The Gold of Thrace: the Panagyurishte Treasure

Join us for a talk on the extraordinary Panagyurishte Treasure from Bulgaria, found by chance in its namesake town by three brothers in 1949.
This banqueting set dates from around 300 BC and is comprised of nine richly-decorated gold vessels. Considered a national treasure, it's a fine example of the rich archaeological heritage of ancient Thrace (which was split across present-day Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey). The Panagyurishte Treasure is a star loan in the exhibition Luxury and power: Persia to Greece - book tickets to view these stunning objects up close.
At this special event, Prof Boni Petrunova, Director of the National Museum of History in Sofia, Bulgaria, discusses these exquisite objects along with other treasures discovered in Bulgaria, providing a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of the country.
This event is presented in partnership with the National Museum of History, Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Embassy in London.

Good presentation! Thank you to the British Museum for the good footage and putting it up on YT! This is important to our small unpopular country. No war talk, no criticism of the format. It was fine just the way it is. Some people need to hear a foreign language once in a while.

Hi Josh, the original talk was live and the audience was made up of a mix of Bulgarian and English speakers so we wanted to cater for both. We generally provide subtitles on our online content for anyone who benefits from them including those who are D/deaf or hard of hearing so that is the reason why the English language now has subtitling.

How exasperating that so many Europeans (not all) yet again ignore the fact that we’ve witnessed many struggles between “good and evil” in the form of invasions and genocides over the last 100 years, before the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. I don’t support Russia, but it’s painfully obvious why some of y’all only pay attention to the Ukraine and ignore the plight of people other oppressed/invaded/militarized areas. A modicum of interest is paid when there’s a threat to performative democracy, capitalism, or a westernized way of life in an area that’s getting bombarded with imperialist bullshit, but that attention wains quickly when there aren’t faces of little blond haired blue eyed children to parade on the news. If the kids that are starving or getting killed by bombs are a darker skin tone, the west inherently places lesser value on their lives, and less attention overall. It’s 2023.
