After listening to your review, it’s interesting that you do appreciate the music so much without really understanding much that’s happening within it, other than the general concept of “street life in Buffalo”. I would really encourage you to look more into not only their catalogue, but their stories and them as artists. While you may have valid points about hip hop and high fashion/art culture, Westside Gunn is already being accepted in that world and is a lover of both. The intro skit wasn’t just random. He constantly makes art and fashion references. It’s a part of who he is as an artist and person. And he isn’t saying “woo woo woo” lmao. He’s mimicking gun sounds. “Boo-boo-boo-boo-BOOM!!” The skit that you say they’re imitating DMX is just audio from an internet video of a crackhead couple performing on the street lol. As far as the mink at the Sabres game and whatever else they talk about in their music; if they said it, it most likely happened. Something like that, I can almost guarantee really happened. The wrestling references are because they, particularly WSG, love wrestling. He owns part of a wrestling promotion. He has a whole line of merchandise dedicated to wrestling. The thing that kinda bugs me here is that you don’t really know much about these guys but at times you seem to make somewhat ill-advised assumptions. Again, I encourage you to look into them more. I think it’d increase your appreciation that much more. It was an entertaining review though.

Griselda Records was originally GxFR (Griselda by fashion rebels) his brand, so Westsidegunn has always loved clothing and clothing culture, and the Pray for Paris was basically him saying pray for them because i've arrived.

Also because westside gunn had just received his passport to france for the first time in his life which was always a dream for him..also he has a connection with Kanye's Fashion protege, world renowned designer Virgil Abloh(who designed the album cover art for westside for this album)..ive gotta give Westside alotta credit hes become a genius at making connections with the right people to help build their Griselda brand around everything they're organically about.

He said they don't understand high culture and Art. Then invalidates what he is saying by saying Westside Gunn is today's Carvagio, thats exactly what Westside Gunn is saying by using Carvagios painting, using Paris and Fashion week as the Influence for his "Art". I think this guy tried to deconstruct it without seeing what it is in essence. Its a new renaissance which is blending the old with the new and creating modern art. Fashion is an element of Hip Hop that is often forgotten, people like Westside Gunn and Kanye embrace that element and it is a fundamental part of their expression and experience in Hip Hop hence why they are so evolved in the fashion world and Art world.
@professorskye3 жыл бұрын
Maybe I didn't express myself clearly enough. I am absolutely in agreement with you that we are in a renaissance and that hip-hop is an integral part of high culture. I do think that part of the reason that this has happened is that hip-hop artists have (mostly) not had the level of education and exposure that one usually associates with "high culture." That is not a knock on them. I don't think that Westside Gunn is less of an artist because I probably know more about Caravaggio than he does. To the contrary, people who make best culture are rarely the people who study it. Take for example, me! This is true for all forms of art. This is why critics are usually such bad artists. The present and future of all culture is hip-hop. The fact that this is not understood by many people is because they are not paying enough attention.
@onlybuilt4cruciallinx6763 жыл бұрын
@@professorskye I hear you and agree to some extent but I'd argue that even using a Carvaggio painting shows he has some interest and possible knowledge of Art and high culture maybe not to the level of a graduate but the knowledge is there, after all Artists throughout history didn't necessariy study previous artists to Graduate level (I think if they did they wouldn't have had time to create themselves), Art is about expression and the individuals experience whether at a spectator or participant point of view. Westside Gunn is defining his outlook on Art by expressing his experience tied to the prescribed bourgeoisie narrative. Look at someone like Dapper Dan for example, a Bootleg Tailor from Harlem which is one of the most respected individuals in the Fashion world to the point where Gucci ended up collaborating with him years later because of the style and trend he set using their Monogram. My point is I don't believe high society define what is or isn't Art, fashion and culture people do. You don't have to be a Graduate to appreciate fine Art or luxurious things nor do you have to study at university level to educate yourself on it, the Internet is at our fingertips for us to discover and learn about anything which we have an interest in albeit that knowledge may not be classified by a qualification on a piece of paper. **Reading your response again I have realised we are more in agreement than anything. Great content, keep up the good work.

Like rich white people who buy expensive art isnt just buying it to "flex" most of the times aswell , most people who buy expensive art at auctions couldnt tell the difference between Chagall or Miró if their life depended on it. But if a black guy buys art you wanna talk shit. That rubbed me really wrong and you should be questioned for saying what you said.

This video is from awhile ago, so I don’t remember exactly what I said, but I appreciate your criticism. In general on my channel I fight really hard to combat the kind of racism you are describing.
