That is absolutely not true. I’m South African. The Springboks system was nowhere near as well polished. 23, were a far better coached side, because Rassie had a lot more time to prepare for 23. The 19 team were predictable and one dimensional, because Rassie came in, in 2018, they resorted to a very simple and effective system which was classic South African rugby. 23 brought a lot more complex rugby patterns and tactics which had been integrated into the system over years.

Lomu and Habana are probably the biggest debate here because despite being without a doubt the top 2, 11's to grace the game so far (if cheslin keeps playing the way he does he could stake a claim) they are also polar opposites with lomu being the big ball carrying but still surprisingly fast winger whereas Bryan was the most electrifying winger I've layed eyes on. Duane Vermulean! Hang your heads in shame. Conrad Smith was so underrated. Rwc11, no teams could go wide cos his defence was causing turnovers. French in the final would get minimal metres up the middle so take it wide, Smith would tackle whoever it was behind the gain line, and nz would win the breakdown. It was constant. By rwc15, nz had become such an attacking force, Nonu got more attention, and rightly so, but Smith was NZs most important player of rwc11 imo, and was always the rock of the backline while he was there. Anyway, fun game. Do one for rwc87, 95, and 99 next. Yes I'm old enough for opinions on them

Marx way better than Cole. Who was a dirty player that did not carry rugby values. George Smith best #8 ever.

Um ... no. Coles at his peak which was around 2014-2016 was best in the world. Sure he could stir the opposition up, but the guy did the hookers job while passing and running like a back. He was a modern Sean Fitzpatrick. I do love Marx though, no denying his talent. ... and yeah, George Smith was an openside. Robbie Deans moved him to 8 so he could pick Pocock iirc

Just too many goat players from all countries. Best will be to select best ever 15 from each country, who will win in such a goat WC team series? Or best 4 test teams ever, maybe Eng 2003, Boks 2007/2009, AB 2011/15 and Boks 2019/2023, who will win in that goat series of best ever test team? Boks of 1980-84 were also great, but that was the amateur era. O yes, the Gregan Aus team was also great.

To me this refers to the perinial question who was the best player in any given Sport. Especially difficult to agree upon in a team sport, and then compariing players from different erras. Rules, equipment, tactics , cards etc has chanched the game and the type of player to the past England won in 2003- many moons back. To be fair to the players you should not compare them now to the modern day player. Unles ,like this podcast, it is done for a bit of banter. . SO How many soccer player goats from England 1966 soccer team compared to France 2018, and Argentina 2022 lol.

Why are England 03 in this conversation?! They were the best for about 2 years, but you could say the same about SA 07 or one of the WC winning Aus squads…

@jameswyatt4443Ай бұрын
Barrett and Dagg are better. Cullen is living off of easy years in rugby. It’s easy to score when everyone is worried about Jonah.
@katatonickiwi8310Ай бұрын
No he missed 95 by a year, got picked out of position in 99 and not selected 03. John Hart was an idiot. He had the ABs BEST ever back 3 in Lomu Goldie and Cully and he decided to play musical chairs in 99, playing Cully on the right wing, and trying to make him an outside centre during the tournament. Then in the 03 RWC, Mitchell decided that Cully, who was NZs best FB in 03 Super rugby, wasn't good enough, not even as back up when one of the ABs were injured. They selected a player that went on to have a 1 test career.
