I havent read the books or played any games in that realm, but of all the Pantheons available in the game, this pantheon is my favorite. I like pantheons being unique to D&D and not interpretations of known, historic pantheons of the real world. Mishakal seems like the go-to diety for healers, but I can see a Divine Sorcerer or Zealot Barbarian choosing that diety or branch of Gods.

@@DLSaga Regular astronomers on Krynn use the method you describe (they look for missing stars and other celestial bodies which are ostensibly being obscured by the Black Moon Nuitari, which they can't see, in order to track its position). The Wizards of the Black Robes, being directly patronized by the god Nuitari, can actually properly see the moon that is his celestial body/representation. I imagine this makes it easier to track the black moon's phases, and the corresponding waxing and waning of their magic.

I find it completely hard to believe that Takhisis is truly dead in Krynn, but merely incapacitated indefinitely. Babylonian mythos on Tiamat does indicate she must eventually die to form a new world. But it's odd that no such thing happened in Forgotten Realms, when it came to Tiamat.

@@DLSaga I've always felt that if a movie trilogy of the 'Dragonlance Chronicles' was ever made, it should be bookended throughout with scenes of Astinus in the Great Library of Palanthis. I like how after the War of Souls, the gods decided they had had ENOUGH of Takhisis' bullcrap and just de-defied her. And Paladine was perfectly happy to go along with it. On a more serious note, I really like gods of Krynn; they're not my favorite DND religion (that honor goes to the various faiths of Eberron, plus the gods of Pathfinder, and I might declare a tie between the gods of Krynn and the Immortals of Mystara), but they are interesting. They're fleshed out, and despite appearances, there's some hidden nuance in the cosmology of the world, such as the odd demigod(s) or the contradictions in various stories (did Reorx shape the universe or did the High God do it themselves? Did the High God create the oldest gods or "call" them from somewhere else?), the three-way battle for influence over the mortal world, and most recently how Mina has decided to put herself outside the normal pantheon system and is just doing her own thing (I like to think it's all least in part because after Takhisis' manipulations, she was just left soured to the whole thing). The Evil Gods are kind of interesting because of the subtle nuances of certain individuals. Like how they were described as originally wanting to control the mortals to make them great, which implies they weren't originally "evil," but actually wanted what they thought was "best" for mortals. We can even interpret their "gift" of hunger and thirst as something to motivate mortal ambition and innovation (especially if you think of it as a hunger for power rather than for sustenance). Likewise, some of the gods ae willing to be occasionally less than pure evil: Zeboim is worshipped by non-evil nations for protection when crossing the sea, and it seems she sometimes gives it. Sargonnas meanwhile fought alongside his long-time enemy Kiri-Jolith to save the world. And ALL of them agreed with the other gods that they were done with Takhisis.

I love the names of all the gods, but the that always strike a a chord in me are those derived from Hebrew, and the one i always thought derives from Hebrew: Habbakuk (Chavkuk the prophet), Chislev (Kislev, the third/ninth Hebrew month), and those that just make sense, Mishakal (especially with the context of discs), and Chemosh (in the context of his realmw of sovereignty, especially death). Zivilyn sounds like a slight change from Zevulun/Zvulun, one of the patriarchs of the 12 tribes of Yisrael. Hiddukel was written in the Hebrew translation as חידוקל, which adds only one letter to the words חידקל, the name of the Tigris river in the bible. These always jumped up to my mind when i researched a bit about DL.

Favorite: Chemosh because my first D&D character was a homebrew vampire mage. Although I also played paladins so Kiri-Jolith is up there for me too. Question: I can't actually remember a time when the neutral gods sided with evil against good. It seems that Takhisis has always been scheming and Gilean has been working with Paladine to stop her. Is there a time when Gilean actively opposed Paladine? Also, I'm not sure if this is canon or not, but do you know if the other continent in "The Dark Queen of Krynn" game had different names for the gods? There's "Ersteem" for Takhisis, but there is also "Hith" who I can't figure out if it's another name for Chemosh or Hiddukel and "Myslaxa" who is presumably either Paladine or Mishakal.
@DLSaga
@DLSaga Жыл бұрын
The game went to Taladas. It was a boxed set TSR released for AD&D2e. It’s definitely canon. The gods do have different names but you can figure them out as you have for some. I believe Gilean sided with Takhisis in the end Age of Might when the Kingpriest was going crazy and in the Summer of Flame when the Knights of Takhisis took over Krynn to give order and fight Chaos.
@djbslectures
@djbslectures Жыл бұрын
@@DLSaga Thanks. Regarding the end of the Age of Might, I think Paladine also was disgusted with the Kingpriest, so all the gods (even Takhisis) were joined. Also, Paladine was opposed to Chaos in summer flame, although I can't remember the details then. I guess my point is that I like the idea of the goal of balance, but it seems that Paladine also is always trying for balance too: my reading is that Paladine sees balance as "good". I don't know of any time that Gilean opposed Paladine.

You say its Abrahamic but it reminds me more of the babylonian Enuma Elis. Tiamat(Tahkisis) IS the primordial chaos in Babylonian creation myth. Conversely, Paladine is best represented by Anu, wwwaaayyyy more-so than any kind of Abrahamic interpretation could be rendered. He(paladine/Anu) is the head of a pantheon.......in the Torah(Jew here) YHWH is best represented by the "Shema" ~"Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the LORD is One" no pantheons. More than 21.... High God is an Overpower like Ao. Chaos was another overpower. Ionthas, Takhisis first mate who was trapped in the Greygem. Mina, the secret daughter of Mishikal. Artha, the daughter of Takhisis and Hiddukel. Raistlin did become a god, and due to the River of Time is out there. Likewise in another branch, the Kingpriest became a god as well after trapping all the dieties. Plus there are the interloper gods.... Llolth and Cyronax. Morgion is also not a true god, but a planar demon lord Anthraxas.
@DLSaga
@DLSaga 2 жыл бұрын
I am familiar with some of that when they restructured the lore in Fifth Age, do you have other references?

@@DLSaga Wow. Thanks for responding. So the first two demigods popped up in 2E AD&D, within the New Tales: Land Reborn adventure... and the 1E AD&D In Search of Dragons, Dragon Magic, and Dragon Keep. Apparently Takhisis tried to seduced Chemosh, but was fooled by Hiddukel. She gave birth to Artha and Malfesus. So that a +2 to the evil pantheon. Lolth is mentioned as an interloper god in the 2E Wild Elves product concerning the Drow who crashed on Krynn. Since Krynn is a closed world, Lolth was forced to serve as a Handmaiden to Takhisis and to add insult to injury.... forced to serve in a form of a Kender. I believe this was punishment for creating Dragon Spiders. +1 to the Evil Pantheon Beldinas Pilofiro, the Kingpriest of Istar is an ascended god like Raistlin. In the book "Dragons of Chaos: There is another Shore..." story talks about a separate timeline in which the Kingpriest killed/shackled all of the gods and took there power. So Zivilyn is keeping some of the alterflows of the River of Time active....or can't close them off. +1 to the overall total Likewise, Raistlin Majere, is a deity in his own right. He did defeat all the gods of Krynn... and even though in a timeline he choose not to do so.... he still exist and possibly influences himselves. Much in the same way the Kingpriest is a god.... +1 to the overall total. The next comes a revelation from the War of Souls Trilogy, apparently before when creation first began there was Paladine, Gilean, and Ionthus. Takhisis was just a consort, and didn't assume leadership of the Pantheon of Evil until Ionthus mysteriously vanished. Apparently he allowed Reorx to trap him instead of Chaos and was imprisoned in the Greygem. +1 to the Evil Pantheon. The last god is of course Mina. The secret child of Paladine and Mishakal, who was corrupted by Chemosh. She is a part the +1 neutral pantheon, as she neither stands with her parents or is influenced by Chemosh/Takhisis. The Astral Dragon, a pair of primordial dragons in 1E AD&D Dragon Magic and Dragon Keep. They are the progenitors of the first dragons. They are technically an unaffiliated deity, and one that is secret to most individuals.

@@DLSaga The others are Achromentals... there was a short story in one of the "anthology" series that mentioned Cyrnoax.... that was worshiped by a group of goblins I think. The main Elemental Lords are gods in their own right, but I think they are forced to defer to Krynn's gods. In the story, Cyronax quickly bowed before another krynnish god that appearred and left. One thing I noticed from the Tales of the Lance Box Set, with some of the cultural/racial god's names is that certain gods may be existing gods from elsewhere. Paladine and Takhisis for a long while have been considered to be be Tiamat and Bahumat. There are a few references such as Sargonnas, Chemosh, and Mishakal might hail from the Mesopotamian/Akkadian Pantheons just as Takhisis and Paladine do. Morgion as one of titles suggest is a Daemon Lord known as Anthraxsas. So possibly the only native gods to Krynn are Lunitari, Solinari, Nuitari, Habbakuk, Kiri-Jolith, and Zeboim. Apparently there is also a mention in of the game books, that other gods answered the call of Paladine and Takhisis.... but not everyone stayed. Chaos and the Highgod are still somewhat of a mystery. Chaos is defiantly mentioned in story of the Greygem, and we know Reorx and Paladine recognize his name. However, it is Ionthus. The Highgod is referenced as the Irda new of him. Again it is a puzzle as could Chaos/Highgod all be Ionthus? Is there a hidden story there somewhere. Especially which is odd is that there seems to have been two Krynns at one point. One was seemingly destroyed during the Age of Starbirth, and another created afterwords in which we all know. The last mystery is the 5th Age Krynn.... where in the multiverse did Takhisis move it too. We only know that it is the home system of Khellendros. We can only assume that nearby is his original world.... and what other gods where present on that world?

In Dragons of Summer Flame it was Takhisis's idea to lie to her siblings about having permission from the All Father to create the world of Krynn and bring order to chaos. They required the assistance of the outside God named Reorx who's must have come from another plane of existence. I liked how the balance of the three magical moons is what maintains order rather than having to be good in order to be morally satisfied. The children made by Takhisis believe that they are not evil, the are not fighting for the same outcome as humanity. All three alignments desire to have legitimate power.
