The Cambridge University Gilbert & Sullivan Society's ‘The Gondoliers’!!!

The Palmieri brothers hold mastery over the Venitian canals and the hearts of the local girls. But the arrival of the Spanish aristocracy along with the Grand Inquisitor presents a royal revelation and a serious identity crisis to the Gondolieri and their brides. With romance, political satire, roses white, and roses red, 'The Gondoliers' is a wonderful opera in the G&S repertoire. Of that there is no manner of doubt, no possible doubt whatever!
Contemporary references
● 00:30:10 - During the Covid-19 pandemic, musicians and artists were typically not treated very well! There was a rather hilarious/tragic job advert about a ballerina, Fatima, whose next job would be in cyber. "We are viable, Boris", refers to PM Boris Johnson.
● 00:58:35 - "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition", refers to the famous Monty Python sketch.
● 00:58:58 - "We're following all the guidelines", refers to the Covid-19 pandemic regulations. There is not a "ceremony going on" as, for a time, weddings and gatherings were banned.
● 01:02:30 - "I've a very poor opinion of a politician who is not open to conviction". During this show's run, PM Boris Johnson was under investigation for breaking laws that he wrote and enforced during the pandemic. At the time the laws were broken, mixing between households was limited to two people, who could only meet outside when socially distancing. He was later found guilty of breaking the law and was the first PM to be convicted of law-breaking while in Office...
● 01:40:25 - "I thought this was a work event" refers to the Boris Johnson Partygate scandal, where he attended many parties during the covid lockdown, and later tried to claim that he thought he was attending a work event.
● 01:41:35 - "Perhaps some wine and cheese" refers to the Boris Johnson Partygate scandal, where wine and cheese were served at a party that Johnson referred to as being a "work event"
