And I’ve never felt so much love within and so much peace.

I grew up in and studied the Protestant church. I was told from childhood the church had either died or been corrupted and they (Protestants) had revived it. I read the gates of hell will not prevail...and began searching for the real church. Long story short, after studying Eastern Orthodoxy I woke up in the middle of the night reciting the Jesus Prayer “Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me a sinner”, over and over. I was in an Antiochian Orthodox Church that next Sunday. I remember crying, tears in my eyes, and inside my head a voice, “you are home”. I’ve never looked back and I love it. My son is now a monk in a Russian Orthodox monastery. He chose Orthodoxy and that life after being a Baptist for many years. May God bless you on your journey.

I just recently attended my first Vepsers and Divine Liturgy services this past weekend at an Eastern Orthodox Church near where I live, and I must say, it was indeed quite different from the way I am used to worshiping as a Southern Baptist. However, the only awkwardness I felt was not knowing what to do or where to stand during the services. The priest, and members of the congregation were quite patient and gracious towards me and enthusiastically invited me back. That will most assuredly happen as I need to land somewhere as far as attending church goes. I haven't been to church in several years and I was worried there was nothing out there for me beyond what I already knew, and I felt like the Baptist denomination left me a long time ago. I did feel a closeness and comfort that I had not felt in decades there at the Orthodox Church, so I believe God has answered my prayers.

Mar Saba organized the monks of the Judaean Desert in a monastery close to Bethlehem (483), and this is considered the mother of all monasteries of the Eastern Orthodox churches.[15] St. Benedict of Nursia founded the monastery of Monte Cassino in Italy (529), which was the seed of Roman Catholic monasticism in general, and of the order of Benedict in particular. St. Bruno of Carthusia, prompted by the spectre of the damnation of the Good Doctor of Paris Cenodoxus, founded a monastery just outside Paris in the 11th Century. In both the East and the West, cenobiticism established itself as the primary form of monasticism, with many foundations being richly endowed by rulers and nobles. The excessive acquisition of wealth and property led to several attempts at reform, such as Bernard of Clairvauxin the West and Nilus of Sora in the East.

@@jonathansoko1085 What is unique to orthodox in your experience?
@julieherz89093 жыл бұрын
@@GH-te6gp The difference from Rome are the views on Christology, Papacy. The Christological difference between the churches is that the Catholics believe that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the father to the son; while the Orthodox believes that the holy spirit proceeds only from the father. The difference in Papacy is the authority both churches give to the pope. There is not one pope that leads all churches in the Orthodox church and the popes are not infallable. This is different from the Roman catholic where the pope is infallable. The difference between protestants and Orthodox are many. The Anglicans and Lutherans are closer than Evangelicals. Orthodox believe in the holiness of Sacriments, one of which is infant baptism. Orthodox also believe in a complex route to salvation-- a mixture of faith and works which we are engaging in all our life. Incidentally the name of this video "the Good Struggle" is a great way of explaining Orthodox salvation. Orthodox derive knowledge from something called Tradition (the writings of old fathers) along with the Bible. Protestants are split on the issue of seven sacriments, with newer sects rejecting them. Protestants believe in "Solo Scriptura" which means that knowledge can only come from what is said the Bible (without Tradition) through the interpretation of the believer (without necessity for a pope/priest) and "Solo Fida" which means that salvation is through faith rather than a lifelong process. Protestants also reject Mary as Mother of God in any spiritual sense, reject intercession of angels and saints and only pray to Christ. Basically the way Orthodox would probably see it is that the Catholics add too much and the Protestants subtract too much.

I was raised Protestant and recently converted to Orthodoxy. Now I must discern which path to take, married life or monasticism. Neither are appealing to me. Please pray for me!
@heatherstub3 жыл бұрын
Here's a tip. keep praying. Please know you're in my prayers, and I love the monastic life. You can do whatever you do as long as it glorifies God. It's not something you think about but rather you and I are transformed by the renewing of our mind and heart. Presbitera Constantinou calls it the "Fronima". What matters is that you love what you do and that it serves God and others. It takes time, and I discovered that it comes through living a life serving others and that you love your vocation. As a former Protestant myself, I realized that I thought weigh too much. I used to be a customer service rep for a large company until I had to resign. Then, I became a Massage Therapist, and it changed me. Right when I was starting to really enjoy it, I was sidelined with a condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia. They call it the suicide disease, and although I don't believe in that, I realized that Christ was revealing to me that the one thing I feared the most was happening. I had to shut down my business. I'd already been to a few monasteries, and I loved the experiences I had, but I couldn't escape this situation. I had to change the way I looked at life in general, because I knew I was doing God's Will. The married life didn't impress me either. After over 14 years of treatments and two brain surgeries, still, nothing was working as well as I'd hoped. Then, my pain specialist referred me to an acupuncturist, and although I didn't think it would work, wouldn't you know it? It *is* workking! Now, at 56, I'm more complete than I ever thought I'd ever be. You see, you discover so much more about yourself when you've faced challenges and obstacles. I've been totally blind my entire life, and it's normal to me. I've never let anything interfere with that, because I'm fiercely independent. It was Mother Christophora from Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania who taught me years ago that I needed to "be in the present moment." Now, I get it. I discovered that knowledge plus experience equals wisdom. I know. It sounds all too simple, but it's true! I put myself through a lot of grief and worry over everything, when I needed to stop trying to figure it all out, and let the Holy Trinity just guide me. When I stopped resisting and started allowing Christ, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, I was comforted by the fact that I'd already known which way to go. My first love is music. I've recorded one EP, and now, I'm preparing to do more, especially if it includes recording an album. As we say, "GOD WILLING."

@@heatherstub thank you for this thorough response. It’s very helpful. I definitely think too much and get anxious about the future. I watched a documentary on Mount Athos not long ago, done by 60minutes. It goes into depth the lifestyle of the monks and how they ended up there. A lot of the monks living there aren't Greek but travelled to live in the holy mountain. Also, it is the only place on Earth that still keeps Byzantine time and raises the flag of Byzantium each day. Very fascinating. I hope to visit someday soon. Here's said documentary: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3WbgKuoiL-Ni5o&t=

I'm a lebanese christian myself. In Lebanon there are a multitude of Christian sects. In this video we see the Roum, or Orthodox Christians. There are also melkites (Greek Catholics), Maronites (another eastern catholic sect, and the majority of christians in Lebanon), Assyrian, Armenian, Roman Catholic, and Protestant. Then of course you have sunni muslims, shi'a muslims, alawi, druze, and more. Lebanon is the land of all minorities in the region. The Maronites reside in the Holy Valley, Qadisha, and many have a hermetic style of life similar to what we see amongst the monks in this video. Though many of the Maronite hermits live a life of solitude completely away from all other people. The most famous of these was Mar Charbel, arguably the most well-known holy man of Lebanon. As for Roum relations with other christians, they tend to get along well today but that wasn't always the case. There is still some sectarianism even within the small christian populations of the Middle East.

I like the fact that they showed the little details of daily activities, like the incense preparation especially. Which of the Fathers do they have in their library, I wonder? (since they read from them at each meal at trapeza) I was a little surprised to hear chanting in Greek, but maybe it's more common in Arabic churches than I thought. Mar Awgin founded a monastery on Mt. Izla above Nisibis in Mesopotamia (~350), and from this monastery the cenobitic tradition spread in Mesopotamia, Persia, Armenia, Georgia and even India and China.

This is an ancient and pure form of Christianity. I find myself jealous of the silence and peace that comes with it. The modern world has people in a state of constant distraction in order to merely survive. I've tried setting aside an hour a day to unplug, disconnect, concentrate on contemplating God, but I usually fall asleep through the stress of having to be constantly "on" 12-16 hours per day. There are times I've thought of chucking a few supplies in my car and just driving away, changing my name, taking a new identity, the old one disappearing.

I have always been a fan of Monastic Life, having learned the lessons of the Desert Fathers from the beginning of Christianity. the more older I get the more I realize the similarities between different cultures, for example, there are a lot of parallels from the words of these monks to the Native American beliefs from North America.
