Etzebeth was amazing. But I thought that Kolbe played as well as you can play as a wing. If someone who doesn't watch rugby asked me: "What is a winger's job on the field?" I would show them this match and point to Kolbe. Finding space. Making defenders guess. Showing incredible pace on the outside when actually given space. Chasing down a conversion kick (?!?!?). And finally, which I think is actually really not been spoken much about after the game, keeping a lid on an insane attacking winger like Penaud. Even Kolbe couldn't 100% contain him. Any other winger on the day and Penaud would have scored 3 tries on Saturday. Etzebeth was amazing, but Kolbe was sensational.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the springbok team have run battle stats on all teams in the World Cup and Kwagga was the top leading into this World Cup for meaningful impacts. The reason he keeps Kwagga on the bench and brings him on, the opposition are tired and with someone’s battle stats that high they have a higher impact on the game when opposition aren’t at 100%. Watch the movie MoneyBall. He’s taken the principal and adapted it to rugby with a top international rugby team.

I think people don't fully understand how much it means to South Africa. I get it that it was huge for the French, with it being their home WC and them having a good team, but SA lost the voting for hosting the WC in 2023 in very questionable circumstances. Not sure if SA will ever be hosts again (probably because of the money) and anyone who understands what is going on in SA knows how much it means. So I get it, it's tough - but it means as much to every nation.

As a french fan, I am absolutely gutted. We knew that it was going to be a tough match, of course. I just felt like we were the better team on the field, that we played our best rugby, our most beautiful rugby and we lost by one point. To an incredible team, yes, but f*** me, this World Cup, in our country, was so much more than just sport. Our defeat in 2011 by one point against the blacks was tough, but we were lucky to be at this stage in the competition, we weren't that good. I think that right now, this is the best french team ever, even with Ntamack injury. For more than a decade we were shit. There was so much hope, passion... I think that Andy underestimate the traumatism we feel right know. Every person I know that was behind this french team is baffled and hurt. I couldn't find a single friend that could care about the tournament know. We are acting like there isn't a world cup in France right know, complete denial. I wish I could enjoy the semi-finals and the final. I can't, it is too painful, and I think a lot of french fans feel the same... I felt sorry for all the England fans in 2015 even if I'm french and we all enjoy the banter bewteen our nations. I thought that you could show a bit of compassion. Goody, disagree about Kolby. I initially thought no way but the close-up of the wider shot shows Ramos started his approach. The Boks probably analyzed this. However slight, he did indeed start his movement. Perhaps a bit of a flaw in his technique but he has this little movement to the left and the slightly forward before he starts his run. That would be considered part of his approach.

It was as simple as that at school. Very few - with a good excuse - got away with hockey instead. Completely different to the UK - where I finished my education. SA produces so many great players and coaches, as a result.

Both SA and New Zealand have rugby as their number one or number 2 sport and still were only 1 score ahead of France and Ireland who have rugby as a very niche game, especially Ireland, all your best athletes barely beat our posh school kids. But there were no live replays of those incidents. Funny that! And I'll have to disagree with Goodie on the Kolbe charge down. I've seen wide angle and zoomed in replays of Kolbe's charge down, and it was perfection. Kolbe started his run as soon as Ramos started his swaying movement. Yeah, saw the video on IG and disagree with the offside. According to rugby laws, Kolbe was allowed to start his charge as soon as Ramos made his first movement (which can be the "first movement in any direction to begin their approach to kick". I just think Ramos takes too long and Kolbe knew it and took advantage of it. Maybe that's why Dan Bigger does the makarina before he kicks to confuse everyone 😅

The ref not speaking French identified as a problem does not consider the fact that Eng is also a second language for most Bok players. For some including the Bok captain- Siyamthanda Kolisi - , Eng is his third language. Xhosa then Afrikaans then English. By that same logic the ref needed to at least speak Afrikaans or Xhosa also. 😂

"He can't speak French" this the most ridiculous rugby argument ever. So if speaking the native languages of the team a referee officiates then none of the refs would qualify. Can any of the refs speak Fijian, Japanese, Portuguese, Xhosa, Samoan, Tongan, Maori, Spanish, Afrikaans etc??? The French are not special. If other teams can learn to communicate in English then they should too.

Correct me if I am wrong put it is specified until the player make a step, he can lean back and forward but once he make a step it's go time! Also everyone complain about how Etzebeth got the ball and no one is reading the rules that you have to push it forward to be a penalty he clearly did not push it forward so even if it was on the line that is still not forward...

I don't understand what the French are on about? Fine take the 2 points from the conversion and we'll take the penalty for offside right on the goal line when Ben refused to give it. Fine, take away our three points for the Kwagga penalty, we'll take a scrum in your Half that Ben didn't award when our ball hit him (most likely also resulting in a scrum penalty and we have a shot from there). Either way France still lose! Maybe have a dig at Jalibert instead who cost you meters on a touch finder.

To maintain BOK was biased, or incompetent, is tantamount to saying him, both assistant refs, and the TMO group were all complicit in bias to influence the outcome, which is just ridiculous. I mean, did they secretly meet somewhere beforehand? Or were called together by World Rugby officials and briefed on how the decisionmaking must be one-sided, or biased? Good point about the first language communication - just remember English actually isn't the first language for lots of the SA team either. It is certainly something to consider going forwards and I would agree that people should consider the ability of the captain to communicate effectively with the ref. If this means you change your captain or have a player who is always with the captain talking to the ref as an officially recognised 'translator' then that is something to consider. Top teams do ref analysis before each game specifically because the ref can make a huge impact on the game.

Thing is, the people who compile the slow motion replays, who are French btw, made an effort to show footage to the crowd of bad decisions. For instance, a Kwagga Smit turnover where he had his hand on the ground. I think if there was any video evidence of Kolbe setting off early, we would've seen it in the replay. Furthermore, Penaud almost managed a charge down on the previous Sprinbok conversion, and we all saw that he is much slower than Kolbe.

The better team won, in my opinion there is no debate about that. The French had more Runs, Carries over gain line, defenders beaten, offloads and rucks won and they still couldn't convert that into points. Not to even mention having a one man advantage for 10mins PLUS having 20% more possession in the whole game. How much more opportunity do you want? If you need to rely on 50/50 calls from the referee after all of that to win the game then you don't deserve to win, simple as that.

This is a very contentious rule as it states the opposition can start charging down once "the kicker begins to approach the kick". Most of the conversion charge downs you see on KZbin are when the kicker starts their movement with a step backwards. If a step backwards counts as 'beginning the approach', then that means any movement should count as starting the approach. There is ambiguity in the rule and a standard that has been established with kicker starting movements and it's been exploited by Kolbe. This will be debated as long as rugby exists but it was a great charge down by Kolbe.

The French were the ones slowing the game down. Dupont took forever to clear the ball from the rucks. The French also took forever to form the lineouts and other set plays. So not sure why you consider the Boks were slowing it down. Furthermore, the French also employed an old All Black tactic of clearing, driving and /or holding players around the ruck/breakdown area preventing them from defending. Ireland did this as well. They would also "drive" way past the breakdown (also a AB tactic) to prevent a fair contest. It is a form of sealing but comes down to how a ref interprets it. @@malindabrown6882 I get what you're saying about the officials missing some calls, but it's worth noting that both teams had their fair share of 50/50 decisions not going their way. It's all part of the game, and sometimes those calls just don't fall in your favor. France wasn't the sole recipient of unfavorable decisions; in fact, South Africa had a player receive a yellow card and France was still unable to capitalise sufficiently to secure a sufficient lead. It's important to note that even if the referee hadn't missed certain infractions in favor of France, there's no guarantee that these would have led to a French victory. One could argue that if the referee hadn't overlooked infractions committed by France, South Africa's score might have been even higher. However, the game is now in the past, and dwelling on these "what-ifs" won't change the outcome.
