One of my longtime favourites. The sequel wasn’t terrible either, if a bit more stiff. Still occasionally boot up my PS3 to replay this classic. It’s kinda shameful and upsetting that EA treats these games almost like abandonware when it comes to PC players. Gets really annoying when they have the rights to games like the Godfather and the Sims 2 that they refuse to sell in digital form.

They don't have thr rights to godfather anymore That's why they aren't sold anymore

@@Nebulous_Luna They didn’t sell it digitally when they did still have the rights. Plus I’m pretty sure they have the right to distribute any game they’ve published regardless of where the foundational IP’s rights are, but I’m no copyright lawyer so you could be right. It’s not like they don’t have the rights to the Sims 1/2 tho, but they want to railway people into buying the overpriced expansions to the newer two rather than give people the ability to play the games they grew up with.

the first ones an actually decent attempt to make a Godfather tie-in, the second IMO is much more fun as a game but much much worse as an adaptation of its source, although to be fair, Godfather Part 2 is one of the least videogamifiable movies ever (save some of the Vito bits, its all quiet dialogue and family drama) also, its fine that its abandonware, as long as you know where to look for games like that--myabandonware is the big one, just be on the lookout for the occasional virus. its community reports that stuff in the comments immediately.

@@harrisondarby1333 that’s not how games with licensed IPs work. The publishers contract with the IP holders are only good for so long, they eventually expire and when they do, they need to renegotiate with the owners to sell it again. Games with licensed IPs get delisted all the time

I had this on my 360, and enjoyed being able to sorta insert myself into the story with the character creation, though my dad would always clown me for it. They may call open world crime games from this era GTA clones, but I think a good amount of them have some decent substance to them.
@Lupinia_the_Wolf Жыл бұрын
Me too
@quinnmarchese6313 Жыл бұрын
its also a bit stupid to call these 'GTA-clones' when all they really share is an open world. Saints Row is the closest to an actual clone of GTA, but it has its own ambitions with its customization options, writing, and humor. Godfather does its own awesome business gameplay. Scarface was just downright fun drug king fantasy with its emergent style of gameplay. The Saboteur leaned into its title for gameplay and thusly has a wide array of options for sneaking into German checkpoints and destroying all their shit, not to mention the black and white style. each of these took one thing about GTA and leaned into it and made it great (Saints took gangs from San Andreas, Godfather took businesses, etc). if you count Mafia 2, it wasn't even _really_ open world, but a more guided experience with places you could pit stop in for immersion.
@longlivetheking1065 Жыл бұрын
@@quinnmarchese6313 I disagree that it is stupid. It is similar to FPS games of the 90s being called Doom-clones. If you don't reinvent the genre, especially between the releases of GTA 3 and 5, you are going to be outed for trying to hop on the open world crime game bandwagon. That's just the way it goes when someone invents an entire genre. The Saboteur suffered from absolutely abysmal handling, and the fact that racing was mandatory kind of brought the game way down for me. Scarface had the benefit of feeling better than GTA at the time that it came out, but it is still a movie-tie-in game that was arbitrarily put out years after the film. Saints Row 1 (and even 2 to an extent) are borderline copies of the GTA formula, but SR1 had the benefit of coming before GTA4. The issue with these games is the gameplay loop of causing arcade-y chaos in an open world. That was trademarked by GTA, and thus, even games that share little to nothing else like the Just Cause series, are gonna be in its shadow by default.
@quinnmarchese6313 Жыл бұрын
@@longlivetheking1065 my point was that these games all leaned towards something that either wasn't in GTA at the time at all, or was in GTA but was one of many different parts of it. a lot of them were made unique for it; Saboteur leaned into stealth and blowing shit up, Saints Row leaned into customization and territory ownership, Just Cause obviously hit it big with the grapple hook and parachute and the over the top action moves. GTA at the time might've had some of what each of these games was bringing to the table, but none of these games are "replaceable" by a single GTA game; you'll miss SR's character, The Saboteur's volatility, Scarface's dynamicism, etc. These game prove that you don't need to reinvent the whole genre to be unique and yet some folks will never see them as anything more than clones of GTA, which as i've pointed out is more than a little unfair

Aldo actually does at the start of the second godfather which allows for a power struggle, Michael appoints Aldo's cappo (you) to the boss and allows you to build your own family as you go, it fixes the grind and reward system and you have 3 different places to fly to NYC, Florida and Cuba with much of the same mechanics but polished better, with a slightly wider car option, best tip is just don't upgrade the shotgun but if you want a level 3 gun straight up, burn the hedge by the driveway to get it, I'd say it's definitely worth the play time but a easy 1 day completion if you have a strategy

The game was definitely enjoyable although I do agree that the narrative surrounding Aldo could've been so much better; Like I had this vision that if EA went through the entire Godfather trilogy: I could've imagine Aldo being the Michael Corleone in Part 1, 2 and 3; Frankie being the Kay in Part 1, 2, and 3; Monk I guess being the Tessio? Or perhaps the Fredo in Part 2? And then part 3 have Dominic the main character of the Godfather Part II video game be the Vincent Corelone in Part 3 There was definitely potential to tell a good story as Aldo Trapani but for one reason or another it just completely fell a part and we were just basically ourselves in the Godfather world; which isn't necessarily a bad thing - i just wish the game fleshed that part out a bit more for us to really enjoy it.

I think the Aldo character is intentionally bland and undeveloped to make it easier for the player to self insert themselves onto him. Sorta like a JRPG protagonist. I don't have a problem with the storytelling being the way that it is. I think it just plays beats from the movie to move the plot along, and that's as much story as a game like this needs. The real meat and potatoes of the game is the power fantasy fulfilment you get from slowly taking over the whole place. The melee combat and shooting are both so brutal and satisfying that I never get tired of it.

the psp version called mop war removed the free roaming and made it level based but they also made another game mode called mop war a turn based strategy you can recruit henchmen 3 types outsider and associates and you can even recruit a soldier they can also promote the outsider can promote to associate and the associate gets to be made and the made men can promote into capos capo is the maximum rank you henchmen can achieve you can also send your men to extort businesses and takeover places for the family (which despite everyone had his name picked randomly you still play as aldo) you can use cards every turn to give you some help like you can drive off heat (which can also do it the story if you got heat)
