10mm through his precious, personal gun!) In the name of science, the FTU decided they would need an experimental control. What they decided on was a muzzle velocity of 950fps, to ensure that all calibers could compete. Officially, the FTU determined that hot 10mm would be too powerful for standard issue, with the thought of female and smallframed male personnel in mind. (And safeguarding that sweet Delta almost certainly factored into the decision, as well!) So the FBI's decision to neuter 10mm appears to have been made before the agency ever even tested the caliber, and before it ever issued any gun chambered in it or any cartridges. It was a case of bureaucratic PE: premature emasculation. There were no commercial 10mm loads available in 1988 that went that slow. So initially, the FBI had to buy ammo off the shelf, pull the bullets, and reload to their desired spec. Later, Federal won the contract. The 10mm cartridge beat the others, and in 1989 JAN, the FBI announced that it had selected the caliber for their future issued sidearms. But there were no confidence-inspiring 10mm guns on the market at that time. So the FBI sent out a request for proposals, calling for an external safety, decocker, and some sort of device for pretravel takeup, in an all-steel package. Glock protested, insisting the specs were unnecessarily restrictive so as to keep them out of the running, and predicting that the FBI's design parameters would cram too much into the gun and lead to jams. In 1990, the FBI decided upon the S&W 1006, a beefy all-steel unit based upon the 4506 which was built from the ground up for heavy duty ammo. The FBI didnt want the specter of any more cracked slides or frames hanging over its head. The issued FBI ammo received a small bump up in performance. Reports vary between 975 and 985fps. So here was the situation: the FBI had contracted for a heavy duty 10mm gun to be made for its agents, and then it turned around and ran practically the weakest 10mm ammo known to mankind through it. The guns were not amused. And I remain convinced that this mismatch of strong gun/wealth ammo doomed the project from the get-go. Some female cadets and agents complained that the Smith gun was too big for their hands. Hall supposedly lent them his narrower Delta in order to qualify at Quantico. There was also the not-so-little problem of jams. Remember Glock's prediction? Yeah, THAT. Pistols began to be recalled back to Quantico for tweaks, but jams persisted, and in 1991 the 1006 was recalled back to S&W for a real fix. By the time S&W submitted its analysis and a list of recommendations, the FBI washed its hands of both the gun and the caliber. Over the next few years, the FBI issued several different models of guns, both in 9mm and .45ACP. Meanwhile, in 1990, S&W announced they had developed a shorter version of the 10mm cartridge, called the .40S&W. This would allow the use of smaller magazines and smaller gun frames than the 10mm. And this proved very attractive to the FBI. In 1997, the FBI began issuing the Glock 22 in .40. And its .40 load had the same performance specs as the 10mm load it had issued 7 years before. This remained the agency's issued sidearm and load until the return to 9mm in 2015. Now, the fact that the FBI chose the same performance specs for its .40S&W load as it had for its prior 10mm Auto load shows quite definitively that the FBI did NOT reject 10mm because the agency thought it was too powerful. It liked the power output quite nicely. The FBI rejected 10mm because the agency had chosen a dud gun for the caliber, and also because in double-stack form, the ammo required a gun that was too large for a considerable number of agents.

I do enjoy all the Glock 10mm models. I own them all. If you want a smoking load try the 155gr XTP from Underwood. That's the best load to date. Even better than Buffalo Bore. 775 ft lbs. That's a potent round. I think some models can have caliber conversions. Such as a .357 Sig in a G29? Maybe. Saw some guy online had so many calibers for one frame. Think it was a G29 or G30SF. I think the 30SF fits on the G29SF frame. So I heard. Maybe Glock should borrow from Sig. Interchangable frames, slides and barrels as a kit. Or is the G20 just built that much tougher then a G22 and would last just as long or longer even ? I've wanted one for sometime now but never did for fear of it breaking on me . But at least now I know which one to get if I do , Glock20 : )

@Al Codie To put this in perspective, 10mm factory ammo generally runs $0.50US and up per round. A Glock 20 sells for about $550 currently. If it lasted only 10,000 rounds, you'd have spent at a bare minimum $5000 on ammunition costs alone wearing it out. If you can afford to do that, you probably can afford to buy a replacement as soon as you need it.

From the Man himself, i.e. Chairman Jeff: ""We recently had occasion to discuss the history of the Bren Ten with a correspondent who was obviously more of a collector than a shooter. The Bren Ten was a concept of mine, and while I am not ashamed of it, I admit that this concept was not entirely sound. What the Bren Ten pistol achieved over, for example, the 1911, was range. The full-house, 10mm cartridge - definitely not the attenuated 10s which are popular now - pushed the effective range of the combat sidearm out beyond that which is usually expected. But extending the manageable range of a combat pistol out beyond the ability of the shooter to utilize it does not accomplish much. The full-house Bren Ten should be able to achieve reliable one-shot stops out to at least 50 meters, but pistol actions do not take place at 50 meters. The combat pistol is best employed at distances hardly more than across the room, and the Bren Ten will not do this any better than the venerable 45 ACP, or so it would seem." I finally got on the 10mm wagon late last year after Springfield released the XDm-10 (so far, I am impressed). IMO what the 10mm brings to the table now is versatility due to wide range of power of loadings. It is the choice of having one handgun that can be employed to do many things reasonably well if not optimally or having multiple handguns better suited for specific roles and having to learn each one and its quirks and trying to keep them available as needed.

I have to disagree with COL Cooper that 10mm cannot perform any better than a .45. The FBI showed differently, Marshall & Sanow showed differently with 10mm's performance twin (96% for .357 Mag vs. 94% for .45 ACP), and Ellifritz also showed differently (61% one shot stops and 9% failure for .357 Mag vs. 51% OSS and 14% failure for .45 ACP).

@mountainhobo5 жыл бұрын
@jingq2: On average (no exotic loads): 9 mm ~ 360 ft·lbs .45 ACP ~ 400 ft·bs .40 S&W ~ 470 ft·lbs 10 mm ~ 700 ft·lbs Which always made me wonder why, in my hands, fired out of Glock 22, the .40 S&W seems milder in recoil than the .45 ACP fired out of Glock 21. Is it all due to the weight of the bullet (165 gr vs. 230 gr)?

Do you regard this pistol as a better option then the Sig 220 in 10mm? I'm surprised you didn't mention the chamber support issues of the G20, and an aftermarket barrel is needed to add more chamber support and shoot cast hunting bullets accurately. Plus for the hottest loads of 10mm loads, you need to switch to a higher weight recoil spring to get the higher velocities. The standard recoil spring allows the chamber to open early degrading velocity. For these reasons I bought the Sig 220 legion 10mm instead.
@snunez19115 жыл бұрын
@ItalianBrownsFAN I'm pretty sure with the hot Underwood loads, there a bigger difference then 20fps

The Glock barrel are not designed to shoot cast Bullets, only jacketed.
@snunez19115 жыл бұрын
@@SmallArmsSolutions Yes, the reason why I mentioned it. Now people are buying for bear defense and the best rounds for that are cast. Therefore requiring an aftermarket barrel.

Gen 4 with the dual recoil spring doesn't need to be changed. I've shot 40 SW loads to Norma spec loads and the gen4 G20 will eat it all. I reload the brass as well. If you are running too hot for a stock Gen4 G20 barrel then your above spec 37500 PSI. P220 is a lower capacity "target" style pistol. Hammer fired, and can be purchased SAO. G20 is at its core, a Glock. High capacity combat pistol with reliability as top priority. Two completely different animals. With enough practice, you might be able to shoot a G20 as well as a P220 in a practical sense. You wont however, get a P220 as reliable or high capacity as a G20.

Rob Kilcollins Agreed. Stock gen 4 will run any factory Ammo, even full house underwood etc, except the lead. I wonder if the gen 5 marksman barrel can shoot lead?, I’m thinking it can? Hmmm

For two legged attackers, LuckyGunnerAmmo alleges on a video on YT that the .40 S&W delivers basically the same terminal ballistics and self defense capability (penetration) as 10mm. What’s your reaction?
@chromosomehoarder69273 жыл бұрын
Lucky gunner only tested big box brand ammo for there test. The issue that comes with that is the fbi load became the standard for 10mm so it is 40cal ammo with a longer case 10mm has a lot more potential than anything they tested lucky gunner tends to do this a lot. With there 9mm tests they bought top of the line ammo to compare to standard ammo in calibers like 40. 9mm is absolutely capable of great things but not in its standard configuration

Don't see the point in a G20 anymore mow that there is a longslide G40. The G20 is already too big, if you are willing to deal with the bulk may as well add some barrel and sight radius length.

I have both and the G20 is friendlier to handle in the woods. G40 is a long stick. If you dont need an optic, and arnt shooting for bullseye groups, (most G20 users) the G20 is just as viable as the G40.

The Glock 20 would in my opinion be a good choice for a back up gun in bear country with full power loads. A home defense gun in a family setting meh 🫤. A few issues come into play. The first and foremost being something called over penetration. 10mm round blows through the burglar through the wall behind said burglar and kills your child asleep in the bed behind all this drama. Imagine trying to explain that to the police or your wife. You could also find yourself looking at a negligent homicide charge plus having to live with that on your conscience the rest of your life. This is not a time to let your testosterone overrule COMMON SENSE! I’m hesitant to use certain 9mm loads in the house let alone a 10mm. Help your family survive a home intrusion event. Keep the bear blaster bazooka for the woods. A 9mm with hollow points or an 18.5 inch 12 gauge loaded with #4 buckshot minimizes over penetration issues and is more than sufficient for home defense.
