This was essentially a rip-off of Final Score and Gillette Soccer Saturday, which began right at the start of ITV2’s lifespan in 1998. When ITV2 was launched, the network wasn’t sure what direction it would take, so they decided to introduce a fast-moving show featuring the latest football results from England and Scotland. This show, called Football First, was hosted by Graham Beecroft, a long-time journalist for TalkSPORT. However, since ITV didn’t have the rights to Premier League highlights at the time, the show focused more on the EFL. In 2000, when ITV gained the rights to the Premier League, Brian Barwick, the ITV controller of sport, announced that the show would be relaunched as The Goal Rush starting in the 2001/02 season. The relaunch included replacing Beecroft with Angus Scott as host, with Ron Atkinson as the main analyst. Other analysts, such as John Barnes, Clive Allen, Jim Beglin, and Paul Elliott, also provided commentary. The show would air similarly to how BBC’s Final Score operates today, starting on ITV2 half an hour before the Saturday kick-offs, then switching to ITV1 at 16:30 for the climax of the day’s Premier League games. Despite its high aspirations, The Goal Rush set an unwanted record by achieving the lowest-ever audience share in ITV history with just 3% on Grand National day in 2002. After news broke in August 2003 that the BBC had regained the Premier League highlights rights, The Goal Rush didn’t even last through ITV’s final season of Premier League coverage. It was axed with its final episode airing on the last Saturday before Christmas during the 2003/04 season.
