I love how Zanza's composure changes throughout this fight. He begins calm and almost apathetic, viewing you as we would view bacteria, something easily destroyed by simple actions, likely not taking the fight seriously because he believes he can toy with you. He momentarily loses his composure when you break the first vision tag, but he quickly pulls himself together. He begins to get annoyed at having to actually put in effort at the beginning of the second phase, but he doesn't really lose his composure. That all changes when the cutscene before the third phase begins. He is really annoyed by now, and is focusing all of his efforts into defeating you. Then Shulk gets the True Monado, and he finally loses his cool. His battle dialogue becomes increasingly shocked and enraged, and in some of the lines after he gets past half health, he sounds genuinely terrified. And it feels so good to hear this pompous, self-assured monster squirming in terror at Shulk's wrath. It's no coincidence that as compared to the second phase's 600K HP, the third phase only has 300K, while you have a much more powerful weapon than whatever Replica Monado you were using. Takahashi wanted it to feel like a power trip. What really sells it, however, is what comes after you defeat the third phase. At first, Zanza is enraged by Alvis's seeming defection, then when the symbol appears on the Monado, he falls quiet, so terrified that he can only stammer out, "T-that symbol..." and stare at his impending doom. When the Monado slices through him, he finally loses all his rage and terror, and seems resigned to his fate. There's a great comment on the upload of Majesty that goes into more detail about this. It makes you wonder what the symbol could mean. All throughout the game, the kanji that the Monado has had has meant different things. The Monado I's kanji means "machine," and it can only destroy Mechon. The Monado II's kanji means "man," to signal that it can now kill Homs in addition to destroying Mechon. What does the True Monado's kanji mean, then? "God."

No. It's more than that. He realizes too late that he was never the one truly in control; alvis disobeyed and betrayed him, and chose a new god. He probably felt one who existed only to obey him and couldn't be - or wouldn't be - capable of making their own decisions, let alone go against him. Perhaps he always knew who was the real god, and was harshly reminded of that due to Alvis' meddling and giving Shulk the power necessary to vanguish him. And he could nothing but delay the inevitable. Alvis basically had him killed because of zanza was an utter failure of a god. Mayneth was marginally better, but neither were good at their job.

But when Shulk uncovers his Monado, we get the noble sounding “The God-Slaying Sword,” which shows how Shulk was able to tame the Monado

Alvis doesn’t need a Monado because he is Monado. He’s all of them. Monados themselves are a metaphor for the desire and act of changing the future. If I’m correct, it’s implied that Alvis is either the world or reality anthropomorphized. After Zanza’s defeat, he says, “I am Monado. I was here at the beginning. And I will proclaim the end.” In addition, Alvis never concretely aligns with anyone. Sure, he takes Zanza’s side throughout most of the game, but it’s only because Zanza was able to physically manifest his Monado. You can think of this like this: Alvis is like a simulated world and Monados are like a keyboard and mouse. Anyone who wields a Monado can change the world and Alvis simply let’s it happen. XC1's ending is a fever dream of sorts to me, I'd been playing the game up late for multiple weeks in a row and ended up awfully sick. Headaches, runny nose, bad coughs, the bad stuff. Despite that, I got up and binged out the last chapter of this game and I say it was 100% worth it. But damn this song is a good representation of that final moment with the almighty Monado III.

When I killed Zanza, It was Melia who finished the Job with “Summon Earth” SUMMON BLOODY EARTH So basically, Melia chucked a rock at a god, and he died instantly.

It's just more proof that zanza was merely imitating the real thing by taking his theme and "fixing it" to his own preference. I think he knew all along he wasn't the one in charge--best off being friends with the boss of this world after all--but it's sad really. I think he honestly believed alvis to be his friend; a tool incapable of betraying him sure, but he was the only one who knew him in any great length.

The original version of this song sounded fine, but how garbled everything was made it sound way more ominous than a final boss theme should be. This, on the other hand, sounds properly climactic, the theme of a true final battle to determine the fate of the world. It's just a shame that I still beat the boss before the initial buildup ends.

imo this and Irregular Bound are the only downgrades of the battle themes, with this being the worse offender. The vocals shorten all of the syllables which makes them feel very neutered and cut off a lot of the rising tension. A lot of the new tracks shave off the rough edges from some of the tracks, which is good because a lot of them suffer from the crusty guitar and drums drowning out the rest of the song, but on a more orchestral piece like this I feel like the new mixing style doesn't work. The horns that come in at 0:50 sound like middle school band practice, and in general the brass just sounds really goofy and out of place in this context whereas the more muted horns in the original blended really well. Part of what makes the original work for me is how they lean so hard into full-on Dark Souls. It's loud, it's bombastic, and it keeps on ramping up. It feels powerful as all hell and it's so dramatically different from every other battle theme in the game that it really hammers home that this fight will determine the very nature of reality itself, and that Shulk has become a powerful entity in his own right. This just doesn't go hard enough for me.

I've seen a lot of people comparing The God Slaying Sword and After Despair and Hope (final boss theme from Xenoblade 2 if you didn't know), most of whom say the latter is better, but I don't think it's fair to compare the two. The God Slaying Sword sounds like you're coming up against this primal, incomprehensible being (effectiveliy what Zanza is), most clearly in the beginning with the opening drone leading into the flat-tone choir (in the sense that each tone is the same e sound), whereas After Despair and Hope is more like you're fighting someone who's ascending towards being a god (basically [XENOBLADE 2 SPOILERS AHEAD] what Malos is doing trying to activate Aion and destroy the world). They're both fantastic, but they portray different things, so they can't be judged as if they fulfill an identical role to each other.

I beat the shit out of him with Fiora and Melia, while I was Shulk. Everyone got to use their best attacks for the final chain attack.. Fiora used final cross, then Melia used mind-blast, and lastly, I finished him off with Monado Buster. If that's not a cinematic end to a final boss, I don't know what is! What an experience that game was... wow...
