The God Who Goes Unstretched: How a Rebellious Prodigy is Breaking the Rules of CS:GO

Whether you’re repping 4:3, 16:10, or even 5:4, you know that you can’t call yourself an edgy, CS:GO eGamer unless you’re stretchin’ that screen.
But what initially started as a haphazard way to squeeze frames out of a crumby PC has since become a standard. One that virtually every mid-to-high-level headpopper in the whole of Global Offensive follows.
In fact, over the course of Global Offensive’s near decade-long lifespan, very few self-respecting tier-one pros would even entertain the idea of running 16:9. That is, unless you’re CS:GO’s native son - Robin "ropz" Kool.

Ropz is a god who lived in sadness and regret. His family didn't have much at one point and they had to sell their house or something, and then his father killed himself in shame. @@stielimusterman3066 I don't know how it is in Estonia, but in Finland it's common to have doctors prescribe you SSRI-medication for literally any reason and then leave it at that. I was talked into taking it so I would be allowed to continue onto ADHD-tests, which was the whole reason I reached out in the first place, and in my case the SSRI itself made me feel lethargic, depressed and numb. It's actually quite F'd up to feed antidepressants to someone with ADHD as these people often already struggle with lack of focus, motivation and energy.

4:3 doesn't make it easier to hit opponents, it's a placebo for the most part, obviously, placebo makes you play better so it's not like it's a disadvantage, and it does have it's advantages for those who do actually prefer it but in reality, the target is not larger on your mousemat, they just look larger, it makes it easier to see enemies more than shoot them.

Thank you for saying that at the end of the day those are your settings and you do whatever you want with them. It always lowkey annoys me when people obsess about pros' settings; they get their chrossahirs, their sensitivities, their resolutions, graphical settings... why? It's cool if you want to experiment and see what works best for you (and some people can never find the right crosshair too) but ultimately you should be setting everything yourself. You choose the sensitivity that works best for you (plus mouse weight makes a difference so just blindly copying is dumb), you get your graphics the way you can get most fps for most visibility and readability, and the resolution that suits you. I've always been rocking full hd just because of the field of view, I am obsessed with seeing as much as it's possible because in a game so heavily focused on information it's good to see the most you can. Sure, stretched makes the targets fatter and honestly it makes holding tight angles with an AWP a lot easier and that's about the only good thing I see about it; in the cons section you have sensitivity that will feel off as you'll move faster vertically and slower horizontally, less FOV and CS has relatively low FOV anyway, and I find it hard to see people that have the very tips of their heads exposed like standing in CT on dust2 shooting at short A entrance - it's almost as if you see 1 pixel of their heads on stretched and 3 pixels on full hd. So yeah, 3 cons for 1 pro is not enough to justify 4:3 for me. On 16:9 I have the exact opposite, 3 pros to 1 con, FOV is the biggest seller; I have seen too many people lose a round or just die because someone with 16:9 crept up on their 4:3 ass and they didnlt get a chance to react. tl;dr set your own settings instead of copying others, play what suits you and not what other people think is best.

There's like tens - if not hundreds - of examples of these. The thing, though, is that either you're just used to 4:3 stretched as a pro player and since you get paid for playing the game at a high level, you can't afford to "experiment" and potentially be bad and sabotage your career. The random idiots who use 4:3 stretched because they hear that pro players use it etc and then play MM or Faceit or whatever are just braindead apes, and they won't look at the evidence of pro players missing enemies and realize 4:3 is bad, because the fact they use 4:3 purely because of another person means their brains are wired to be sheep instead of think about things objectively and on their own merits anwyay. There is no "objective" way that moving your mouse onto an enemy is somehow better on 4:3. Enemies will be bigger, sure, but I have never, ever had issues with seeing and aiming onto enemies with 16:9, and I used to play 4:3 stretched for a little bit. It's a different feel, but just different, not better in any way, and visibility is an issue for 4:3.

It makes sense that someone is having success with a more standard resolution. If you think about it, stretched, mechanically, is the equivalent of having a lower horizontal sensitivity, instead it seems more natural to us because of warped perspective. A shot doesn't get easier, necessarily. I'd even go as far as to say a good reason a lot of these players do it is well, they're used to it.

The reason stretched res seems to improve your aim is because it alters your X by Y sensitivity. It makes the mouse move faster in the X axis than the Y axis. Since we move the mouse right to left more easily than up and down (because of how our arms/wrists work), we are more likely to make over/under corrections when moving the mouse on the Y axis. Using a stretched res effectively lowers your sensitivity on the Y axis, and since we know lowering your sensitivity allows you to make more precise corrections, it stands to reason that this would improve your aim in a game like CS:GO where there are not a lot of vertical elements (another reason people dislike Nuke). This is not true of other shooters like quake, unreal, TF2, Overwatch etc, because those shooters require more vertical mouse movement.

Stretched does not alter your sens at all. It just makes it feel altered. You're still moving your mouse the same distance as in native res. You just misunderstand.

Pros and cons. 4:3 stretched: +Bigger targets, +More frames per second, -Lower FOV, -lower quality 16:9: +Wider FOV, +Better visuals, -Lower FPS, -Smaller targets 16:10: An in-between of 4:3 and 16:9

The fact that the game slows down helps me in pistol rounds for example, where everybody is moving. The higher fov also helps a lot. It also feel a lot smoother to move around. For me at least 16:9 is better, and i played 4:3 for 1000 hours or so.
