Fun fact: Aziraphale and Crowley had swapped before they see bookshop and bentley again, that's the reason "Crowley" took a taxi instead. And rewatching those scenes were they pretend to be eachother there's some small details that give away their real identities, like "Aziraphale" giving Gabriel a quick death glare after the "shut up and die" line or the way they both sat in the bench

If you want to cry even more about the song, "A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square" was published in 1940..... aka 1 year before Crowley burned his feet on consecrated ground to save Aziraphale from Nazis and his books from being bombed, and Aziraphale went full 🥹🥰😍❤️‍🔥🍆💕

The reason why Shadwell keep asking about nipples is because according to old texts on witch-hunting you can tell if someone is a witch if they have a devil's mark on the body, usually in the form of an extra nipple
@davidwebb4451
@davidwebb4451 2 ай бұрын
Though what constituted an extra nipple was very open to interpretation by the witch finder eg skin tags, moles etc. These "nipples" or devils teats were supposedly suckled on by the witch's familiar (a demon in animal form, often a cat, which helped the witch perform spells). These devil's marks were also supposed to be insensitive to pain - hence the use of the witch finder's pin to prick the witch and find insensitive areas.

I'm really glad they put the nightingale song in the show, because it is kind of an old song and the fact that the last A & C scene references it went COMPLETELY over my head when I first read the book! Then I watched the show like "This is gayer than I remember, but I'm here for it!"...and then THAT hit and I was like: "Wait - was it like this the whole time? I gotta re-read!" And I did, and realized that Good Omens the book is like...queer coding by cultural reference! Besides the final scene, there's stuff like Aziraphale's bookshop being in Soho (which by US standards would be like putting it in the East Village or SF's Castro district); the Oscar Wilde, DaVinci, and Freddy Mercury references; the way Aziraphale tries to claim he doesn't so much LIKE Crowley as he's become accustomed to his face (My Fair Lady reference)... Plus of course not only does Crowley call Aziraphale 'Angel', book-Aziraphale always calls Crowley 'My dear' or 'Dear boy' - which 100% sound like plausible-deniability pet names!

This Death is a bit different from his Discworld counterpart, though. They have the same author DNA, so to speak, but they have a few clear differences. Most notably, the Good Omens Death is pure duty, no compassion. He's not actively malevolent, but plays his part in the Apocalypse without complaint. Meanwhile, his Discworld counterpart actually rallies his fellow Horsemen to defend humanity when put in the same position. Also, he identifies himself as Azrael, while in Discworld Azrael is Death's direct superior.

Love the reaction! Good catch on the final song, btw! I absolutely love the symbolism of Crowley and Aziraphale leaving the garden in the ending (the park they were in before the Ritz). They told us in the first episode "It starts, as it will end, with a garden"! And like Adam and Eve, Crowley and Aziraphale are leaving the garden (Heaven and Hell) to be in the world. Funny how in the beginning they both don't know the difference between good and evil (they wonder it and then they decide if an angel do something must be good, and if a demon do something else must be bad), and then after 6000 years finally they know the difference and so they leave the garden like Adam and Eve after the apple. Idk, I love the symbolism! It's perfect.
@t.read6906
@t.read6906 2 ай бұрын
The nightingale is love!! In fact symbolically, the nightingale is almost always poetic, romantic love which needs to hide itself, because nightingales sing beautifully and in the night time (when lovers can meet secretly). For example in Romeo and Juliet at one point they have a little argument over whether the bird they can hear is a nightingale (so it’s still night and they can stay together a bit longer) or a lark (so dawn is breaking and they need to separate so they aren’t spotted- incidentally larks return to the same nest on the ground every night, so they can symbolise both marriage and resurrection/going to and returning from heaven, so the lark being a bad thing foreshadows how their marriage gets torn apart by their families’ feud). The exception is when, for Greek myth reasons, nightingales can symbolise mourning.

Hey, please, consider the fact, that season one completely covers original book, made by two really great authors very elaborately. Season two is kinda bonus thing, while being still quite good, cause one of said authors made the script and used some of their old ideas there - but still, unfortunately, Terry Praychett is unreplaceble, and the plot is much more raw in general
@YarolYarol

The majority of Season Two is Neil Gaiman's work and ideas with very little Terry Pratchett, that said, he said it was necessary to get to season three, which does have a better balance of Gaiman and Pratchett's work and ideas (and hopefully the cottage in South Downs. 😄)

39:20 omg yes 100%!!! The song choices in this show are so on point. Can I also point out the song You're My Best Friend by Queen when Crowley is driving to the bookshop (before he sees the fire) like not only does the song fit them so well but also the fact that not even 2mins later Crowley is shouting "somebody killed my best friend" and only when he realises Aziraphale potentially died does Best Friend become Somebody to Love. It makes me go absolutely feral every time! In summery, the Bentley knows what's up fr. Also you should totally read the book! I struggle getting started with books quite a bit normally but the rhythm and comedy of the book make it so easy to get into. The only thing I'd say is that there's a lot of British (well actually more just English ig rather than all of Britain?) -specific jokes, but the footnotes addressed to Americans and other overseas readers are absolutely hilarious and a lot of my non UK friends absolutely adored the explanations they wrote. 10/10 recommend!

The nightingale song reference DOES come straight from the book! From the book first published in '91, and isn't that wild. Thank you for the ride! I love how scrupulous you are, you helped me catch some things that may seem obvious in hindsight, but I guess I just didn't stop to breathe and appreciate them specifically at the time (every time) I read/watched Good Omens, because it's so packed with wonderful brain-tingling things. For instance, when you pointed out Adam (Young) talking about the apple being worth the trouble, I was like "Damn! I swear I appreciated this moment at some point, it's so Pratchetty, but then I just forgot about it. How lovely!" Good luck with season two!

The book ends with the Adam/garden/apple scene, and the nightingale scene comes prior to that (maybe not the scene right before but it's one of the other wrap-up scenes). The order was changed on the show to end with Aziraphale and Crowley (and go into the credits song).

I love John Hamm in his role. He is a character who just follows the rules and does all the right things, but I like that the story twists how such a character can be an antagonist. I like having good characters go against other good people. I also want to talk for a moment about Neil Gaiman and Sir Terry Pratchett. Those two were massive bros in real life. I mean joined at the hip, Adam and his pack of friends level bros. Before they wrote Good Omens, I believe I remember reading something about Neil saying being asked to work with Sir Terry on a piece was like being asked to work with Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel. Sadly, Sir Terry passed away in real life before Good Omens was brought to the screen. Neil said his friend told him, "''You have to do this because I want to watch it before the lights go out, and you’re the only person who has the same care and love and passion for the old girl that I have’. I was basically saying okay and then he died, which made it a last request." According to Neil, if anything had to be cut from the show, it was his own material from the book because he wanted Sir Terry's contributions to be seen first. On the premiere, they reserved a front row seat with Sir Terry's signature hat. Here's hoping on some level Sir Terry managed to see what his friend made for him.

This show has SO MANY details and easter eggs (like the songs) and is VERY good at describing the hypocrisy of religion (Terry Pratchett always wrote about subjects like these and I will never stop loving his works and the love he put into Good Omens). Also fun facts that I think other people already told you : Aziraphale and Crowley exchanged "places" before getting this stroll in the park, you can see it when Crowley, in Aziraphale's form, goes to the bookshop and smiles but also doesn't remember certains books (probably cause Aziraphale bought them while he wasn't here and to make even more sweet, that means Crowley knows HOW MANY books Aziraphale has), Aziraphale in Crowley's form smiles sweetly when he sees the car cause he knows how much it means to Crowley. There are also lots of little details while they "innocently" take they ice creams : Aziraphale stays softer and Crowley still a bit snarky but they know each other so well they can fools angels and demons. When the demons judge who they think is Crowley, he is much more gentle and says things like "Oh well there is no reason to do that", while Crowley upstairs GLARES at Gabriel so much and even let out a tiny smirk. Also, linked to the first time they met, it is theorised (by a lot of the fandom I understand) that Aziraphale protected Crowley against the first rain cause it was holy water. And in the last scene we see of them too, you can see the "wing" of the grand piano doing a similar thing. There are so much more details and theories I could go on but just, those two are AMAZING and don't worry, you are not alone cackling each time Adam says "You're not my dad !" (This whole scene is so powerful for so many reasons too : adoption, reject of "destiny", the fact that kids are the future and the ones that change things...)
@clarestubbs9303

Crowley as Azi saying "Well they're new" about the books is because Adam has restored the bookshop and added the 'Just William' books probably because he likes them. It's actually the opposite of what you thought. Crowley knows the bookshop so well that he realises that these books are new! Azi as Crowley gets a taxi because it's Crowley's car and he knows Crowley wouldn't like him driving it. (He can drive btw, we find that out in season 2) Another clue that they have swapped faces (I didn't click on the first watch, but now it's SO obvious!) is Crowley's little nose scrunch when he's in the holy water bath. That is Azi acting as how he sees Crowley!

Yeah, that was about my reaction as well when I first looked up the lyrics to A Nightingale Sang in Barkley Square. Like, it is LITERALLY a love song. And yeah, alas no nightingales over here in North America, they're a European bird (in fact only one member of their family is found over here, the Northern Wheatear, and that only lives like, Alaska and Yukon).

When I first watched season 1 I thought "these men are such an old couple, how are they not together in a romantic sense?" It just makes my gay heart happy, glad there's gonna be a season 3! Can't wait for your season 2 reactions! Also I think since you love this show, you'd love Our Flag Means Death. It's about pirates but it's one of the gayest shows I've ever seen

Just have to say that I read "Here we come!" in Aziraphale's voice and mentally did the finger twirl gesture he does when he says that (end of season 2, episode 4). LOL

Did you notice Aziraphale taking Crowley's hand when they were sitting down in the bus? Very sweet (or possibly that's when they swapped bodies?). Please do Season 2 - although prepare yourself, it is quite a ride.

Your words of "This show is about people interpreting things diffrently than others depending on the who they are," rings very much true. I'd say, this is what the show is trying to teach us. Because in the end, "People are just fundamentally people." Also, dude, DUDE-- See you on season 2... you're are going to Love it. I know I am :)
