Patroclus is often portrayed as a beautiful, cherubic youth whose characteristics contrast that of Achilles, yet this book as well as a passing reference earlier in the Illiad establish him as a manly ferocious warrior in his own right. There seems to be some variation as to the death of Patroclus: the original Homeric telling, has Hecter parade himself in the armour of Achilles in contempt for the Achaeans & Achilles. This act enrages Zeus, as the armour was a gift by the gods to Peleus the father of Achilles and can only be possessed by someone gifted or loaned by an original owner; thus Hecter commits dishonour & Zeus aligns against the Trojans thereafter as a consequence.

"Patroclus is often portrayed as a beautiful, cherubic youth whose characteristics contrast that of Achilles," This part is probably because of Shakespeare. To the Greeks, Patroclus was the older one/erastes, but Shakespeare kinda warped their relationship to suit his idea I guess.

Patroclus vs Sarpedon is one of the gretatest duels in the Iliad, and that because we see that even Zeus himself can't go against to what the Fates decided for each mortal, even if this mortal is a son of Zeus. The battle that followed Patroclus's death, for the retrievement of his dead body is one of the bloodiest in the entire Iliad, and it was once again Ajax in this critical moment, who step forward.

It’s not that he can’t go against the fates. The main point is that he can’t show too much favouritism otherwise the gods would do even worse taking his actions as an example

Nor did I, it was always Hecter who did the slaying following a hard battle. It might be because Patroclus was prophesied to fall in the event that he crossed paths with him, and it is Hecter who takes credit for slaying Patroclus, in addition to profaning the Armour of Peleus(father of Achilles), and leading the Trojan forces?

Although it is true that Patroclus and Achilles were portrayed as lovers in later retellings of the Illiad that occured 200 years after Homer’s death, in the first tellings of the myth by Homer himself, the two WERE actually just friends. Their bond was intended to symbolize the undying loyalty between brothers in arms.

It is disgraceful to intervene in human conflict to protect one if their descendants. And yet isn't that what Aphrodite did? To save her son, only for Diomedes to recklessly graze her hand with a spear.
@wilhelmrk
@wilhelmrk 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, so basically they Gods intervened in the war directly at the beginning, with Ares and Apollo even going so far as roaming the battlefield (that is when Diomedes defeats Ares by throwing his spear into the belly of the god of war). Only after that does Zeus decree that no god should interfere (directly).

Of course it is disgraceful, but gods will break the rules just slightly less than mortals will. The concept of belief was different back then, by Greeks anyway, and they didn´t have organized religion (the birthcause of all evil)... That´s why western Europe had 1000years of dark ages, while the eastern roman empire had none of it: Eastern Romans were romanized Greeks, and the emperor had all powers, while the christian church being just another power-tool of his, used with great wisdom. Western Europe had continous wars between emperors and popes, and when the popes were winning, Europe was sinking deeper in the dark ages, and when the emperor was winning, they were merely getting the chance to correct the damage, that the previously ruling pope has caused, without any net-progress for 1000years...
