Growing up in the 2000s, Rockstar Games was THE gold standard for games. Where I live every computer that is used to play games has at least one GTA game installed (usually San Andreas). Anytime someone asked, "hey, I wanna start playing games. What should I start with?" they were always told to play at least one Rockstar game. Whether it was GTA or Max Payne or Midnight Club. They were inescapable and you couldn't help but get sucked in and enjoy it. I used to look up to Rockstar. They were the only developer I ever fanboyed over. To watch them go from making such varied and high quality games throughout the 6th and 7th generation of consoles to just releasing 2 games for the 8th generation (I consider the PS4 and Xbox One versions of GTA V to be the definitive console versions of the game because the PS3/Xbox 360 consoles were holding the developers back and the PS5/Xbox Series X versions are just pointless). Watching them not honour their own legacy by releasing the awful Definitive Edition trilogy was what broke me. Then I found out that many of the writing team left Rockstar after Red Dead Redemption 2 and I learned about all the scrapped ideas and rumours about what GTA 6 was originally supposed to be and I couldn't blame them for leaving. I want to believe that Take Two Interactive is responsible for the downfall of Rockstar Games but apart from just "they got greedy" we'll never know what led to the fall from grace. I do think GTA 6 will be a great game but I don't know if it'll surpass the standards of past greats like IV and San Andreas. And even if it does, it'll probably be the last good GTA. That's how little faith I have left in the developers.
@deathlock99798 ай бұрын
Get the original Xbox ports of the first three gta games, they're objectively the best versions. Still mad they've never bothered to rerelease the stories games, Chinatown wars, or the the first two gta games in any capacity, though honestly after the anniversary, rdr and definitive edition ports its probably for the best.
@wolfboy208 ай бұрын
Wait what were the Gta 6 scrapped ideas and rumors about?
@CyanRooper8 ай бұрын
@@wolfboy20 Supposedly the game was set from the late 70s to the early 80s in Vice City and would have featured a story inspired by the Netflix series Narcos. As the years in game passed and the story progressed, the map and characters would change in different ways. New cars and buildings would show up, new songs would get added to the radio stations. Characters would visibly get older. Basically the world would feel more alive due to several things in it changing as in game time passed. Some of the vehicles and weapons which were meant to show up in this version of GTA 6 were said to be reused in GTA V in Online updates like in the Cayo Perico Heist update. It is believed that these ideas were scrapped because Take Two Interactive thought that a period piece game would be harder to make online updates for and therefore would be harder to sell Sharkcards for (look at what happened to Red Dead Online). So they supposedly forced Rockstar Games to turn GTA 6 into another game set in modern times which, combined with the lack of single player DLC for GTA V and the constant focus on Online updates, possibly led to several members of the writing team for the GTA series leaving Rockstar Games. Those people basically felt like they no longer had as much control over the GTA series as they used to (they weren't even allowed to decide when the story would be set) so they left with some even forming their own studios (Absurd Ventures).

I think the main reasons everyone says GTA3 is the hardest of the OG Trilogy is the slow exit from upturned vehicles/ no diving out, no swimming and that GOD AWFUL auto-aim In terms of player freedom; you've got _wayyy_ fewer restrictions re 'how you complete your missions' than 4 or 5. As for which major Dev struck the most gold the last 2 and a bit decades, arguing for anyone other than Rockstar is a losing fight. They are to the 6th and 7th gen of gaming what Tarrantino was to 90s and 00's Hollywood

gta 3 is the hardest one because of some small issues like: having no map on pause menu, having no blips on minimap when you are near ammu-nation or pay'n'spray, aim is slightly offset from the center and some missions are straight up impossible to finish if you are not an experienced player (same can be applied for both vice city and san andreas but gta 3 is infamous for having some seriously unbalanced missions - especially near the end of the game - one of them is the mission with coffee boxes)

I then found out that Rockstar also makes games dedicated to racing enthusiasts: Midnight Club. Some time later, with me getting a bit tired of playing NFS games, I decided to give Midnight Club 2 and 3 a try. Man, the joy I felt when driving and boosting through the city with the incredible jams that they had, it was truly an amazing experience.

The Warriors (game) were actually pretty famous in my country, especially in the city where I lived at the time. I think it kickstarted a bunch of elementary and middle school kids to form gangs and buy spray paints, myself included. I don't know if this gets me in trouble now, but It got to the point of us going to school with spray paints with the intention to write our gang initials on the back of the buildings, then meet up after school and spray some more elsewhere, covering existing gang paints (this is asking for a lot of trouble), and even having our own hangout akin to The Warriors. PS2 rentals were pretty big in those days, which was how most kids were able to play the game (also from word of mouth). Mention any quote from the game, and someone will probably recognize it, "Oh shit, The Warriors, right?" or "Hey, that's Cleon!". Granted, the game arguably influenced us kids in a pretty bad way back then, but most of us have moved on. Though, the game is still somewhere in our hearts in a fun and warm memory kind of way, lmao. Thanks for opening up these memories, awesome video!

And dude, the mods for GTA IV went crazyyyy when i was a kid, the game took me days to torrent even though it was only like 10GB because my internet was REALLY slow even for 2010, but I kept it for years (🙏🏻 to Razor1911). Regarding that car in Caesar mission in San Andreas, originally the devs intended to use a helicopter to go there and take those picture from helicopter that's why carl and caesar are screaming at each other when you're clicking the pictures. Amd they thought how did Caesar got a chopper anyway? So they replaced the chopper with that lowrider amd I suppose the code of having the mission fail when you leave the helicopter got carried over.

When you were talking about how Midnight Club 3 had that appeal to both racing fans and non racing fans. I fully agreed with you because that’s one of the things that made the game so good. From the outside it had that appeal where it was a fun racing game that can be played by anyone from different backgrounds and genres like you said. Yet from the inside it still had many key components and features that helped make this game a solid racing game for all the die hard racing fans as well. This isn’t related to this video. But whenever I see a “problem with modern racing games” type of video. Everyone always talks about how we’re missing this and we’re missing that. But no one talks about how most racing games just simply aren’t that fun anymore and how they also lost that appeal to other non racing fans. I think if some racing games could go back to having that appeal where it could be played by anyone while still having that key characteristics of what makes a racing game a racing game, without sacrificing the core fanbase, and trying to make it a fun experience just like the Midnight Club games did. It would probably change up the whole atmosphere and mood of the newer games, and might make the experience a lot more better and fun for the player imo. Overall this video was really good. I enjoyed watching it. The editing was nice and very clean. I noticed there was also some funny moments in here as well. Especially when you talked about the flying missions from Vice City. Well actually that probably wasn’t funny to you but it was to me sorry lol. Also this might seem like a hot take. But I think this is your best video yet!

I'm a bit surprised nobody else has pointed this out, but there's a factual error at 20:56 - "Hold The Line" by Toto wasn't in GTA Vice City, it was in GTA San Andreas on the K-DST station. As for Vice City, you may have meant "Africa", another Toto song which was featured in Vice City on Emotion 98.3. Other than that, I have to say that I will definitely follow your channel in the near future. Several of those are among my favorite games of all time, so this was quite a trip down memory lane, even though I occasionally return to the 3D GTAs or Max Paynes to this day.
@Fastminer078 ай бұрын
It's technically a factual error, but not as much as you'd think. When I was going back through the ost to pick favorites for that section, I pulled up a playlist on yt which claimed to be the full playlist, which was likely based on the international releases of the OST on CDs, because the European edition of the Flash FM soundtrack CD does have Hold the Line, so while it wasn't in the version of the game I played, it was "technically" on the soundtrack.

Honestly, it might have been a better idea not to go into MCLA and GTA IV on this video. A. because Fastminer already talked his opinion on MCLA on his Midnight Club video and B. because I feel like GTA IV and it's episodes are so large in scope just on story alone that it would take a considerably large video to just talk about the main game, and an even longer one to talk about the DLCs. Other than that, a good video as always, also, you HAVE to play GTA LCS and VCS if you haven't already, the soundtrack alone on both titles is worth the price of admission alone. I mean, LCS has Bring it Back by Moloko, Terrorist by Renegade, Ruff Riders Anthem by DMX and a whole station of nothing but Giorgio Moroder with hits like E=MC2, I wanna Rock You and (my personal favorite) Chase. And VCS is basically just VC again, many of the same artists, different tracks, some artists not featured in the original VC and two funk-adjacent radios with VCFL with smooth funk and what I can only call "love making music" and Paradise FM, one of my favorite disco stations in the series, up there with Bounce FM and both versions of K109 The Stuido.

Glad you brought up the restrictions during missions, this was something that always drove me nuts and you STILL see it to this day in games like RDR2. I'll be on a horse doing a mission not really paying attention because the mission is basically over we're just now "talking" to the NPC along with us in the mission and if you accidentally deviate riding your horse it will just snap end the mission and make you restart it. Like that's just annoying and seems like something that is easily fixed it doesn't add anything to the game or even the difficulty it just makes it straight up annoying. This is why in GTA games I despise any mission that focuses on cars/planes etc because the second you deviate even slightly it's all over and like 90% of the time it's just because you're barely paying attention because the mission objective is already OVER.

I just finished the video but I gotta comment on how fire that intro scene was, 2000s Rockstar is probably a record yet to be broken. I'd even argue they kept the run going until just after GTA V.

yup GTAO kinda put an end to that streak. Which makes Rockstar's standing so disfavorable in my eyes. Of course there's fun to be had with Online, and RDR2 is an amazing game but the time between games and just the scummy things they've done for so long is just. Something i can't vibe with

I made this specific list from my last video on Rockstar called "The Greatest Franchise Rockstar Abandoned" were I gotta bunch of comments that were "umm actually, the best franchise they abandoned was ____________" and so I tallied them up, threw in Midnight Club and GTA cause I already knew they were good, then sat down and played them all for the first time. So stuff like State of Emergency, Oni, and Beaterator got cut, that and this video was already way too long.

I will have to revisit Vice City's soundtrack, as I don't recall it that well, but SA's is definitely my favourite. I recall several instances of me playing that game and just taking a car/bike for a ride through the desert/mountains listening to the radio. Suffice to say, I have the whole thing on my personal playlist. Also, you might want to give LCS and VCS a try, as I also recall picking up some great songs in the latter. As a side note, somehow I know barely anything about the Midnight Club series, despite spending countless hours in NFSU, U2, and MW, and replaying each one several times. I don't even recall running into them on KZbin before for whatever reason, but then again, maybe I did, but never paid attention to them.

Who says GTA IV wasn't up to spec? Sure, it was a "downgrade" compared to San Andreas, but a giant leap engine wise. I'd also say that GTA V was another "downgrade" in many aspects I loved about IV. The whole movement system, for example, it felt much more weighty and real to me in IV, especially the climbing. Water physics were much better in IV aswell and helicopters also felt more like a real machine I'm controlling than V. To be fair, the only "real" downgrade I see is that it has no planes and it's "just" a city. Aside from that I think it's a step up from San Andreas in every other aspect.
@lukasmallinder46418 ай бұрын
great video, really. But in regards to GTA VC, the "Demolition man" mission is actually completely optional, there's a thing people call the avery effect, where new players think his missions are required to progress the game but they aren't. Aunt Poulet and Avery's missions are all side missions.
@Fastminer078 ай бұрын
tbf, that makes me think about something with the missions in GTA VC and SA, which is that they don't always do that good of a job differentiating the side missions from the main missions, that's something I'd say the later gta's do much better
@lukasmallinder46418 ай бұрын
It's a main problem in regards to the 3D Trilogy, in GTA III for exemple, if you don't do a certain mission order, 10 missions could become unavaliable and in VC the game doesn't really explain properly to the player that they should go buy property in order to progress the game, you just finish the vercetti state and that's it. @@Fastminer07

SA does it a bit better as in I actually knew how to finish it without looking it up, but I still did half of zero's missions before realizing they were optional

It isnt a side mission you actually need to do it to progress. On a side note if you’re on pc use the cheat that allows you to slow down time. Makes the mission so much easier

Rockstar had by far almost no bad games, look at the GTA franchise, the Red Dead Redemption franchise, the Max Payne franchise, the midnight club franchise, manhunt, L.A Noire, Bully, Oni? They had games that flopped but they weren't exactly bad, they were decent games that just did not succeed. Rockstar is notorious for its greedyness and how many times it re-released GTA V but if we're talking about the games they cooked up I would call it the best studio video gaming has ever experienced.
