Hi Dan and Lester It was great to see you both back at East Devon. Your video has really captured what we are trying to achieve, as I knew it would (we wouldn’t have entrusted our course to anyone else!) - so thanks! The shapers started on the 13th this week and it is already showing what it can be - the bushes have gone and the view through to Portland Bill is just what we hoped for. I look forward to seeing you both back again next year for the “after” filming - and will see you at some of the Alliances, I hope. All the best Dave

Absolutely loved this video. Please please do a after video when it's all done and maybe a vlog around there aswell. The views when those trees are gone are going to be out of this world. Really nice to see a golf club put high handicappers/vets and ladies sections into consideration when re designing the course to get new people into the sport and enjoying it more. As I'll always say yet again smashing the golf content on KZbin and will be more first choice channel. Keep up great work guys 👍👌

It's a beautiful piece of land and the clearing work recently has really made the natural colours and features stand out. Fascinating to see how difficult it is to actually design a golf course fair for all with the challenges of the modern golf ball and equipment.

As many others have already posted - a refreshing change to much of KZbin golf. A great insight to a very different facet of golf, not the usual golf club review / course vlog. Great memories of this course - one of my favourites. Playing this with wooden drivers, balata balls, tiger shark clubs fantastic. 72 holes over various two day holidays followed by cream teas in Budleigh, then big nights out in Exmouth (student years) - punishing schedule. The worst holiday was when it was closed because of weather!!

It's encouraging to see the average golfer's needs high on the designer's list of priorities and a club planning not just for now but for future generations of players. More of these mini-documentaries plus maybe some in-depth interviews with the likes of Paul, Joe The Pro, Gilly, etc. would be a great way of filling the gaps between course vlogs as they become harder to do in sufficient numbers through the winter months.

Great video guys CDP are doing some excellent work, Mike Clayton is based here in Melbourne and is a walking encyclopaedia on course design and a great listen. My home course on the sandbelt is going to be under going a remodel to fix sins of the past, committees have a place in a club but can be very dangerous to the course itself with disjointed “improvements” over multiple years. Keep up the great work, course design is a wonderful rabbit hole.

A thoroughly enjoyable watch. Back when we had time and the passion to do this sort of thing, my brother and myself filmed a couple of short films very similar to this, because we found it interesting, and educational to Golfers who perhaps didn’t know the history of their clubs, and where the clubs wanted to be heading into a new generation of golfers coming through. Goes to show, engaging Golf content, doesn’t always need to be course vlogs and new club reviews. Eagerly anticipate more content of this ilk in the future. Bravo.

Your best vid of the week IMO, from what has been a mixed, low key bag of content from DHG over the past six days. I'm including the Belfry 10th hole challenge too, which I've just watched - well halfway through, then I got bored of watching a bunch rather rotund blokes with an eclectic array of swings try and murder a golf ball LOL-in what was more or less a Titleist promo.. Seriously though, I really enjoyed this East Devon GC rebuild vid. I'm not familiar with the course designer's name but was impressed with his approach. It was interesting to hear him rate Harry Colt in peerless terms without a even nod to the great Doctor, but MacKenzie was more prolific overseas than in the British Isles. I know East Devon is rated highly and the club is fortunate to such visionary people taking it into the future. Nice work from all concerned.

Hey Dan great video - Myself and partner played it this year for second time in their mixed Open based on a video you did way back - play my golf at Sunningdale another Colt Course and live within in the middle of many greats Swinley Berkshire Sunningdale Worpkesdon New Zealand Wentworth St George’s and one forgotten gem Sunningdale Heath aka Sunningdale Ladies - East Devon has a trick up it’s sleeve and that is the vista - few can compare to some of the views you get and yes it isn’t up there with the large Surrey Course but certainly this is a great course full of character and I saw a great improvement this year and can’t wait to get back there - If I lived in Budleigh or around that area Ivwould apply in. Heartbeat - a real gem - come and play Sunningdale Heath adjoining the Old - 18 postage stamps 👍👍👌😄

Great video. I think that ED is one of the best in the area but I can see how many of the original features are now obsolete and potentially unfair for certain players. Never really noticed when I played it which just goes to show what a subtle art golf course design is. Well done to the committee for accepting change with a view to the future.

Really enjoyed this as a big fan of EDGC. We travel down from Bristol to play there as and when, great course with a real welcoming atmosphere. Look forward to going back down to see the changes! Do they have any plans for the 2nd green at all? That thing can get unplayable when it’s firm and fast with it sloped so heavily, good fun though!

Love these behind the scenes look at the golf world. Curious whether the trend if golf course development is a return to the architects original intent. Or whether there's a new breed of architects trying to make courses longer and harder. I strongly support restoring courses to their original design intent.
@1418golf2 жыл бұрын
There trend now is definitely restoration of original architecture ideas rather than just add more bunkers and long rough 🤮
@davidballard97812 жыл бұрын
This was a very good insight into work being done on a course although I’ve never played it,but to listen to your comments and what the Greenkeeper was saying the changes will be good for everyone.A few years ago we had some work done to our course but the truth is apart having a big pond (haha)put in and that hole being changed the owner just really made it longer which has made it harder for the average golfer or senior,and all because we had 2 people that could hit a long ball (and they’ve left now anyway. I think the owner missed a few bits but unfortunately he’s the sort of person who thinks people are after something and ignores what been said so we all either given up talking to him or make seem like it his idea .

@garysmith69942 жыл бұрын

Great video... I disagree about the bunker on the par 3... For me a thinned shot should not have a chance of getting on a par 3s green, so a bunker at the front is fair play for me. The higher handicappers get more shots because they can't reach all the holes in regulation so they should use the shot.
@roymarsden49452 жыл бұрын
Great video guys. At Buckingham golf club we have just started on a similar journey by getting a course architect in to formulate a plan for the years ahead, so this was a great watch 👍⛳️
@primafacie64422 жыл бұрын
Like what EDGC is doing but do disagree with some of your dialogue Dan. Golf course design should consider and accommodates all skill levels by offering different tee areas (angles and distances). My club originated in 1897 and has 5 different tee areas but high handicappers often don’t tee forward even in winter (egos and peer pressure), and so the club keeps conceding to high handicap demands to remove strategically placed penalty areas. Accepting design and maintenance overheads, if a bunker catches a lot of balls, it’s in the right location!
@CHuzz77772 жыл бұрын
@@barryglynnglynn2841 I think some compromises can be made but there comes a point where maybe the course just can’t accommodate everyone. I’m a member at the Players Club in Bristol. There are some holes there that the higher handicaper or older players just can’t escape - if they can’t carry the water they ain’t finishing the hole. A course that doesn’t offer me at least a few heart stoppers isn’t worth playing to me. I need the thrill of the challenge and to see that ball in the air hoping I’ve given it enough to carry that water or bunker etc.
@CHuzz77772 жыл бұрын
@@barryglynnglynn2841 Yeah, that doesn’t sound great. Wind, narrow fairways and thick rough isn’t an exciting combination for me. I need infrastructure! Ponds, bunkers, trees to negotiate not rough to stomp around in looking forlornly for a ball. Just got back from France, Hardelot - the Les Dunes course is absolutely fantastic, just my cup of tea.

First off a different type of DHG Media video and I have mixed feelings on it. It's always good to see from a courses perspective why they make changes. But in this case I cannot understand why changes are important. They charge massive amounts of money to play their course and after the changes are made they will increase these green fees and make it not accessible to the normal player. We hear all the time golf doesn't have to be expensive, you don't have to pay £5k for clubs to enjoy the game, but it seems to me that some courses are making golf too expensive for the masses. £50 is expensive for me personally I am sure others will not want to pay £30, but some of these courses are charging between £85-150 per round. Not everyone can afford that. Dan advertising East Devon only helps them to charge more fees or maybe that's the point.
@PMMeiners2 жыл бұрын
Great subject but poorly filmed. At 09:00 where Dan and the greenkeeper are talking about the bunker we don’t see any? We only seen Dan and the greenkeeper!?!? What the heck is Bernie doing? He should be filming all of this as Dan is a great interviewer. Just don’t get it. Ahh… now I get it! at 19:00 Bernie is saying he is not interested in course design. Come on… what are you doing in this vlog? It would have been much better to have Dan’s brother there. He knows what course design is.
