Their books had gone downhill before OGL debacle was even announced. I don't know how they can't follow the same formula Paizo has developed for releasing books it just makes so much sense. Every "Season" 1) Release an adventure path players and GM's can get excited about and get your community jazzed to play. This AP should have some kind of unique interesting thing that pulls players and GM's back to play. 2) Build your marketing around it and theme all your branding around it 3) Release a setting book to support the new AP for that season 4) Release a player options book to support the new AP with unique player options specifically for the AP or Setting that season 5) Theme your organized play around this seasonal theme 6) Profit. They sort of had this going for a while, and somehow lost it with all these weird partial garbage combined setting AP books that don't really tell a complete campaign arc. Also, many of their adventures really aren't that good as written, even the "good" ones like Strahd and Out of the Abyss only really reach their full potential with heavy community modding.

Nah fam, the "Golden Age" was TSR. That being said, my goodness this was a wonderfully worded and well-thought video. The effort and the production is simply phenomenal and you presented it in a clear, concise manner that didn't take 45 minutes to make your point. Always remember the immortal words of Blizzard: "No King rules forever." and of course we all saw how that turned out. I'm not really sure why I was suddenly recommended this video - but you have absolutely earned a new subscriber in me! Keep up the great work man! And as a side note, that animated desktop background of the creepy castle on the hill in the rain is pure awesome! I wish I knew what it was from. Also: Praise the Emperor!

I was getting a bit bored of D&D 5e as a DM late 2022. Then with the OGL, I made an active decision not to buy any new WotC products. Since then, I have decided not to start any new D&D campaigns. I'm continuing a Campaign that I started in early 2022 under 5e rules. But I am very seriously considering changing to PF2.1e when the new books come out. Any new games or one shots I've ran in 2023 have been other systems, CyberPunk, Shadowrun mostly. I have been considering the idea of finding 4-5 other forever GM's and have a rotating GM group. Each person runs their own system of choice.

I dig those drone shots. Looks like quite the nice place where you are living there. Also thanks for the shoutout to Shadowrun ;-) It isn't strictly a space-setting though. Yes, it CAN go there, but it very, very rarely does. Sub-orbital flights at most. Because all the space-infrastructure is so very heavily secured that it is almost impossible to get there. Your average runner doesn't just walk - or float - into the Zurich-Orbital. Heck, even the very best are beyond loath to do that - because they know the risks.. But if it is a space-setting you are after, I would recommend the old Alternity-system. Discontinued for over 20 years at this point unfortunately, but the books are still out there. and with it you have the framework for roleplaying on various levels of tech ranging from Stone age all the way to Space Opera and Trek-levels of technology. Edit: Way to make a point about old things still being enjoyable past their prime by booting up the old Dawn of War. Gosh, that brings back memories. Waaay back in the day when GameSpy was still a thing during the development of DoW, I got lucky enough to be picked as one of the beta testers. Gosh, how long ago is that now? Also gotta be near 20 years at this point.

Best current Scifi in space systems (according to me, comment section poster): Starfinder: D20. Pathfinder in SPACE. Lots of feats and classes, lots of published material. Relies heavily on Adventure Paths. Mongoose Traveller 2e: 2d6+Stat. Best version of one of the OG space games. Much lower progression curve then D&D, but has an excellent character gen system where players start as cadets and then make decisions (and gamble on stat progression) before their character retires and becomes a traveller. There is piles of material for the game because it's compatible with all of the Traveller stuff put out over the decades. Honorable mention to the cepheus system OGL for a similar experience at a far cheaper pricepoint. Mothership: D100 roll under. Indie darling scifi horror. Class based, high intensity sessions where character death is always on the table. Extremely cheap to get into, has an extremely active fan community. Stars Without Number: D20. Plays like a mashup of 1e DND and classic Traveller. Core rules are free online. Comes with an extremely versatile planet generation system. Leans toward harder scifi, combat is extremely lethal for players and NPCs alike. Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells: D20 roll under. Zany mashup of Star Wars style genre roulette with 90s ultraviolence, tied into a "roll between" system that prevents stat bloat. Has the most versatile space magic system of the bunch. Excellent world and monster generation rules.

Surprisingly what turned me off from Dungeons and Dragons this year is that the OGL and the growth in popularity of solo-ran TTRPGS such as what's covered on the channel Me, Myself and Die, Swords and Solitude and Solo Dungeon Master since 2020 has made me realise that I only enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons for the social aspect, hanging out with friends and having a day playing a game. On it's own, I had no interest in the fantasy setting and the concept of using indie material to completely change the game to a new setting, rules system etc. made no sense because if I changed everything about DnD then why play DnD? Why not make my own system? I didn't, I'd bought the Call of Cthulhu books for Halloween and now I play those solo because the world genuinely interests me and even if I can't find a group to play with, the passion is still there to play alone.

Opening Dawn of War at the end of the video is a nice touch. Games Workshop has had many more controversies than WotC in regards to their own Warhammer IP (both in 40k and Fantasy versions), but the old Dawn of War 1 is still a good, enjoyable game despite being a product of an old era and tied to one of GW's IPs. You are still allowed to enjoy it, just as you are allowed to enjoy DnD in its many iterations and forms as well.

Honestly, we were NEVER in a GOLDEN AGE! We were in a Age of Broken Boundaries with D&D! The TSR days were plagued with BS from not just the Societal scene, but also from behind the curtain when a majority of their Creators and CEOs were either bickering, fighting, or actively sabotaging each other! The Transfer to WOTC was arguably both good and bad, but at the same time it has worked out in their favor pretty damn good. But Ultimately D&D created the Adventure Table Top Genre, and that’s what’s ultimately remembered about D&D! It helped to Spawn a lot of creative minds to Make stuff like COC, Cyberpunk, Dungeon World, and So Much More! Even stuff based on existing Franchises! So even if Dungeons and Dragons did die, it would still live on in a Metaphorical sense. But I regardless of how people feel, There is still enough content to run Games for D&D. 5E is not the Worst system, sure, may not be as Crunchy as 3E or 3.5E, but it can grow, and taking elements of certain systems and using it in 5E can improve a game, you just gotta ask if your players are into that. But Honestly, I’m fine with playing this game, I will always defend playing this game, because there is so much to gain. Sure, there are other games. I’m currently investing time into learning how “Fabula Ultima” TTRPG works, and I love it due to my love of the “Final Fantasy” genre. Which we can also thank D&D for inspiring into existence with the likes of Wizardry! :)

My brother, the Golden Age of Dungeons and Dragons ended when WotC took over the brand and reprinted the 2E content without the high quality art. We're 25 years into the game having less artistic direction, more roll-dependence, and less role-relevance. We're at the end of the plastic age of D&D, not the end of the golden age.

I would call this the silver age of dungeons and dragons, because I'm pretty sure the golden age has already been claimed. I personally think its been going downhill for a bit, but WotC compounded that by doing three things simultaneously 1. Massive decrease in quality 2. Announce a new edition of DnD 3. And the whammy, piss off your entire fan base, turning people who were playing other systems from a vast minority to being widespread, and also causing all of everyone's favorite 3pp to publish things in a different system (often one of their own creation) With all of this happening at the same time, especially with as you mentioned raising prices on books I agree we are going into a new TTRPG renaissance, without wizards of the coast. To put into perspective how bad the WotC brand name is, when my group went to look at other systems and found that Pathfinder 2e wasn't to our liking, instead of reverting to 5e we went back to playing Pathfinder 1st edition (the vote was between Pathfinder 1e, GURPS, and Shadowrun, Pathfinder 1e was the only system we had all played in more than one campaign of so it fairly easily won that competition)

I am surprised at the sheer number of people though who remain DnD loyal, no matter how many times WOTC insults them, spits into their faces, and gives them crap products. Like battered spouse syndrome, "they love WOTC" not matter how poorly WOTC treats them. There are good companies that make good games, that slip between the cracks in favor of bigger companies. Gaming companies like Troll Lord Games with the Castes & Crusades system (Great because you can still use all of your 5e stuff with it) or Goodman Games and the host of systems that they make stuff for.

@@danielramsey6141 that doesn't fly in 2023. You are literally using the internet to comment about how people cannot get literally any other option than WOTC or DnD when you can, with that same internet, get any game system in the entire world sent directly to you. Hell, most alternative game systems also deal both in physical and PDF copies of their works, the latter of which are cheaper because they cost less to make. Unlike WOTC who will charge you the same price for a very limited digital access are their site only as they do for their poorly made books. So, instead of doing anything people would rather remain with a company that treats them like crap because they are afraid to try something different or they are brand boys. @@archersfriend5900 I haven't purchase Nike in decades entirely because of their use of what amounts to slave labor, then jacking up the prices for a name. But it also does apply that people will continue to support a company that insults or craps all over them simply because of being "brand loyal" or wanting the name attached to it. In TTRPGs it is really a mix of "brand loyal" and fear of change. People will twist 5e to be anything and everything instead of actually getting a game built from the ground up to be that thing they are looking for. So, WOTC spits in their faces, pisses in their beds, pours sugar in the gas tanks, and they still hand over their money to them.

There’s 2 main issues I have with your arguments regarding D&D. First, yes there are tons of different tabletop role playing games that can do specific styles of gameplay well (like Call of Cthulhu for example as you mentioned). But this is not really as damaging against D&D as you might think. The main thing which has kept D&D as popular as it has been especially with 5th edition is it’s probably the most simplified and easy to understand TTRPG currently out there. Pretty much anyone can learn the system basics in about half an hour and be able to play the game relatively well. This compounds with the fact that D&D encompasses every genre out there as it’s meant to be a catch all brand. It’s got horror, sci fi, classic fantasy, political intrigue, puzzles, pretty much anything you can think of. A lot of other systems simply don’t have this, and most people in my experience do not want to spend the money and take the time to learn an entirely new system for each genre of game, as D&D is already considered relatively complicated compared to other game systems. Hell, even getting my friends to try and play starfinder which is very similar to D&D was like pulling teeth. Secondly, you have to remember that D&D has been the face of tabletop games from day 1. Brand recognition is extremely important and there isn’t a single other system that is nearly as popular. Sure WOTC can be a shitty company but when has that ever truly affected sales in any significant way? Look at gaming companies like EA or Blizzard. Doesn’t matter how much shit they shovel in peoples mouth, as long as they stay popular and keep making big title games they will still be massively profitable companies. Even when talking about more similar situations like card games we run into the same cold hard facts. There have been a million different card based games over the years and yet Magic the Gathering is still consistently the most popular. It’s been that way for a very long time and it’s going to stay that way until/unless the company goes under and if it ever does it will be long after all the smaller card game companies do. Long story short, if D&D enters a dark age it will mean ALL TTRPG games will be entering a dark age.

I...completely disagree with everything here. D&D 5th is in no way the easiest or simplest TTRPG out there. Right off the bat, anything Powered by the Apocalypse is much simpler. FUDGE is a very straight forward and completely modular system that allows you to play exactly how you want to play. The issue I have had is specifically when teaching people who started out learning D&D. When they come from a background of only playing D&D, players tend to not want to learn new systems, and so teaching them anything else tends to be met with push back and reluctance. But every time I've taught someone to play TTRPGs from scratch, where they've never played before? I've always had an easier time teaching something like OVA, DCC, or Kids With Bikes. It's not the complexity that makes it hard to teach new systems, it's the sunk cost fallacy. As for the "It has everything that a lot of other systems don't have", let me again direct you to games like: FATE, FUDGE, GURPS, RIFTS, and OVA, game systems that are meant to be molded to fit exactly what you need. Want to play a horror survival? Easily done in all of these systems, including D&D. Want to do a purely political campaign of back-stabbing and sabotage? I'd recommend FATE or FUDGE over the others, but, everything here could do it, including D&D with some modifications and if you ignore a significant portion of class features. Want to play a high-school romance slice-of-life? I'll take literally any of the other systems listed here over D&D. D&D is not designed for everything. It's designed for Adventures and quests, tales of heroics and combat. But it isn't designed for stories about racing supped up racecars in space. It isn't designed for running scared in a collapsing city as two Kaiju fight for supremacy. And in the instance of Wizard's shitty decisions affecting sales in a significant way? It already has. I work in a game store, and D&D has been gathering dust on our shelves as more and more people are buying other RPGs. I have conversations with people almost every day about how they are looking to get into different RPGs, about how they've been meaning to try out Pathfinder and with everything going on with WotC/Hasbro, now is the time to change. I've seen more people leave Magic: The Gathering this year than I have seen in five. Not to mention during the OGL debacle, so many people canceled their D&D Beyond Subscriptions that Hasbro couldn't not notice. There is only so much straw you can pile on the camel's back, and when it breaks, that camel isn't getting back up. People are already fed up with WotC/Hasbro, and have been complaining for a while. We're reaching the point where it becomes easier to jump ship than continue course. Again, it's the sunk cost fallacy at play here.

For people living in the heart of the entire, their golden age is rich and decadent. For those living in the surrounding countries, it's a war-torn hellscape. Only the failure of the empire can bring freedom to the ttrpgs.😊

I agree basically with everything you said but i don't see that Dimension 20 are locked into D&D. Their campaigns are short and that gives them room to manoeuvre very easily. If they want to play then next campaign using Pathfinder or Candela Obscura rules i doubt most of their viewers would care . Their fans tune in for laughs and drama with their supurb players and GMs not for how to play D&D tutorials.

I see where you are coming from with the "others can't switch, only CR can" point, but I kind of disagree. Most actual play media (podcasts, livestreams, etc.) seems to be mostly personality-driven and the ruleset is important ... but not the main draw. The retention-rate for them is quite low if the audience just doesn't jell with the performers and their style - but if the ruleset isn't quite theirs, most will gloze over this if they are having fun with the rest of the product. Personally I would love if D20, Dungeons & Daddies, etc. would switch to something more suiting their needs than using D&D for everything - I consume them *despite* D&D, not because of it. Will they do that? No. For most TTRPG-players "D&D" and "TTRPG" are synonymous and using "D&D" instead of the more generic "TTRPG" will yield more new consumers and is therefore better SEO. And at this point I would argue that such established brands as CR, D20 - yeah, even Dungeons & Daddies despite their name - could switch their ruleset because of their already secured fanbase (due to the personalities involved, not the ruleset) and simple word of mouth ("have you listened to XY? they are so funny!"), but those are just some of my thoughts.

The golden age ended quiet a while ago. This here (hopefully) is the end of the monopoly tyrant empire DnD has enjoyed over the industry as a result of that golden age. Entropy is the state of all things, and legitimate competition breeds innovation and quality. I suspect DnD's decline will be the best thing to happen to the hobby.

The golden age of Dungeons and Dragons ended when wotc bought the IP from TSR. I left wotc games seven years ago and haven't looked back. Now I collect and play BECMI, AD&D 1E/2E and Mongoose Traveller 2nd edition/Traveller 2300AD. Honestly critical roll needs to go away just like wotc does. Both are very bad for the hobby but for different reasons. Critical roll gives a false representation of what actual play is like and so many new players who watch that stuff and then go to a game often leave when they find out its not like Critical Roll. wotc needs to learn we do not exist in their community, they exist in OUR community and have overstayed their welcome years ago and its time they go.

Most 5e players don't even know about the OGL b*****p and couldn't care less This is a well made video but it's only an invested minority who care enough to move from 5e. To all those comments saying the TSR era was the Golden Age, it was but 5e from 2016 to 2021 was the second Golden Age. Indie systems are NEVER going to dent the brand name power of D&D.

For me, I'm a huge Forgotten Realms lore fan, though I'm not a fan of them changing the lore recently just to make more money (example, they changed the lore for Themberchaud entirely because the directors of the D&D movie convinced them it would be funny). I want to run another FR campaign, but I'm torn between doing it in PF2E or just using old school 5e (prior to the recent monster stat block simplification). I'm a little bit turned off by the fact PF2E is now releasing a revised edition. I just started getting into it and now the rules are going to be changing. I think the best thing to do is if they're going to change the rules, just make a new edition, or change minor things with errata. By doing an edition update they're essentially making it hard for DMs to run the old version because the new version supplants it. Most people who join a 5th edition game are going to want to play by the new rules because they perceive an update as better, and I feel the same will happen with PF2E. At least if you get a group together for 2e D&D or 3.5e D&D they know what they're going to be playing. Plus, the new 5th hasn't even come out and they've already made massive changes to monsters and NPCs, so this whole rollout is so convoluted who knows where 5e stops and revised 5e begins? I wish they'd give Ed Greenwood the rights back to FR so we could get some FR content for other systems.

My advice, instead of FR try Lion and Dragon in the OSR. It's well researched, brutal and old school.

I saw the revised pf2e rules too, and as someone who is highly interested in the system, I did a little research into the new revision. From the looks of things, it appears to be fixing up some parts of classes and providing some new rules for focus points. The rules will stay mostly the same, just some minor changes here and there as well as hopefully some new class options.

Oh boy I gagged a little at the idea that only combat needs rules..Cause I never want to play a character that can do things that i cannot do, well besides killing stuff, duh. If you don't think rules should impact social interactions, you come off just same way as saying no one should be a fighter unless they know how to use a sword. Roll playing is about exploring new worlds and stories but by no means should socially awkward players should never play characters who have social graces?
@WinglessValkyrie
@WinglessValkyrie Жыл бұрын
I understand what you’re trying to say but respectfully, I think your turning a anthill into a mountain here. Yes stat blocks and spells have an impact on role play as well as combat but you spend far more time deep in the game system during combat than any other time playing.
@Sidenonra

@@WinglessValkyrie With all due respect, I think you are acting like someone whose only tool is a hammer. There are many RPGs out there like D&D that spend the vast majority of their rules on combat, but that is not all of them nor is it the only way to make an RPG. Playing out an RPG is about telling a story and what part of a story your game focuses on changes what stories you tell. Let's set up a simple fantasy idea. There is a big evil army of undead coming to invade the several kingdoms. Your party wants to stop this horde, but there is civil, and political unrest as the several kingdoms were either recently at war or still at war with each other. There are at least three major things you could focus on in this campaign. You could focus on the logistical issues of moving and supplying your armed forces. You know repairing the fortress, getting farms up and running again, repairing roads and the like. You could focus on how the leaders and people mistrust each other and political intrigue ETC. Or you could focus on the characters fighting the evil army and maybe even killing the lich king in personal combat...Or you could focus on the aftermath of it. All four of those things can make compelling stories and game play but D&D and pathfinder chose to focus rules on combat. TL:DR you can make a game that focuses it's rules on any one of those story beats and role play out the rest without picking up a single die. There is no more reason combat is more rules crunch than and less hand waves than either the political or logistical story beat.

I don't care how bad they ruin it, I'm not letting D&D die entirely, because they don't get to take it from us. even if the only surviving part is my call to redo it in a new unwoke edition.

Yep. The only good thing out of the debacle is that 5e is safely Creative Commons now. We can continue to Moodle around with the game system for 20+ years, if we like. And the rules for CC are much easier than the OGL. Just provide one sentence of attribution, and don't copy non-CC stuff word for word.
