If you look on the quilt for the fast box you have. There is a little clip and loop up from the foot box. If you hook those 2 together you wont get that draft you had. But it does make getting your feet out a little bit trickier. I have 2 of their quilts. I got the synthetic 25 degree with fast foot box and the 10 degree down with the convertible foot box. I purchased the synthetic insulated sheet and the light sheet. The insulated sheet feels awesome while the light sheet is slippery like silk but doesn't feel like silk. I love both of these quilts. I'm very excited to see they are bringing out an insulated light sheet.

I spent 5.5months attempting a thru-hike of the AT last year…and the 10 degree Zenbivy light bed with the convertible foot box was with me the whole way :) Cowboy camped with it, got it covered in dirt, and had a few unfortunate encounters with water getting into the stuff sack, but it NEVER let me down. MASSIVE thanks to Dan for turning me on to this sleep system in his comparison video (Zenbivy light Bed vs. Big Agnes Lone Ranger). I have a ZenBivy LOVE IT! I am a cold sleeper and I stay warm. It is a 30 degree setup with the full sheet. Always leave the quilt attached to the sheet. Makes setting up faster.

I've been using a budget Frankenstein version of the zenbivy. My pad is the REI Helix large wide, the sheet is the Alton goods fitted sheet, the quilt is the Featherstone moondance 25, and the pillow is the wise owl medium pillow. I don't wake up, I don't feel sticky and I've taken this setup down to the thirties with 80% humidity. This is the best sleep system I've ever had and works even better on a naturehike cot.

Thanks Dan@! On our first outing with our ZenBivy Core beds, I experienced a problem... I wore my convertible shorts, which have belt loops, to bed (no belt). I tend to roll around at night and it was unseasonably warm in early Oct. 2023 in Dan's favorite Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, so the quilt was not attached to the sheet. On at least two occasions, these belt loops caught on the hooks on the sheet in the middle of the night; two hooks broke. ZenBivy repaired the hooks for free and shipped it back to me at their cost; I appreciated this, and wasn't expecting it. And no, I likely didn't read the instructions completely so if there is mention about wearing things to bed that can get caught on the hooks, I missed it. Be forewarned, don't wear anything to bed that would catch the hooks. Peace.

I have two. I have a 25 and a 10 both light quilts and 2 sheets, one is the 10degree core sheet that’s 30in wide for car camping, and the full length 10deg light 25in wide. Being able to mix and match depending on what I’m doing is incredible. The new light sheet is only half length, if you want the full length light get it now before the sell out. Love these quilts they’re a game changer

Core Quilt Synth 25, Uninsulated Sheet, I got some sort of 2" Hex Pad with reflective tech inside. Slept down to 25 deg, and up to 72 deg ...no problem. Most comfortable and convenient camping sleep gear ever.

I bought a small, lightweight zip-up pillowcase for my Zillow Pillow. Not because it feels better, but because I can just wash the pillow case instead of the pillow. Something like that for the Zenbivy pillow might help with the feel as well. And you can just cut holes for the connection points.

I have a genuine question about hiking quilts. Does anyone else feel that they are just trying to reinvent the wheel by trying to make it as close as possible to a sleeping bag without being able to call it a sleeping bag? By the time you add the retaining straps, the foot box, the draft shields at the sides, the hood, the under sheet, and all the other design details that separate it from being just a thick insulated flat sheet (comforter/duvet), haven't you just basically made 90% of a sleeping bag? 🤷🏻‍♂️ the only difference I can see is that you lay directly on your sleeping pad compared to a sleeping bag base between you and the pad. I'm 47, I've been camping since I was a kid and genuinely don't see what's wrong with sleeping bags that needs fixed by adding all the extra complexity, straps, pieces and hassle to assemble modern quilt systems 🤷🏻‍♂️ apart from the obvious argument someone will make of "But it's 57 grams lighter!" 🤣 It just seems like it's 7/8's of a sleeping bag with assembly required

Nope. Huge difference. The quilt system stays put while you rotisserie inside it. Bags can't do that.

The quilts that everyone uses were originally for hammock campers. The reason for them being open in the bottom like they are is because it's very difficult to get into a regular sleeping bag when you're in the hammock. Since you should be using a bottom quilt under the hammock for insulation, you don't need a fully enclosed sleeping bag. The ground dwellers at some point started using top quilts to drop some weight. Plus, when you're laying in a sleeping bag, you crush the insulation under you, and it becomes useless for keeping you warm. That is why you use a sleeping pad or mat.

@@MastaSquidge Doesn't seem like a massive difference 🤷🏻‍♂️ I've had bags over the years that have done both: stayed with you as you roll over (which is my preference and I love my Deuter Exosphere bags for that reason) or stayed in place for you to spin inside it (which can be aided by some sleeping pads which have sticky traction decals on them to stop your bag sliding, the Vango Trek 3 pad I had before I upgraded to a Thermarest). If it works for you then awesome 👍🏻 I'm not convinced enough to drop the cash required to try that kind of system out in case I don't get on with it. If Zenbivy want their products tested in the Scottish Highlands I'll happily take a demo setup for a couple of weeks though 🤣

I have both the Light clipped and the Zen zippered 25° systems paired with the Big Ag Rapide pad, and I am 1000% satisfied with them. I doubt I'll be shelling out for that ultralight system though, its just too much money. Zenbivy has a great setup, there's no doubt about that. The day I got my first Zenbivy, I returned my Nemo Disco sleeping bag to REI. I'm sold on the Zenbivy system now. My upgrades will be a 10° quilt and the 30" universal sheet to use with the pad in my Haven Tent hammock.

I associate the quilted pads with more expensive brands like Sea to Summit and some Big Agnes pads. I always look for quilted pads. I find they reduce pressure points a lot better than other baffle designs. So I may have to try this one.

I bought the 10 degree light bag + sheet and got to use it for the first time a few weeks ago. I’m a cold sleeper and temps dipped to about 28 and I was toasty warm. Paired with a BA Rapide, I’ve never slept better. I don’t think I can justify the cost to upgrade to the ultralight unless it was discounted. I also like the full length sheet - it stays put better than a half sheet. And, you couldn’t pry my Thermorest pillow out of my hands. I’ll never be an UL hiker with this stuff but it sure is comfortable.

I got the core synthetic quilt, sheet and pillow for christmas. Doesnt pack down as small, but it's fantastic for me. Used it the first time on the weekend. Only complaint is that i need more pillows, but thats a problem due to my shoulder width, not the pillow itself.

I bought a Zenbivy set up several years ago before they went to the "light" model. I absolutely love it. A friend borrowed it for a weekend trip and liked it so much she bought one. All of their beds have the advantage that you're not sleeping directly on your mattress -- I find that much more comfortable. I sleep in a hammock on 90% of my hikes, and I like that I can take just the quilt & leave the sheet/hood at home. If I needed a new set up, I'd buy either the light or UL. I've had such a good experience with my gear and with Zenbivy's customer service that I believe it'd be money well spent. But I also expect my current Zenbivy quilt to last a few more decades, and in a few more decades I likely won't be hiking anymore.

Great stuff. I already have their light bed system, a 10f and 25f quilt plus the 40f synthetic. Unfortunately, it would cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars for me to upgrade just for about half a pound savings so I doubt I'll ever get to enjoy the new stuff. If I was building a kit from scratch would definitely buy the UL version though. No hesitation. The light version is phenomenal.

I've one of the original style Zenbivy beds from a couple years ago and have to say, while it is expensive, it's so worth it for comfort. It's really bulky though, a lot like how old my MOLLIE military sleep bag, but weighs a whole lot less. I don't backpack, but car camp instead, so having this level of comfort at hand is worth it.

I have the 25° light bed and it fits inside the 7L dry bag and then compresses down super well...I'd say maybe 6"diameter and 6" tall. The UL is supposed to fit in the same size dry bag, so should be similar.

Honestly, it looks like a no-go for me. I've been thinking about quilts for long time because i'm a big guy and i always feel restricted on sleeping bags. But this one, looks like it will still make you feel restricted with those attachments/straps. Also, price it's out of charts, specially if you consider adding shipping cost out of USA.

Nope, you won’t feel restricted. In quilts I always size up anyway. You don’t have to clip in at all, but most people start clipped in on one side then gradually clip into the other side throughout the night to add warmth. I have two UL quilts by the major competitor and I can tell you, this is the better product.

For anyone curious and wanting another actual review, I’ve used this setup a handful of times except I paired it with a big Agnes rapide sl pad instead of the zinbivy pad. This setup is great if you move around in bed a lot at night and get too hot or too cold easily. I’ve used it as low as 25° and as warm as around 80° and slept comfortably in it. Being able to seal it up to be more of a “bag” really helps in colder weather and being able to unseal it is great for warmer weather. Being able to stick your feet or legs out if you need to stretch is also helpful. It isn’t cheap but if you can’t seem to get comfortable in closed off bags then it’s 100% worth the price

Not sure why you would consider this system a GOAT given some of the problems you experienced with the pad, drafts, hood, etc. Not even close to GOAT status. Hope their sponsorship was significant cause they are definitely buying your influence… I’ll stick with my customized UGQ, NeoAir XLite pad, Cocoon silk liner, and ZPacks pillow w/neck gaiter. Snug as a bug in a rug!

Hae you tested the old Flextail pump vs the new one? IIRC the old one, while a bit bulkier, was also a bit more piwerful. That might make the difference between needing to add a few breaths to the pad or being able to get it fully inflated with just the pump.

Looks cool. I have a similar sleep system made by Ukrainian company Rock Front. The difference is that the sheet has a zipper on it, so the entire quilt stays on top of the pad and is fully attached to it with no holes. You may want to check it out.

Initial thoughts: 1) Too complicated 2) Doesn’t come in shorter lengths. As a shorter (female) person I find the standard sizes of most pads force me to unnecessarily carry extra weight and waste my tent space. More 60 to 66” sizes would be nice. Like your channel, Dan!

I decided to try this out. Full on Ultralight 10 degree Quilt, Large ZenBivy Pillow, Flex-air mattress, Insulated 10 degreen insulated sheet and wow. It got to 27degrees and I slept really good. I can’t believe I spent $1K on that system but I can tell already best money spent. My only challenge is using the Flextail Zero isn’t cutting with inflating the Flexair Matress.

How’s the half sheet working out? Do you feel like it rides up on the pad to where you are forced to constantly have to pull it back down? Do you think the full sheet would be better if you were using this in a bivy/ul tent and keeping the whole system installed when packing up each day where you just deflate and re inflate your pad each night? I don’t repack each item in its stuff sack each night I just stuff it all together into my pack, so speed and convenience is key. The weight difference between the two sheets is negligible in my opinion.

Returned the one I bought to wait for the ultralight one but that was with the price labeled as 409 on their website. If I could afford it I would but for now I would go with the cheaper head portion. I would use a different air pad. If I used their pillow I would bring a cotton or silk pillow case to put everything together and leave their red pillow case back at the house. You can carry two cheap light weight air pads and stack them together so they don't move and get great R-value plus a very cushion mattress. You could also carry a large long pillow case and put your air mattress(s) into it to get a home style comfort sleep.

Well, if money weight and compressibility are no option, then you are left with two things to consider. One, do you prefer the fabric in the Core Bed sheet. And two, what feeling do you prefer in your quilts? I own two quilts by the major competitor with DFP above 900 and 7D fabric. Personally, I love a cloud like bed and the new Ultralight will be getting me closer to that experience with added features that surpass the competitor’s. But some people worry about fragile fabrics and prefer beefier materials draping them when they sleep. Maybe think about those things when you compare?

I just bought very similar "sleeping system" from 30€ inflatable mat + 30€ sleeping bag. Aroung 1000g in total. +5C comfort. I think its very similar and low cost. :)

Taking a backpacking trip this summer, but no idea what shoes/boots to wear. Any suggestions?

I’m assuming temperatures aren’t going to be very cold since it’s summer. My advice is: 1. Get one or two pairs of hiking socks. Either a wool blend or synthetic. Hiking socks cost $15-20 per pair. It may seem like a lot if you are used to buying athletic socks, but they will do more to help avoid blisters than your shoes. If you get 2 pairs you can wear one and swap if one pair get wet, while you hang the wet pair on your pack to dry. 2. Wear a comfortable pair of sneakers you already own. 3. If you have to replace your sneakers between now and your trip, consider a pair of trail runners. They are sneakers with a more boot like tread. If this is your only backpacking trip, they will work as everyday shoes outside your trip. Whatever brand fits comfortably is the best for you. An outfitter, or running store can help you select a good pair. 4. Boots aren’t necessary for one backpacking trip, especially if cold temps aren’t an issue. If you get boots, get a pair that’s fairly light weight and comfortable. Get them well ahead and wear them a bunch before your trip. Most boots are stiffer than sneakers, and require a little break in time to avoid blisters.

I use the Zenbivvy light sheet with an Exped pad. As long as the width is the same it's fine.

Ditto Exped down mat UL7 wide. It’s the thickest backpacking mat on the market. Many people comment that they are Rapide users. My feeling is, any pad will work, just take care to order the correct width.

I want to like the Zenbivy sleep system, but it seems like you need a PhD to correctly assemble it each evening. Seems like the simplicity of a nice warm bag and sleep pad are the easy button for hassle free nights on the trail.

I disagree. There is very little hassle. Do you know how to zip your jacket and fix the Velcro tabs at the wrist? The elevation in sleep quality is HUGE with this system. . People need to understand this.

I have the sheet and 10 degree quilt. Honestly it’s a pain to setup. I use the sheet with my EE Enigma. The sheet really is a game changer.

I would say that Zen Bivy has really spent a lot of time and energy making this thing work. They seem to have solved every problem and complaint there is with traditional quilts. However there is way too much clips and loops, and gadgets and $$$$$$$$$$. Oh my. Love my Cloud 20

I like my Cloud 20 too but there is a huge difference in livability with the ZB Light Sheet. Also the SD aesthetics are total crap. I cannot stand looking at my Cloud 20. Been in this game a long long time. Aesthetics matter in everything. ZB is handsome kit. I feel like I’m in Scout Camp in my Cloud 20. Not pleasant.

My problem is really simple but a lifelong major problem. I get extremely claustrophobic in a mummy bag! I’ve just gonna have a custom made rectangular down bag! I know I’m not the only guy in the world with this problem.

900 fill power down makes it more compressible, half sheet vs full sheet saves weight, and pillow clips inside the hood secure the pillow.

The 2024 fast footbox models (all of them!) are 6 inches shorter than the 2023 Fast Footbox models. 2023 was the first year for the Fast Footbox and they simply took the convertible quilt and added a bottom panel. This resulted in a quilt that was longer than the convertible once the convertible's footbox was cinched. To make their sizing consistent, they cut 6 inches off all fast footbox models. This is a shock if bought the ultralight which was launched as being 86 inches long and expected it to be that long. They've updated their online specifications now to reflect the loss of length on the fast footbox models.

Well, I have about 20 nights this winter in my LightBed and I found the full size sheet a tad staticky. Plus the fabric on my pad is wonderful-more comfortable than ZB. I’m looking forward to the half sheet.

I prefer to be less tied into a system and switch components more around. It looks really well thought out, but you're sort of married to them if you wanted to use another quilt or pad. Their 30 inch wide 3D mattress does look interesting for a cold pulk sled trip.

It all looks a little complicated. When I think of a System, I think of something more modular. With multipool configurations for adaptation to a wide range of circumstances. To me a System allows for temps from 70F to -20F. To me it is just one more quilt trying to look like a sleeping bag. I was expecting something based on the modern military MSS. Modular Sleep System. It might work great for some but nothing that meets my Cold Zone 4 or 5 year around needs.

I LOVE the zenbivy system I researched long and hard before buying one I have hated mummy bags my whole life and always bought the square sleeping bags This system is literally everything I wanted!!! I love it’s versatility I love the sheets and the hoods to hold my pillows I have two systems, a 10° core system for cold and a 45° light quilt/in insulated sheet So worth it!!

It's a great system but I wish they would make their straps and hooks glow in the dark. Making it easier to see in the middle of the night.

They probably wouldn't get enough light to glow for any significant amount of time after dark, as you would be taking it out of your pack and putting it into your shelter.
