The golden compass' visual style is a lot more magical and fairytale-esque, while the series is a lot more grim and a lot of the sets are less grand and more down to earth (though some are actually bigger and grander). While it definitely was a conscious effort, it also definitely helped with the smaller budget.

Meanwhile, The Golden Compass is simply an example where the filming company you're working has the significant control over your creative freedom and while the film is decent at the least, it's still merely a film made for sake of profits, hence why it was ended up as a box office flop regardless of its impressive visual features. Oh, and honestly TGC isn't even as good as the 3+ hours moster epic that is King Kong from 2005, which only took like *two years of development and production* and costed just 'slightly' more expensive.

When certain shots are compared side by side like this, you can tell they referenced the film to get an idea of how to shoot certain scenes. I think this is ok! I also think it means the 2007 movie deserves more credit for its visual direction. It took a lot of liberties with the source material, yes, but people are also too eager to overlook what it did right, a mistake the bbc team didn’t make. The BBC series is more accurate to the books than the film. Firstable cause the series tells the story for not a child target like they did with the movie and all the sense of the books disappeared. Secondly, in a film the cost of the production is highly more than in a TV show so all of the costs will be more awesome in the film than in the show. And finally, about the cast, I will say that Ruth Wilson takes Ms Coulter to another level overpassing Nicole Kidman which made an amazing performance (like always) on that film. It's interesting for me to see how many people here in the comments prefer the movie version of the daemons and their interactions with the people around them over the show version, while for me it was the entire opposite. Even though this video necessarily leaves out many scenes of Lyra and Pan from the show, as they were simply not included in the movie, you can tell the effort they put into showing the connection between a person and their daemon in the show just from these scenes. While in the movie, both are often shown apart from each other and not really taking notice of each other, in the show they have constant conversations, eye contact, including them into the action (compare for example Lyra looking at the alethiometer, where in the show she actively slides over to look at it together with Pan). Still people find the movie version more appealing because there are more hugs and the like, even though those hugs often remain the only interaction they have. I wonder if that might be a cultural difference here. Emotion in US-American productions often seem to be shown through overly expressive actions (like dramatic hugs), that can quickly feel "over the top" to Europeans, while we tend to portray emotion with subtle interactions without having to constantly be on top of each other.

It seems that the fans of the movie are mostly casual viewers/audience. My cousin really liked the movie because of the Hollywood Fantasy Hero genre trope and hates the series because according to him it's too dark and too realistic. Casual fans don't care about details and character developments; they just simply want to be entertained for 2 hours along with their favorite actors, CGI, and as you said, the over the top emotions. I'm not American nor European but many people in the world also are used to Hollywood films with their over-the-top everything. Casual audience will never be able to sit through eight to twelve hours of TV, it made them restless. I know this from experience that casual audience seriously prefers bad movies as long they have big budget stuff that bedazzles them instead of quality storytelling.

I like both versions. I think that the series would be way greater if they could do it with movie actors. Nicole Kidman's acting was more mysterious and motherly (in case of her daughter), series actress was good but looked quite unstable in her mind. Eva Green's witch looked better, series one reminds me of witch from DmC tbh, which doesn't fit here (however she played it great). Also the atmosphere of movie is more magical and soft while atmosphere of series reminds me movies about WW2. Anyway, both versions actors did great job.

The film is all in all not that bad, and in many instances follows the book more closely than the series. It is a bit too colorful and happy, but I guess that's what they aimed for. The main things they did wrong was somehow putting Svalbard before Bolvangar, and also not making the whole series. I don't like that they cut the ending (would love a director's cut as well), but it is acceptable since they never made any more films anyways.

I know people prefer the HBO series, and I can appreciate for what it is. But geez, the film. The cast, the colors, the aesthetic, I maintain it all looks rather great. I know the film had more money, but it was totally meddled with by the studio. The series may not have had the budget, but they did have the time, and the producers had much more control, and it's still not really book accurate at all. There are parts I enjoy, and other parts I just don't get what they're going for. The gyptians, for instance. Aren't they supposed to be exotic Mediterranean gypsies or something? These jokers in the show look like they should be running a flea market around Cleveland or some such. Just very bland and boring.

Thank you, Matt, for a truly phenomenal video. I have played around with DaVinci 16 (free edition) and what you have done took some dedicated work. It was well done, I still like the characterizations from the movie more than the series; I feel they reflect the people as described in the book more accurately. If you notice, once the series got past what was covered in the movie, they seemed to loosen up and follow the book more closely. At first, I was worried about interjecting the scenes from the second book (Will's back story) but it worked and I think might be worthwhile going forward. I am still not happy with them taking an ultra-minor character in Lord Boreal and making him such an important figure. I hope this second season ends the way it should if you catch my drift. Stay safe and healthy.

Don't get me wrong, I love the TV-series, but something about The Golden Compass just seems far more magical. Everything to the odd carriages and the golden color scheme. They even used swords instead of guns. Plus, the daemons seem more connected in the movie compared to the show. Even though the bears aren't daemons Lyra still showed more compassion with him compared to the Lyra in the show. (11:05) One of the reasons why the concept was so unique was because of the daemons, which the show did not seem to.. well.. show.

Of course that doesn't mean that the tv-series is all negatives. It was really great! But overall I think the casting, the visuals, the music and just the general vibe was better. It captured the spirit of the book better imo. Maybe it's just nostalgia on my part because I grew up with the film but the series lacked that magical feeling that I loved about this story. Plus, they royally screwed up the bear fight and I can't forgive them for that because it's the best scene in both the book and the film.

Really I wonder where they were going with that ending back then, since they had planned to adapt all the books. Roger survives, no opening between worlds so how does Lyra travel to Cittagazze and meet Will in the second movie ? Also if Roger is alive, how does Lyra decide to go the Land of the Dead in the third movie ?
@AbelMcTalisker4 жыл бұрын
Good point, the basic problem is the complexity of the story and trying to give an idea of what is going on in a single movie was always going to be difficult and I don`t think they entirely managed to pull it off. I really don`t know how they planned to continue the second movie as they not only have to resolve the whole death of Roger scene (perhaps one of these days we might get a special edition with the original ending restored?) but then jump away from Lyra`s story and introduce Will, A whole separate movie in itself! I suppose they might have just followed Will for the entire movie after Rogers death and just have him meet up with Lyra in Cittagazze at the end, intending to make four movies at least. I suspect though that the critics would have had a field day and a lot of the audience that liked the fantasy elements of the first film would be disappointed with a second one that takes place entirely in our world with few fantasy elements and a different protagonist. At least the TV series has the longer run time so they can tell Will and Lyra`s stories in parallel and season 2 can start in Cittagazze.

The film had such an aesthetic that is difficult to find even in nowadays films or tv series. It was just so unique and the acting was on point. People are saying that the series is way better in the plot and the acting and they’re right because it’s a series, there’s more time to see and react to the characters than in a max 3 hour film. But if the “Golden Compass” had been in series format, it wouldn’t have had much to envy “His dark materials.” Still, I like how their retook this amazing books and gave an end to the trilogy. God knows how much I’ve wanted a sequel of the Golden Compass.

It’s weird. So like I can see where technology has improved enough to surpass a 180million dollar budget of the pass and how technology has just made the whole process cheaper and better quality. But I can still also see where the 180 million dollar comes into play in the older film. Grander set designs. More background actors and animated characters. Could also have different stylistic choices. Though the film has grander and more magical designs the series has more grounded realistic designs. Also 2007 golden compass had a very white cast. Though I need to read the books. I don’t mind if it’s to be authentic to the ethnicity of the source material. If it’s not specified though yes let’s spice it up. If it was and they made it all white anyways shame on them.

It was kinda jarring to me to see so many characters imagined as white to be black in the series. I thought it made sense everyone was white since they were all English/British. But actually the world of His dark materials (the book) is like an alternate history, and it's kinda steam punk. So it's not totally out there for there to be significantly more racial diversity. Even among gypsies, since you'd expect them to be ethically homogenous. But that's in the case of our world, not Lyra's world. All in all, nice way to use diversity without it taking precedence over the story.
