The English term godfather refers to a male person who accompanies and supports someone (in most cases a baby) who gets baptized, often it's a family member or close friend of the parents. In the context of the movie it's the head of a mafia clan, who is responsible for protecting the interests of his organized crime family.

I just loved this reaction, and cannot wait for Naveed and Monsoor to see the second Godfather movie! I think my favorite part is when James Caan breaks the camera at his sister's wedding and throws money at the guy for it. That part was completely improvised by James Caan, and it shows how great an actor he was. Rest in peace, James. Happy birthday, Monsoor, we're both October babies!

Lenny Montana, who portrayed Luca Brasi, was one of many actors in many of America's favorite gangster movies and television shows who had been a real-life gangster. He worked as an arsonist for the mob, either burning down buildings as punishment to businesses that wouldn't pay tribute, or for insurance fraud. Apparently his signature method was to soak a... (ahem) ladies' sanitary product in kerosene, tie it to a mouse's tail, light it, and set the mouse free in the building. Poor mouse!

First, Happy Birthday Mansoor!! Second, Michael was a "college boy" but he had also been a Marine in World War II. When you first see him at Connie and Carlo's wedding, he is wearing his uniform. I read that the medals he was wearing included the Navy Cross Silver Star Navy and Marine Corps Medal Purple Heart. Michael saw some heavy duty fighting so violence wasn't that strange to him.

Glad you both enjoyed this. It's one of my favourites of all time. Like many others in the comments, I look forward to Part II with you both. Francis Ford Coppola had a really hard time making this, almost getting fired, being questioned by the studio on his decision making during shooting, the head of the studio refusing to cast Marlon Brando. It was a nightmare for him, and I'm so glad how it turned out. Both movies turned him into a directing superstar. Happy Birthday, Mansoor. Mario Puzo, the author of The Godfather novels was scouted out by the studio to adapt his books to film with a contract that was backloaded based on the film's success. His agent told him to turn down the offer because Mario had zero prior experience in screenwriting, but he actually needed the money at the time. He won an Oscar for best screenwriting and a second one for Godfather II. Mario said he felt like a fraud because of his lack of experience and said he had no idea what he was doing, but still wanted to continue his career writing scripts in Hollywood. So he went out to buy a book on proper screenwriting and the first chapter said to study the first two Godfather movies. Mario later went on to write scripts for 9 more movies, including the first two Superman movies, starring Christopher Reeve.

Trivia: That cat Brando is holding in the beginning just walked onto the set, Brando picked it up and as the scene started it stayed in. I am among those who consider 'The Godfather' the greatest film of all time....of course the film is about the character arc of the good son turned bad, Micheal.

Good movie Monsoor and Naveed viewed today The God Father. I enjoyed their reaction to it. Now they should see another New York city movie dealing with the gangs in New York called "THE WARRIORS!" It deals with all gangs in New York city have to meet up in city park to hear the RIFFS leader speak on having power over the police and all gangs territories. But a the leader gets shot at the meeting that cause a riot to start and the Warriors are blamed for it. They end up getting chased and fought by every gang in the city back to their own turf the whole night in order to find out what gang really did the shooting of the RIFFS leader. Good movie with good music sound track. The ending song "In The City" was number one on music charts back in 1978!🎥🎞️🎭🎸👍🏻

I’m so glad they loved it! One of the greatest pieces of American film. If you do turn this into a trilogy, I would suggest showing them Godfather III: The Death of Michael Corleone, compared to the original Godfather III. They are the same movie, but The Death of Michael Corleone has scenes that were removed from the original that most people Agee make it a better film. Also, I think they would love Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven. He has always been a favored director of theirs, and besides being a great action movie, it depicts Islam and Christianity during the Crusades, but tries to do honor to both religions.

I'm always struck by the scene where Michael proposes the double assassination of Solozzo and McClusky and is met by laughter and ridicule by Clemenza and Sonny (who calls Michael "college boy"). So easily then is the casual viewer misled to assume Michael's buttoned down, goody goody persona is his true nature. Many forget he was established early on as a decorated, wounded marine corp vet of WW2 Pacific theater. Think Guadalcanal. Guam. Iwo Jima. Bataan. Michael would certainly be no stranger to close range lethal violence and likely would have an enemy kill count in the dozens if not hundreds. The whole college boy act was Michael's first expertly played mask. Notice who didn't join in Sonny and Clemenza's hazing of Michael- Tom Hagen. Canny individual he was, he understood Michael was never just a "college boy "

It's a person who promises to support the parents and child in their upbringing and if the parents were to die, like a car accident, would step in and become the legal guardian for the parents. It's both a secular legal obligation and a spiritual one. It's a back up for the parents. In many ways.
