Tuco (Eli Wallach) swings, terrified from a hangman's noose as Blondie (Clint Eastwood) points a gun at him then shoots, and sets him free.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In the last and the best installment of his so-called "Dollars" trilogy of Sergio Leone-directed "spaghetti westerns," Clint Eastwood reprised the role of a taciturn, enigmatic loner. Here he searches for a cache of stolen gold against rivals the Bad (Lee Van Cleef), a ruthless bounty hunter, and the Ugly (Eli Wallach), a Mexican bandit. Though dubbed "the Good," Eastwood's character is not much better than his opponents -- he is just smarter and shoots faster. The film's title reveals its ironic attitude toward the canonized heroes of the classical western. "The real West was the world of violence, fear, and brutal instincts," claimed Leone. "In pursuit of profit there is no such thing as good and evil, generosity or deviousness; everything depends on chance, and not the best wins but the luckiest." Immensely entertaining and beautifully shot in Techniscope by Tonino Delli Colli, the movie is a virtually definitive "spaghetti western," rivaled only by Leone's own Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). The main musical theme by Ennio Morricone hit #1 on the British pop charts. Originally released in Italy at 177 minutes, the movie was later cut for its international release.

People, could we take a moment to appreciate how extraordinary Eli Wallach's acting was in this scene in particular? He was outstanding all along, mind you, because his character was so colourful and endearing, but here, he outdid himself. The way he calls "Blondie!" while choking, panting, half enraged and half terrified by the prospect of his death, and at some point he sounds like he's sobbing. He totally nailed it. An amazing actor Eli was, I'm so happy he lived such a long life.

Humm, kind of tricky. I'll take for granted you and I and all of us have seen the movie aa 1000 times. By eliminating the possibility of that THIRD gun in that 3 man duel he was able to concentrate on Angel Eyes. He NEVER intended to kill Tuco. He intended to split the share but had to get that one last hurdle out of the way. But your 3rd observation just made good sense because all that money was involved. He just wanted a good head start out of there.

It should be called the Anti-Hero, the bad, and the evil. However this doesn't quite have the ring to it that the original does. Don't forget that part where they are bringing the dynamite down to the bridge and they see 2 union soldiers carrying a man on a stretcher, stop, and turn around and beat them up and knock the dude off the stretcher just so they could carry the dynamite a little easier. I really don't understand why Sergio decided to put that scene in there because it just seemed completely unnecessary and totally uncharacteristic of "the man with no name" to do something like that. In the first movie he is a full fledged hero who risks life and limb more than once to save people while getting only food as payment.

To me Tuco running for 3:21 minutes all around the cemetery to find the grave, and Ecstasy of Gold playing in the background is iconic masterpiece scene for me. That scene is about finally getting what he strove for. What all of us strive to get (though that differs from person to person.) I firmly doubt, after getting his half, which at that time was a tremendous amount of money ($100,000) he would blow it all away and be poor. He likely gave up the life of a bandit and put away his gun and invested it in a ranch and bought cattle and flipped over his money. You want proof? Go watch the scene of the Magnificent Seven and the speech made my VIN (Steve McQueen) "Yeah. First day we got here, I started thinking: Maybe I could put my gun away, settle down, get a little land, raise some cattle. Things that these people know about me be to my credit - wouldn't work against me. I just didn't want you to think you were the only sucker in town."

How Tuco stands is symbolic. He stands and hangs unsteadily on a cross with the gold right in front of him. If he succumbed completely to greed, he would lean towards the gold and die. Can we really control our greed even when knowing there is a rope around our neck?

As iconic as the Man with No Name is, Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez (known as The Rat) is one of the greatest characters to grace the silver screen. He is a hilarious comic relief, a sympathetic underdog, a greedy opportunist and a resilient badass all rolled into one. You love him, hate him, root for him, laugh at him, learn from him and connect with him. He is extremely well-written, full of personality and depth and was brought to life to maximum perfection by the Oscar-worthy Eli Wallach. He is the reason The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is the cinematic masterpiece it is, other than Sergio Leone's direction and Ennio Morricone's music.

Tuco is absolutely the protagonist of this movie, Blondie is amazing, but whereas we see snippits of Blondie's character shine, we get a very big focus on Tuco, he's the focus of both the start and the end of the movie and he's the one subject to the main character growth in the movie, whereas Blondie was probably going to gun for Angel Eyes, knowing he was the bad guy here, Tuco was a wildcard, he had almost killed Blondie a bunch of times, while Blondie looks calm as ever Tuco legit looks like he wants to blow Blondie's brains out, but he doesn't and manages to trick angel eyes with the con that he's always done with Blondie. Such a great character from such a great actor. RIP

Blondie is definitely not as good as the title would try to have us think, but he's still better than Tuco and Angle Eyes in morality in my opinion. Blondie at least save people's lives and sometimes give them second chances compared to Angle Eyes who kills anyone ruthlessly for greed, and Tuco (though admittingly the film's best and most sympathetic character) who double crosses anyone when given the chance to.

Blondie wants Tuco to appreciate him for his partnership, honor (in so far as he recognizes that he has any) and for his skill and smarts. Tuco was outsmarted, outmaneuvered, and outmanned. The money is his (Tuco’s) because, in a way, it isn’t just about payback, it’s about the fact that he got paid. And, it serves for Blondie to leave Tuco, at least for now.

I’m 70 years old and watched this movie for the first time in my life. I have TWO WORDS to describe my feelings - EPIC MASTERPIECE. I would love to see this in a theater on a really BIG screen remastered of course. As it was I watched in on a new 85” tv we just bought. In fact this was the first movie we watched on it.

I love how all the characters have different toned themes throughout the movie. Blonde has a lighter more heroic theme symbolizing his Good morals. Angel Eyes has a Darker and more villainous theme symbolizing that he has no morals Tuco is somewhere in the middle with his loud and wild theme, he is a scumbag, but he has some morals. And that mix of both makes him my favorite character.

I’m 18 and I actually watched this movies after watching a show with a friend. After he left I had the screen still on and saw this and gave it a shot. I had never seen an old western movie and I was conflicted with interest. But by the end I was left on the edge of my seat and so emotional.

This scene, this bloody scene right here, is easily one of my most favourite scenes in cinema ever; Jesus Christ, it truly had my heart doing all sorts of things. I didn’t even know what I wanted to happen- until it happened. Eli Wallach, you absolute beauty. Thank you thank you thank you so much for this portrayal; you truly elevated this movie from being good, to downright legendary. God it’s amazing what good cinema can do to one’s soul!
