Explore Victorian mourning rituals and the fashions that made the practice so morbidly fascinating.
The Grade I listed Brompton Cemetery is the well-loved resting place of over 200,000 people, a haven for wildlife and a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
Nestled among the spectacular trees and undergrowth are over 35,000 gravestones and monuments. The cemetery is alive with the amazing stories of all the people buried there since the 1830s, including some well-known names like Emmeline Pankhurst and John Snow.
It remains a working cemetery to this day, with a dedicated staff arranging burials and services in its magnificent chapel.
Whether you want to learn about Brompton’s rich history, go for a stroll, grab a cup of coffee or just sit in quiet contemplation, Brompton Cemetery is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of West London.

Since I've been working on my genealogy, I've been trying to learn more about Brompton Cemetery because some of my Woodhouse family members are buried there. I'm in the U.S., but when I can (after the pandemic), I'd love to make a visit to Brompton. In the meantime, thank you so much for sharing this incredible information. I've found this fascinating and so very helpful. Thank you for all of those that contributed for your time and knowledge.

Blanche Roosevelt was Theodore Roosevelt's distant cousin. The connection to FDR was far more distant and never spoken of. Roosevelt was Blanche's mother's maiden name. Blanche used it as a stage and pen name. She was also an accomplished singer and author. The part of Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance was written for her. She wrote a biography of Gustave Dore, and a few novels. The monument over her grave was erected by one of her lovers, a man named Ball. There was originally a glass shell over the monument to protect it from the weather and birds. Blanche's sister Minnie was my great-grandmother.

This is the third programme I've watched about Brompton Cemetery and none mention the grave of one of the twentieth century's great singers, Richard Tauber lies oh the left side of the central road. Still a great video.

I think IHS = Iesus hominum salvator = Jesus saviour of men (i.e. the human race).

Oh Please ... NO SINGING ! Just impart the information. Brompton is a very fascinating place , with poignant moment insight into the attitude twd death across the social classes. AS FOR Post Mortem photography we must be mindful that death was familiar to everyone. People shared much about their natural aspects in Life and death. People would have deceased family members laid out iñ the home. Children pparticipated in all aspects of life. Everyone shared one bed... Children didn't need to be told about birth or death. Many people still lived in semi rural environments or had relatives who lived on farms. Now we don't talk about anything. We live in an Uber clinical environment. I have friends who have never seen a dead human body. Astounding. These things astound me ... Not that I would encourage Ambulance chasing.
